Aloha and welcome to Hawaii Paradise by the Sea on the incredible Hamakua coast in historic Hakalau. This is a two bedroom, two bath plantation style home. Your back lanai offers beautiful views of the ocean, incredible sunrises, passing ships and whale watching. You can enjoy all this while relaxing over a refreshing tropical drink at your outside dining table or grilling tonight's dinner. While at home have some friendly competition at the foosball table (table soccer). Take a 5 minute stroll to the cliff's edge or down to Hakalau Bay for a refreshing swim or body boarding.
The locals refer to this part of the island as God's country and it won't be long before you see why. We are minutes away from Umauma Falls, botanical gardens, the grand 442 foot Akaka Falls, Kolekole Beach Park (a nice place to picnic), 2 Zip lines and the small town of Honomu with it's quaint shops and the best shave ice around. Honolii, one of the best surf spots on the island is only 10 minutes away. The historic town of Hilo is 5 minutes further with a farmers market, Tsunami Museum, Rainbow Falls, Liliuokalani Japanese style garden, Banyan Drive, Coconut Island and downtown shopping and dining. Another 30 to 45 minutes South will bring you to Kilauea Caldera-the world's most active volcano, the hot ponds and tidal pools to snorkel in. A 30 minute drive North of the house brings you to breathtaking Waipio Valley, Parker Ranch and golf courses.
The spacious retreat comes with everything you need to enjoy making your special meals or smoothies in this beautiful kitchen with granite countertops. You will find everything you need to make your vacation complete even your own washer and dryer. This home is handicap accessible. Sorry no pets or indoor smoking.
This is a separate rental unit adjoined to our home where you will have complete privacy with your own private entrance and phone number. So come relax, enjoy, and experience Hawaii Paradise By The Sea.
Bob and I moved from New Jersey at the same time as our home was completed in 2008. After vacationing on the Big Island for many years and never wanting to leave our dream finally came true. We are in awe of the beauty that surrounds us with the ocean view, mountains and beautiful flowers, this is an amazing island and we look forward to sharing it with you.
Sandy and Bob purchased this house in 2008
This property offers a wonderful ocean view for watching the ships, whales or just day dreaming while sipping lemonade. It's walking distance to Hakalau Bay to watch the surf, boogie board, have a picnic or see an occasional monk seal.

Our stay was fabulous. The house is comfortable, very clean and inviting and in a great location for exploring the Hilo side of the island. Getting used to the song of the male tree frogs and road noise at night took a little getting used to. Morning coffee and evening cocktails on the lanai with the fabulous ocean views was delightful. We even saw a few whales! There are many "must do's" on the island and we did just that--helicopter tour, zipline, segway tour of botanical gardens, volcano national park and the many fabulous beaches and waterfalls in the area. It was a very full 8 days for us.
Thank you so much Sandy and Bob for your hospitality, conversation and recommendations for great local restaurants. It was a joy to meet you.
We four friends stayed a week at this guesthouse. The owners Sandy and Bob welcomed us and were so helpful and friendly during our visit. The property is clean, well maintained and with a spacious living area and lanaii with an ocean view. One bedroom is a master with an ensuite bathroom. The other has twin beds. There is another very nice bathroom close by. There is no stove, though a hot place and various electrical appliances, including microwave, are provided so cooking an evening meal is possible. The lainaii overlooks the ocean and is a great place to sit early in the morning watching the sky brighten and the day get underway, and also in the evening as the stars come out and the frogs begin their calls. We found a lot to do nearby and the 15 mile drive to Hilo was no problem. We would use this property again. A Hui Hou!
For vacationers who look for something more relaxing than the hotel resorts in Kona-Kaliua, this beautiful home in Hakalau on the east side of the Big Island has plenty of natural scenery to offer. Only 15 min drive from Hilo, the next larger town, the house sits off the road on a hill with view of the Ocean. The hosts are an extremely nice couple who take pride in treating their guests well. We were a family of four and enjoyed every second in this beautiful home. It cannot get much better.
Sandy and Bob are the most gracious hosts who provide excellent tips for making your visit to the Big Island memorable. This vacation rental is extremely clean and the view from the lanai is a stunning site to start your days! If you are sensitive to new sounds when you travel, I recommend packing a pair of earplugs to help reduce the highway traffic noise and the chorus of frogs. With this simple sleep-aid you will really enjoy your stay at Paradise by the Sea. It is a great location to explore Akaka Falls. We also used this location as our base to visit Waipio Valley - a beach that should not be missed on your visit to the Big Island! Sandy and Bob's hospitality can not be matched. The washer and dryer rack (and loads of hangers!) and the two bathrooms were great features to this vacation rental. Although, the kitchen doesn't have traditional oven with stove-top burners, we were able to prepare our dinners using the extremely convenient convection-rotisserie oven and for those who like to grill, there is a grill for use on the back lanai. Thank you for helping to make our trip to the Big Island to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday an absolutely wonderful experience.
Our family of four absolutely loved the beautiful stay we had here. With hosts who were hospitable but unobtrusive, the wrap around porch with a peaceful view of the ocean, the stocked essentials, and the overall restful feel, I would strongly encourage others to stay at Hawaii Paradise by the Sea. Also, be sure to follow "Sandy's Tips" that will guide you to amazing locations such as a black sand bay very near their house and amazing tidepools off the beaten path. In the words of our 21 year old, "We should have stayed here a lot longer!" Mahalo, Bob & Sandy!
My daughter & I came to the big island as part of our healing process. My son, her brother, died this past February at the age of 14-1/2 and we wanted to scatter some of his ashes in Hawaii.
Sandy was compassionate and Bob, although I had less contact with him, was kind on the phone. They were professional and the house was clean and well-kept.
I suppose the reason I didn't give 5 stars would be the location. The little road it's on is conveniently right off the highway, and surprisingly the traffic noise didn't bother us once we got used to it. The property is centrally situated on the Hamakua coast, thus the location is perfect for traveling up the coast & down to Hilo. But we didn't care for the road itself nor the beach that was at the end of it. As a runner, I had to cross the highway to find a good running route. The view from the lanai & dining area was beautiful, but I thought the house was actually right on the beach, i.e., easy enough to walk down to so as to have my morning coffee & watch the sunrise or an evening cup of tea there.
Overall, I was satisfied. I suggest you rent a car because you'll need one to get to & from Hilo for groceries. The driveway, although quite steep, is actually easier to maneuver that it looks. I loved seeing so many heart-shaped rocks - I took them as signs from my recently deceased son. Again, Sandy's compassion was very comforting.
Mahalo to Sandy & Bob. I hope we can stay with you again someday.
