Overview

Opihihale Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6-7)

Are there still some adventurous, Huck Finn type sparks alive in you? Then turn up your Jurassic Big Island experience another notch by staying in this unique, hand-made, GENUINE treehouse built 20 ft. up into 5 living, native Hawaiian ohia trees.

Look down onto the reaching fronds of amazing hapu'us (giant tree ferns) from huge windows and lanais all around, providing 360-degree birds-eye views of this secure, private 4 acre paradise. Witness the thrills of nature's interactions while nestled in homey comforts, including full-kitchen and bath, TV/DVD, music and more to modernize your Swiss Family Robinson experience.

Fall asleep while star-viewing from your comfy bed perched high up in the spacious loft. Some nights, even the volcano's red glow is visible.

A real-deal treehouse... located between two active volcanic vents... in Hawaii... you might never want to leave! But Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the charming artist colony of Volcano Village are nearby if you do.

Huck Finn says: For the creative, environmentally sensitive types, not the fussy. This truly 'green' structure was intentionally built in the most non-invasive manner, using high grade building wood and reconditioned windows, doors, and most everything else (including the 'kitchen sink!') And after 6 years of testing by various forces of nature, it's structural integrity has been proven to be sound and solid. And the trees are happy, too.

Wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

This treehouse exceeded our expectations. You will love staying here and will be a highlight of your trip. The treehouse was beautiful with enormous windows, which made us feel that we were part of the forest. While the treehouse has the amenities you'd expect of world class lodging (incl. easy access) the treehouse is environmentally considerate and there are features everywhere that are thoughtful and convey a story. The owner loves to help you fully appreciate his creation. He also provided valuable information on the area and local amenities. The property is rural, so you will want to buy some supplies, but we found Volcano Village (5 min away) to be well equipped with small grocery stores and excellent restaurants. Also, note that it is cooler and wetter than most would expect in Hawaii. In spite of that, the treehouse is very dry and cozy.

Once in a lifetime experience

  • 4 of 5

What a memorable place to stay! We will never forget our treehouse experience. It was so beautiful sitting out in the forest at night looking up at the stars. (By the way, it was veeery chilly so bring sweatshirts or sweaters.) The house had everything we needed and more - everything was very well thought out. Skye was there to meet us, give us the house tour, answer all our questions, and give us activity recommendations. For a couple, it is a really wonderful place to stay. I didn't give it 5 stars because I think it is a little misleading to say it sleeps 6 people. When the twin mattress is pulled out from under the bed there is no room to get around it. The double mattress under the eaves of the house is impossible for an adult to sleep in; kids maybe. My adult daughter attempted to sleep in there and said it felt like she was in a coffin. The downstairs futon is fine. The only other little issue we had was the water from the cistern occasionally came out brown when we first turned on the tap, but that may have been due to recent lack of rainfall. Overall, we loved our unforgettable stay in the treehouse.

Exceeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5

Skye's treehouse is a work of art and the most feng shui cool place I've ever stayed. The location is as private as it gets, while still easily accessible to sights, and the home is unreal. Attention to detail, appreciation of natural beauty, and "quality" are a few of the attributes that come to mind. It reminded me of being on a boat...everything you could need, just scaled down and with every nook well-used. Extremely clean and--shockingly--no bugs?! As mosquito magnets, I was concerned that we'd have nights of bites & buzzing but not a one. The house was equipped with everything we needed--down to coffee filters and a loaner guide book. Skye was very welcoming and flexible and had excellent advice for touring (loved the crater hike). Would recommend this to anyone who likes something out of the ordinary. Probably not a good fit for kids under 6ish--our 10 & 12 year olds loved the place but there is not much room for rambunctiousness.

Owner's Response: Aloha Julie, I loved reading your review, thank you. I'm happy you brought up that there are not many if any bugs in the TreeHouse, and the accessibility to all the sights. I so enjoyed meeting and helping your families visit meet all your expectations, the Volcano is so cool to see and walk thru, plus the great restaurants close by. The cool sleeping nooks are definitely fun for the young ones. Also thanks for the comment on the cleanliness, we work hard to make it the best experience for you that we can. Mahalo Skye.

Honeymoon in a Treehouse

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing experience! We spent 3 days and two nights at Skye's Treehouse in Volcano. It was the perfect way to start our honeymoon!

Skye offered very helpful and practical advice on places to go and things to do including when to do them based on experience, weather, busy times, etc.. His advice was always spot on!!! He made our stay super easy with great food recommendations, hikes and sites to see. Thanks Skye!

The treehouse was more than we hoped for! It was located in an ultra private property that was dense with natural vegetation and wildlife. The trail into the house was gorgeous and easy to navigate. The treehouse was 20+ feet in the air and it was huge! The place had details and personal touches everywhere. Each item thoughtfully placed. We appreciated how comfortable and functional everything was. The place is nearly all windows with wonderful views from all around! It is clear the place was built for personal use with all of the attention to detail and the homey feeling the place exudes!! The lanai was extraordinary. Having coffee out in the middle of the trees with all the wildlife was incredible.

Thanks Skye for sharing your place with us. We would love to return. It was a tremendous value for the cost and exceeded all of our expectations!

Mahalo!

I'm so glad you had a chance to go to all the great places I recommended, there is so much to do in the area and the TreeHouse is fun to just hang around in and enjoy the fact that you are in a real TreeHouse with nature all around. I'm happy you appreciated the beautiful trail to it and all the nature that I also love so much, meeting you both was a treat. A whimsical but comfortable TreeHouse is a wonderful way to start your life together. Best of luck, Skye

Built to Last!

We had so much fun the first time, we came back for another visit. We were very excited about staying in Skye's beautiful treehouse on the night of tropical storm/hurricane Ana and amazed at how safe and secure we felt the entire night of the storm. Owner/builder Skye is clearly a builder with a lot of Skill. We just laid back and enjoyed the increadable lightning storm all evening. With the large windows all around, the show was spectacular! Rain or shine, Skye's treehouses are one of the most beautiful and exciting places we have ever stayed at! Both of Skye's treehouses are amazing - each with its own unique ambiance. It was another epic/galactic evening we will never forget!

Enchanting !

  • 5 of 5

I had the pleasure of staying in Skye's treehouse and found the experience to be completely satisfying. The treehouse is an amazing work of art. Skye's artistic expresion is seen in every beautiful detail. He is truly a master at creating an enchanting environment! The staircase leading up to the bedroom is cleverly crafted and the views from the loft bedroom are amazing! The round table downstairs with the fireplace is a very cozy and unique place to enjoy a meal. The kitchen is beautiful and is equip with everything needed to cook with. The large windows all around the treehouse allow for beautiful views of the mystical rainforest. The skywalk is a wonderful place to sit outsid to enjoy the sunrise or sunset while listening to the cool wind move through the trees and singing from the colorful birds of the rainforest. The night sky is absolutely amazing here with shooting stars and constellations floating overhead. Skye, thank you for sharing your masterpiece. It is an experience never to be forgotten!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words, I'm so glad you got to experience an epic stay. I love seeing shooting stars right from bed, the Skywalk is my favorite place to drink coffee and enjoy the morning or evening, and the fireplace on the table seems like another person sitting there with you, I've never seen that anywhere else. Thanks for taking a chance with staying in my TreeHouse, it's way more than you might expect.
