Want to get away? This quaint little all solar cottage is the perfect escape for two. It is nestled on the lush east side of Maui, close to Hana, with a 100 acres of land at your doorstep. The cottage is completely furnished with hardwood floors, granite counter tops and beautiful views of the mountain and ocean. This is a perfect retreat--quiet, romantic, peaceful and serene.
The hundred acres on which the cottage is located provides the opportunity for hiking excursions. Or for other day trips continue to follow the road to Hana where you'll find beautiful beaches, Seven Pools, snorkeling at Hana Bay and horseback riding.
Let the aloha spirit settle gently at your doorstep here at Mack's Shack and create the vacation of your dreams!
This was our second time staying at Mack's Shack and I can't tell you how much we love this place. We again had so many cool adventures around Hana that I'll never forget, and mornings and evenings are so relaxing around the house. For those who want an off-the-beaten-path experience of real Hawaii, this is a perfect place to stay in a perfect setting.
My wife and I loved staying here... private, comfortable and clean, stunning views. Close to things, but away from it all. We are planning to go back!
We are a local Maui family who lead a very busy life as business owners with two small kids (yes even in Maui life can be crazy and hectic!) We love to escape to Hana to really slow down and feel like we went back in time. This is the first time we stayed at Mack's shack and I can say with certainty it won't be the last! The first night we were there we told the boys the wifi and tv was broken (even though it was not) and with no cell service or tv to distract us, we connected as a family like we have not in a long time. Being off the grid was a very cool experience and it gave us a chance to teach our kids about renewable resources and how we should not waste energy. We loved walking the property, picking fresh guava fruit from the trees and just relaxing to the ocean view. There was no need that was unmet and the house was in beautiful condition. It was so much nicer than we thought it was going to be, I think it needs a new name as it most certainly is not a shack! We liked to call it our cabin, I felt like I was "glamping" which is pretty much the only kind of camping I participate in so it was perfect. A hot shower and a well stocked kitchen is the way to go! I would highly recommend this property for anyone who is looking for an authentic Maui experience. Who needs pools when you can jump into a natural pool at the bottom of a waterfall or take a short drive to some of the most epic beaches on the entire island!!
Mahalo for this authentic Hana, Hawaiian experience. OMG = PARADISE FOUND!!!
I never want to leave this place: Beautiful, powerful, spiritual. A piece of my soul
will always remain here at Mack's Shack! : )
BTW, several improvements have been made to their original solar system, so did not
experience any issues whatsoever. It's very comfortable, relaxing, and well decorated.
Mack's Shack in Hana is perfect for a couple wanting to get away in peaceful isolated seclusion, but it's right off the Hana Highway so it's easily accessible. It's surrounded by an abundance of nature and spectacular views. Being off the grid posed no problems with electricity, and there's enough rain water for washing and bathing, but bring plenty of drinking water (and food if you want to have more options and better prices than in Hana). The outdoor shower is awesome! The trail up the property and gate leading up to it need maintenance to make it more accessible, but we hiked it anyway in tall grasses. The fresh giant wild pig droppings made us turn around, but if there was a bit more of a trail we'd feel safer. That's the only complaint, everything about the cottage and main lot is perfect! Especially having no neighbors...
My wife and I stayed at Mack’s Shack on our honeymoon and overall we had a great time. The house offers an experience unlike most of the accommodations you’ll find on Maui. It’s extremely private, you have an amazing view (the photos don’t do it justice) and though you aren’t right in Hana, you’re really close (there isn’t anything there anyway).
We experienced the same pros and cons that other reviewers have noted. Namely, some of the appliances do not work, the solar power is not completely functional, the use of the generator was noisy, and the water filtration wasn’t working (so we had to buy our own water). And it would have been great to have access to the decommissioned hot tub (although it's not advertised). But the character of the property made our stay memorable. You are roughing it a bit and that’s an experience you can’t get from the condos and high-rises of the west side.
Most importantly, the property owner and manager were great. Great communication (booking the property and directions on getting there) and they greeted us and ensured we had all we needed once we arrived. They even made a special trip to get us charcoal for the BBQ. Because it was our honeymoon and we wanted everything to be perfect, we were even refunded a night’s stay. I don’t know anyone that would do something like that.
