Just at the right angle to enjoy beach sunsets and the closest distance for canoeing or swimming to Choro Island. The main downtown is a30 minute walk along the beach or a 5 minute drive in your rental car.

About Franklin Herbas

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Palo Alto, CA. My daughter Ayla, 3 1/2 months old in this picture, was born in January 2009 and we have been comming to Samara since she was 3 months old. I work for a software company in silicon valley and every year we find the time to visit Samara. When in Samara there is nothing better than playing with my daughter in the beach and watching the sunset every evening.

Franklin Herbas purchased this house in 2007

Why Franklin Herbas chose Samara

I lived in Samara for one year in 2003 and had a wonderful experience, personally got to know the town and its inhabitants while teaching math at the local grade school. In 2007 I returned to Samara and decided to buy a property in what we consider one of the most beautiful places on earth.

What makes this house unique

Casa dos Loros is located on the quite, less populated side of the beach right next to a local fishing village. Staying here you experience tranquility, privacy, a taste of local culture, with all the amenities of town 5 minutes away by car or 25 minutes walking along the beach. The beach is super accessible, just a one minute walk from the house.

All renters complement the backyard wild life. As one renter wrote in the guest book “A National Geographic in your backyard”. It is true from monkeys in the trees to iguanas, red squirrels, various types of birds, butterflies to Halloween crabs in the rainy season. If you enjoy fishing you will most likely experience sittings of turtles, dolphins and whales which adds up to catching a Mahi Mahi or Red Snaper.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thank you so much for opening up your house. We had a great vacation, very relaxing.

Your home was perfect! I can't think of a single thing I would have had different.

Thanks for sharing. By the way I have 3 other people who have asked for your web site to look into your house for their trip. I hope they call!!

Good location, house needs TLC

  • 3 of 5

Very mixed about recommending this house. We stayed 8 nights. The good part: located at the quiet end of long Samara beach, close to the island for snorkeling and kayaking, great sunsets. Also easy access to Carillo beach, a gorgeous uncrowded huge crescent with Palm trees for shade and perfect for swimming. The house is next door to Hideaway Hotel, a charming place, and that's your only neighbor. Before you stay talk to Melissa the local manager at Samara Rentals for an accurate picture. The place is not well maintained and guest issues are not addressed. For example, shoddy cookware, coffeemaker doesn't work well, no fans in living area and no screens on front and back doors for cross breeze. AC in bedrooms only. Shower heads clogged, cobwebs and crud in many places, bulbs out, icky furniture (we put a sheet over the couch), no internet (a former guest lost the hotspot device?). Bikes were listed as available, not true (I heard owner took that off listing tho). We read comments about all this in the guest book at the house, and so we aren't the first to find fault, which is why I say the issues aren't addressed. So if you are able to put up with some unpleasantries, it's not a bad choice for location and price, if you want to be out of the Samara fest, not eat out every night, and have more space than a hotel allows. We rented bikes and enjoyed riding into town and over to Carillo.

Great location for a getaway.

  • 4 of 5

The house is , as has already been noted, about 90 seconds from the best sunset beach view in the area. In Samara the sunset goes down behind the hills and the same on Carillo beach but right in front of the house it's great. The rooms in the house are bigger than you may expect from the pictures. There is very very quiet A/C in the bedrooms. We only used it once or twice but they were very quiet. The back deck/yard was a favourite place for breakfast and hanging out in the hammock to watch monkeys go by in the trees and Iguanas cruising around. There is a padlocked gate at the front of the driveway to keep your rental car safe and sound. The walk along the beach to the town of Samara will take you from 30- 40 minutes. If you really wanted to spend money on a kayak /snorkel tour to the island you could or when the tide is low walk out on the rocks and snorkel across to the island. The water doesn't get clear until you go out between the island and the mainland, closer in to the beach the water is murky. Bonus at the house was the backpack/deck chairs, we used them everyday we went to the beach. David of Samara rentals, the property managers, is great, lots of local knowledge friendly and easy going. I'd also recommend Wing Nuts canopy tour. You'll see their office at the pink fence half way from town to the house.

Be specific when you rent this house regarding questions to what is actually available at the time. For ourselves we don't like to be "in touch" when we are away but other folk may like to be connected. There is a T.V. and a DVD/CD player. There is no outside source for the T.V. but there are quite a few DVD movies and T.V. series at the house. There are only two cd's of music at the house and no outside source. We like music and always enjoy the local sounds. We would have just used the WiFi however there was no WiFi either. There is a bike as listed but it's not very functional. So if any of those things are important or a necessity for you ask as to what is available otherwise enjoy a nice quiet getaway literally seconds from the beach

Relax and enjoy for real

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing place to recharge, I love the location, it is a walk to the little town, the beach is 3 lots away, the back yard is very long and full of life with Iguanas and Monkeys, I recommend this house for family or groups, good surfing at the other end too.

THE BEST SPOT IN COSTA RICA!

  • 5 of 5

I went with two other couples for the first time to Costa Rica in May, beginning of the rainy season... which out of 8 days, only one rained! We all heard of this beautiful rain forest country, and can only imagine what was waiting for us... Well, not only is the country beautiful, amazing beaches, water temperature was perfect, the people were so welcoming, delicious fish... but this house was perfect! Cozy, walking distance from the beach, a yard in the back that had from monkeys, to horses (wild free happy ones), to iguanas... Close to the little town of Samara. We were able to cook fresh fish, or relax in the hammock at night... I would never prefer to choose this house over any hotel in the area! Can't wait to come back, and I will!!!!

A wonderful family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Casa dos Loros. We arrived in the evening, and right away we walked down to the beach and swam in the warm water and watched the sun set. A few hours later, we walked back out to the beach and saw the most incredible view of stars I have ever seen. There were so many thousands and millions of stars visible. It was amazing!

The house is nice, well-kept, and clean. The air conditioning in the bedrooms and the huge fan in the living area are great. The back patio was wonderful for relaxing breakfasts. The sound of the ocean was soothing. The kitchen was great too--the owner definitely addressed the concerns in earlier reviews because the kitchen was well-supplied and the house in general was comfortable and pleasant.

We loved the restaurants in the area--the local food is delicious. We went horseback-riding on the beach several times during our stay, and we went boogie-boarding for hours and hours every day. We even went out on a fishing boat and saw a family of dolphins. My kids loved it! All in all, it was a great vacation and we will definitely go back to this property.

Measure Your Expectations and You'll Be Happy Here

  • 3 of 5

POSITIVES:

The location of the house is fantastic. You're far enough from town that it's really quiet around the house - and, more importantly, down at the beach (a short 2-minute walk) where there were maybe 10 people in sight the whole time we were in the ocean.

Then there are the howler monkeys, which we saw 2 of the 4 days we were there, hanging out in the tree right behind the house. Honestly, people pay good money for tours to go and see a troupe like the one we enjoyed watching while drinking our coffee on the back porch. That was a pretty major bonus.

There is A/C in the bedrooms and it is a welcome relief.

Boogie boards and snorkeling gear in the back were great to have access to and we used them!

Finally, it's really reasonably priced so, as you read the criticisms below, remember that you do get what you pay for.

NEGATIVES

The biggest frustration was the lack of screens on the doors and windows. In a place as hot as Samara, it would have been nice to open the house up in the late afternoon and let in fresh air. But the absence of screens on the doors and most of the windows forced us to rely on the A/C in the bedrooms if we wanted to cool off. That was kind of a bummer.

The kitchen supplies were pretty spartan - the only thing in the kitchen was salt. Not even hand soap. Kitchen-ware, as has been noted in other reviews, is lacking. The kitchen stove itself sort of worked sometimes and sort of didn't others - we honestly couldn't figure out its quirks. A barbecue outside would have been greatly appreciated - apparently one had been there and was stolen, so a simple brick built-in would be a good solution there. Bottom-line, the outfitting of the house is so-so and some simple additions would go a long way.

The toilets were pretty sketchy and we only realized towards the end of our stay that they don't seem to handle paper of any kind, but management overlooked communicating that part.

Finally, though it wasn't an issue for us, Wi-Fi was problematic. If your idea of a vacation in Costa Rica includes being on the grid - this could prove to be a problem for you.

SUMMARY

The howler monkeys and ease of access to the beach, when combined with the cost, pulled this place out in a net positive for us. But if you're expecting a beautiful place to stay, you might find yourself disappointed.
