I'm a San Francisco resident since 1999 and appreciate the beauty and character of the historical homes of San Francisco.
Navin Agrawal purchased this house in 2006
Live like a true San Franciscan in an 1899 Victorian which is located in one of the most vibrant neighborhoods of San Francisco where you get the local feel, from the creative arts to the array of savory foods from the diverse ethnic restaurants.
I love the local feel of the neighborhood. Dolores Park, which is around the corner is a great place to soak in the sun and people watch. A short walk to the Valencia Street corridor and I can find almost any ethnic cuisine to fulfill my palate.
I was re reading the previous reviews and have to shake my head at those who complained about the noise. This is a city and with a city can come every city noise imaginable from street noise to neighbor noise. If you do not want to stay in a city, then go to the Suburbs. I was so excited to be staying is such a beautiful home especially since I am currently renovating a 1930s home. I was studying all the little details about this house and hope to find some similar items for my house. This may be a little detail that others may not notice but is something that is unique - your towels and sheets are amazing! Where did you get them? I couldn't figure out the brand names. The beds were sooo comfortable. I know it sounds weird to rave about such things but I have stayed in many vacation rentals around the world and never has an owner cared about those things so I just wanted to point them out.
I do have a couple of suggestions:
1. You should create a "information" binder that gives your guest information about the house. I have seen other vacation rental owners do this and it is very helpful and may help eliminate some of the complaints that people have. Such as where to find the toilet paper (I figured you would have some so I just looked in the most obvious place and easily found them) Also how to work the TV, stove, laundry, fireplace. Even though you may think these things are obvious, it doesn't hurt to provide the info.
2. You do need an internet "booster" to help get internet in the back of the house. The signal is very strong up until you get to the 2nd bedroom but then you cant get it in the kitchen or dining room. I don't know what the technical name is for them other than booster but I have them all over my house in Bermuda because our walls are made of concrete so the signal needs a boost. It is something you can easily plug into the wall in the dining room.
We absolutely loved being here. The neighborhood is perfect and we will definitely be back again.
The good, pictures accurately reflect the home, neighborhood is great and the downtown train is right on the corner.
The bad, Broken television. The owner claimed on a previous response it had been replaced April 9th but was still broken during our stay 2 weeks later. Several promises were made and broken for a replacement, disappointing service.
Some more good, beds are comfortable, appliances are high end and overall the décor while showing light wear is nicely finished.
Sadly more bad, Noise, I don’t believe we had unusual expectations of quiet and are not overly sensitive to noise having lived and stayed in many cities. While money and time has clearly been spent on the home, sadly noise abatement has been neglected.
I’m prepared to accept that we may have been unfortunate in experiencing a perfect storm of noise events during our stay, but a few were predictable and I believe should be disclosed to future guests.
The house is on a busy street and road noise is loud at night but acceptable given the location, I wouldn't mark the house down based on it alone.
The neighbor’s dog(s) -- the only visible one being a large malamute is a howler. Again not a problem on its own, but they do seem to have several more dogs in the home (referred to as a dog rescue by another reviewer) and when the other dogs join in, the cacophony is unpleasant.
Construction, the house 2 doors down is under substantial construction. The entire first floor and basement are being excavated. Construction has been going on for several months according to neighbors and will continue for six more. This is obviously out of the owners hands but given the scale he has to know and should make renters aware that crews are operating 7am to 7pm 7 days a week. Loud generators, earth movers, concrete trucks and pneumatic drills. In short, a real racket.
Downstairs unit, Regular conversation level from downstairs is clearly audible throughout the house and if you’re unfortunate enough to have a bickering couple below it feels like you’re sharing a room. Two nights of screaming and wailing and we knew way to much about the couple below. This could be easily solved with an additional door at the bottom of the stairs. One interior door is insufficient sound separation between the rental units.
Bottom line, the home looks great and has some lovely details but all the ornate door hinges in the world aren't going to help you sleep through the night.
My wife and young kids stayed at Dolores Victorian in April of 2015. The home was beautiful and clean. The back patio was charming. Very close to parks and dining. We loved everything about it. Hope to come back again.
Good news: beautiful, super cute, loved the back patio, comfy beds, good shower, walking distance to great spots, Uber was our means of transport. Bad news: dog rescue being operated next door- earplugs needed, incessant barking, one got out and we had to deal with it so it didn't get hit in the street-not really how we wanted to spend our last night. The owner did respond to messages, but he was out of the country and got them after the fact. TV needs replaced: no adjustment fixed this picture-NCAA tournament was on and we're a bunch of girls from IN who wanted to watch. TWO rolls of TP for 5 girls for 4 nights....TWO. I get having to buy some TP but really, TWO? No wifi on back patio fyi-not a huge deal. They ask that you start a load of laundry when you leave, but there's no detergent. A handful of Tide Pods would be nice. Two washcloths. Oh and the cleaning staff was still there at 4pm and we had to fold the load of sheets in the dryer. So a bunchof little things resulted in 3 stars. Most of it was not a big deal, but we felt like they were worth mentioning for an honest review.
This was a beautiful home and our experience was a great one. We felt at home and relaxed and slept so well on the comfortable beds. The neighborhood was easy to access and close to everything- we would most certainly stay here again!
OMG this house is gorgeous!!!! wow! Its straight out of HGTV – amazing! The attention to detail in the décor is outstanding – the claw foot tub, lighting fixtures, unique furniture and even the modern appliances that blend perfectly with the Victorian feel. Its really amazing! I kinda chuckled when I saw the hinge photos in the rental listing, but I get it now. The detail in this renovated Victorian is amazing. Most Victorian homes in SF are made of paint and dirt, but this home is immaculate. Its very cozy and the layout is perfect for small dinner parties or taking time out to have privacy. The backyard is completely private with a working fireplace. The flat is a few blocks from Castro street and a block from Dolores Park, easy buslines and J church train. Very quiet...did I mention gorgeous?!?
Check-in/check-out was super easy, key in the lockbox - have a great time! (no annoying property managers ;)
Navin - thank you for opening your doors to us, we LOVED staying there. I have never been in a Victorian that was in such immaculate condition. I know you put a ton of money into your home – again, gorgeous!
I can't wait to have more friends come visit so we can all come back!
