Come to beautiful vacation home Casa Dulce, a simple, open-air rancho style home located on the scenic Osa peninsula of Costa Rica on a private two-acre preserve. Bring your family, friends or that special someone to slow down, take your life at a different pace, and see how much clearer everything is when you step back in to the peace, quiet and privacy of what feels like another world.
Our house is a traditional "open-air" rancho design. The design is loft-style with two sleeping areas upstairs and one downstairs. The beds are all double size with mosquito net canopies over each. Each bed has its own reading light and fan. There is a full kitchen complete with stove, refrigerator, hot water and all cooking utensils. There is a dry-room lock-up for valuables such as cameras and wallets, etc...
The living room adjoins the kitchen area with a couch and easy chair. The kitchen has a nice family table (seating for four)...all with a beautiful view of the ocean.
The front porch is the highlight of the house with its beautiful Cristobel bar and bar stools overlooking the pool and kitchen area. Imagine sitting by the pool, watching the breakers roll in while catching a glimpse of the scarlet macaws flying overhead and the monkeys scampering by to get coconuts from the trees on the beach. It's paradise found.
Come to relax and enjoy the solitude of the private two-acre preserve!

Rick Hardy, spent more than a decade visiting Mexico for his sand and surf fix, but after some prodding from a Costa Rican college friend he decided to visit Costa Rica. One visit and it was no more Mexico for him! He had found paradise and promptly bought beautiful Casa Dulce in 1991.
Since that time, Rick and his family have enjoyed escaping the hustle and bustle of the States by retreating to Casa Dulce twice a year.
"When we come down here life just seems to slow down and we realize how little we need to get by and still be happy. In fact, we're happier here than we are in the States with all of the trappings of the modern world.
One of the things we love the most about coming down here is 'family time'. When we are in the States, everyone is so busy, we hardly ever see each other, much less take the time to sit down together to work on a puzzle, play a board game, or just talk with one another. That's probably my favorite reason for coming to Casa Dulce."
-- Rick Hardy
I have been going to the Osa since the late '80's and I can honestly say that Casa Dulce is one of the finest places in Matapalo. If you like to surf, riding waves at Pan Dulce will (if you're lucky enough to make it all the way to the beach on what I call "A Walk-Back" ride) deposit you right at the foot of the stairs up to the house. Imagine dropping in at the take-off rock, making it through those tricky sections, wrap around the corner and head on home. I like to go up to the house and get a drink and maybe a cookie... walk back out, and do it all over again. If you like to fish... you can't beat the front yard. Most fish are caught within a few yards of the beach in the first "gut". If you like catching some great fish, bring your rod (in a PVC tube) and reel and some "White on white, Red Fish Rig" or "Speck Rig" lures. You cannot go wrong with these "catch-all" lures. You can find them at Academy Sports for under $2.
A trip to the Osa cannot be beat... there are so many things to do from: tree jumping, waterfall repelling, jungle hiking, surfing, fishing... you name it, the Osa has it.
Casa Dulce is a quaint traditional "open-air" rancho. You feel like you're outside when you inside... washing the dishes, you're looking at the waterfall. Cooking, you're looking at the beach opening. In the living room, you're looking at the sunrise.
The solar-powered, waterfall fed dipping tub makes Casa Dulce hard to beat when you're coming up from the beach. A wonderful artisan-well provides fresh, cool, clay-filtered water to the dipping tub via a beautiful waterfall. Imagine hanging in your hammock, pool-side, with the wonderful sound of rushing water lulling you to sleep on your front porch.
You can't appreciate Casa Dulce without mentioning the wonderfully landscaped yard... it is truly a paradise. If you like beautiful plant-life and exciting wild-life right in your front yard, you're going to love your time in Matapalo.
I cannot say enough without saying "check it out"'... you won't be disappointed.

unique, magical, special are just a few adjectives that describe this charming home. casa dulce is situated in one of the most amazing places on our planet. spending time in this home should be a requirement as it is guaranteed to reduce any stress and add years to your life. Take some time to visit with Ramon, the caretaker i assure you he will capture your heart. He is a wealth of knowledge about the area and can assist you in truly discovering and experiencing the area. Rick, the owner is a pleasure to deal with.
After extensive travels through-out Costa Rica over the years, we finally found a rental that we know we will come back to year in and year out and can think of as our home away from home- I write this review apprehensively and somewhat sensored, as I hope there will be availability for us every year!!!! The property is well located, very clean and full of everything you need- including a safe room to lock all your belongings- we slept for about 12 hours every night, lulled by the jungle sounds (and the ocean!) and enjoyed seeing all the wildlife come through the yard during the day to eat in the Manzana tree- Ramon the caretaker was extremely friendly and helpful and his wife Lizeth was too- she even does massages and clay treatments!!!! The owner was super helpful and friendly as well- making the whole international reservation and language barrier thing a breeze.....bring your fishing rods and lures!!!!!
I rented this house from the owners a couple years ago, for a month or more.
I had been to Matapalo before and had rented two other houses nearby, and also slept at some nearby little rooms for rent and such. What travelers should know is that if you love beach life and jungle, the Osa Peninsula is hard to beat.
It is pristine and you are surrounded by water, jungle and all types of wildlife. This house is in a premium location, being close yet off the main road that travels the peninsula. The front of the home has a view of tropical gardens that leads directly to the beach. The water is safe with some nice surf waves. The house has a great kitchen too, with views to the tropical landscape and small pool. I generally slept on the main floor, but the upstairs bedroom was sweet too. The bathroom has a nice big shower and is inside the house, many houses in this area have the bathrooms down a small path outside - so not so safe in the middle of the night. The owners of this home are friendly, reasonable people. I had a couple unique experiences on the peninsula, which have nothing to do with the property, and they were very accommodating. If you are a couple who enjoys surfing, wildlife viewing, hanging out at Martina's bar, fishing, bird watching, this is the perfect place.
We can't say enought about this rental! 4 adults stayed for 6 nights...but our teenage boys would have loved it there too! Next time we will be sure to bring them! Surfing (at ages from 40 to 50) was a blast!!! The beach, fhishing and walks to nearby waterfalls were about all we did. We cooked most or our food but Esperanza's bar (a.k.a. Martinas) provided fantastic food and drinks! You just can't beat seeing monkeys swing in the trees and dozens Macaws....all from the house/pool!! The only thing we did NOT like was leaving!!!
