Casa Riley, San Miguel

The house was conveniently located within walking distance to the downtown area, and had a pretty patio and garden where we enjoyed eating breakfast when it wasn't too cold in the AM's. The living/dining room area was comfortable for reading, watching TV, or relaxing in the evenings. The maid was very pleasant. and would also cook, if requested to. However, you'd better speak Spanish, or communicating with her about what you want done will be a challenge. You will also need to be clear about what you want her to cook and how, as she didn't have many suggestions of her own.
Overall, however, there were a number of disappointments in Casa Riley. The house manager didn't bother showing up the day we arrived. The maid let us in and showed us around. The house layout was awkward, with one bedroom and bathroom downstairs, and the master bedroom and bath upstairs, separated by the outdoor patio. You have to go outdoors to go from the downstairs to upstairs rooms, or to get from the downstairs bedroom and bath to the kitchen/living space. This would be inconvenient for families with very young children, who need supervision.
Security-wise, we felt vulnerable as there are too many ways to get inside this property. The front wooden double doors were flimsy and a strong kick could easily smash through the lock. The door to the sun roof did not lock securely, and abutted someone else's roof. One day, hearing voices out there I looked out to see two men on the roof next door. They would have just needed to climb over a low fence to be on our roof. It was also very noisy all the time. One of the neighbors played music very loudly at all hours, day and night, and there was often music from the church plaza down the street.
In amost every room we found drawers and shelves harboring junk and discards, and the house showed signs of age and disrepair and a lack of proper maintainence. The kitchen tools, utensils and appliances were rusted, dull or primitive. Our "toaster" was a pan to brown the bread over the gas burner! The ironing board looked ancient and the iron kept spitting water onto my clothes! The sun deck could have been a lovely place to relax, except the plastic table and chairs up there were filthy, the hard plastic chaise longue did not have a cushion, and was also dirty. I could go on and on, but running out of space.
I would not stay here again, nor recommend it to others.
Owner's Response: We take constructive criticism very seriously. While most people love the house, we understand when there are issues.
We have discussed these items with our managing agent, and they will be remedied immediately.
