Our apartment is on the Elbe Biosphere Reserve - right on the river Elbe in Rüterberg - View to the southwest across the Wendland with unique sunsets. You can see wild geese, ducks, mergansers, cormorants, gray and white herons, cranes, eagles, storks, beavers and foxes, etc. .. Nature is very rich and diverse. In the extensive pine and oak mixed forests are plentiful mushrooms, especially porcini, chanterelles and chestnuts. For nature lovers who appreciate peace and quiet, this is the ideal place. The vastness of the landscape with the river, the great flood meadows, willows, poplars and elms, and especially the great sky with nice cloud images fascinate us every day. And at night you can look at a brilliant starry sky, no light is disturbed by the cities - but of course only in clear weather.
The area is ideal for cycling, the house is located on the same bike path.
We have a private jetty in front of the door, the groynes are popular places for fishing.
Rüterberg is a small village on a hill overlooking the Elbe River Valley, our house is at the end of the village.
Rüterberg has become known locally as 'village republic Rüterberg', to which the residents have joined forces as the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist. The village was completely locked up because of its exposed position on the inner German border with a fence. The entrance gate was closed at night, so that residents were no longer admitted.
Another peculiarity was the Rueter Berger brickyard, which has produced very nice dark hard-fired brick and others sold to Hamburg. With these stones there was a lot of construction, as Chile's best-known building is the house. With these stones, the façade was also transformed at our house in the 20s.
Worthwhile goals in the area are Doemitz, Ludwigslust and Schwerin.
In Doemitz there is a mighty citadel, in which the poet Fritz Reuter has been sitting in prison. Doemitz has a picturesque old town (including the second Karstadt department store in Germany), a small port at the Müritz-Elde waterway and a very popular café with a great panoramic view of the same landscape.
The county town of Ludwig Lust is famous for its Baroque castle with a large park
And Schwerin, the state capital with a lot of surrounding lakes, a neo-classical city and the 'fairytale castle' in which the parliament resides, is definitely worth a visit.
The Wendland or Lüchow-Dannenberg on the opposite side of the river offers an amazing amount of cultural activities. In the spring there is the 'Cultural Outing', which introduced a large number of artists, artisans and various initiatives.
Hitzacker is a picturesque town on the Elbe River a few kilometers distance from here to the Lower Saxon Elbe. You can easily get there by bike and a small passenger ferry to drinking coffee or ice cream and use the other side of the river and the bridge Dömitzer for the return trip. Hitzacker is nationally known for music lovers because of the 'Summer Music' and 'Music Week Hitzacker' in February.
Good to very good restaurants there are on both sides of the Elbe.
