The Mettawee house was originally purchased by the owners as a vacation home. The owners loved the Danby location, and the local residents were incredibly friendly. The indoor pool was a great feature, that isn't found in many homes - particularly in Vermont! The owners like the property so much that they decided to share it with others so that they could experience the gorgeous setting, incredible views, and unique Vermont experience.
Welcome to Vermont! In the Green Mountains State, you'll find famous fall foliage, renowned maple syrup and the most snow on the east coast. But there is so much more too: enjoy local food at restaurants and farmers’ markets, savor the revered beer culture, meet world-class artisans, explore endless recreational opportunities, rejuvenate at the spa, learn at noteworthy historic sites and above all, please stay awhile… Vermont’s attributes will continue to reveal themselves to you in honest and inspiring ways.
Vermonters are known for their independent-thinking, friendliness, sportiness, and resourcefulness. The state’s residents love the land and are committed to preserving, as well as sharing it. Vermont’s agricultural traditions have created open working landscapes amid a backdrop of mountains, many of which make up the nation’s first through-hiking trail, the Long Trail.
While it’s easy to spend days simply taking in the scenery, it’s even more rewarding to become a part of it. It’s easy to explore backs roads and well-maintained trails by bicycle. Go for a run or walk along busy downtown paths or quiet villages with covered bridges. Drop into a halfpipe on your skis or snowboard and share the trail with local Olympians. Cast a line in a lake or stream, or relax beachside at a pristine state park. Whatever the day brings, the night is sure to deliver a solid night’s rest - whether you choose to camp under the stars, cozy up under a quilt at an inn, or appreciate the thread-count at a luxurious resort.
In Vermont, one thing is beautifully certain: The seasons will change. And with that change, so does the landscape, the recreation, and the way of life. With every season comes new opportunities to explore the world around you. Welcome to a state that is truly never out of season.
Swimming in the indoor pool in the middle of a snow storm
Unparalleled views of the mountains
Night-time sky - more stars than you have seen before
No other people, houses or cars around - it's really quiet!
Late summer 2014 marked our sixth visit to Mettawee. Our first trip (Spring 2011) was perfect, and yet somehow this vacation home keeps getting better. The season we haven’t experienced is winter, though it’s fun imagining returning from the slopes to a relaxing dip in the heated pool and to the cozy comfort of the family room’s wood-burning stove. We have still to explore all the extraordinary spots that are close enough for day trips. (If the weather is right, toss bathing suits into the car: you might happen upon an inviting swimming hole. Or just head directly to Grout Pond for hiking and swimming.) Winding roads through venerable forests suddenly open onto amazing vistas, then creep back into the woods and twist along streams. Pierce’s country grocery store in Shrewsbury has become our go-to for local fare, as well as a farm that is just down the road from Mettawee. With each visit, we enjoy discovering the changes to this vacation home. Whether it is a smart-looking sink in the half bath, a new sofa in the family room, a large wall-mounted flat screen (w/disc player) in the master suite, or new pool toys, Charles, the owner, is ever-mindful of keeping Mettawee contemporary and comfortable. We look forward to our next visit.
Gloriously spacious and beautiful property!
Heated pool is AWESOME!
Gas stove in kitchen is AWESOME! (except for clicking on some settings)
Wood stove for heat is AWESOME!
Many amenities for entertainment (board games and DVD movies) were AWESOME!
Master bedroom shower is AWESOME! (apparently way more awesome than the upstairs shower)
I stayed Mettawee with a group of 12 adults and one dog for a long weekend in Vermont. It was a little cozy (two couples had to share one room, and one couple slept on a sleeper sofa), but we knew that going into it. He has a second property with more rooms, but we chose this one because we wanted to use the pool during our stay.
We were hoping for a snowy winter escape, but managed to pick the one weekend right after a warm spell so there was just barely a dusting. We were really glad we chose a house with an indoor heated pool, since that made up for the lack of sledding! We visited some local breweries, hiked in the Green Mountain National Forest, and relaxed in the house together. We had a WONDERFUL weekend!
The house is clean and spacious. The beds were very comfortable, and the kitchen is well-stocked. We had everything we needed (except ingredients, of course) to cook some delicious meals together. The wood burning stove was wonderful after a cold hike on the mountain, and it was fun to splash around the pool in the evenings. I would love to come back in the summer sometime.
The owner is very explicit in the rental agreement, which is really wonderful. You know exactly what is expected when you check out, which made cleaning and packing on the final morning a breeze. He always responded within 24 hours if I had a question and was very pleasant to work with.
If you're looking for a cozy (but large!) house in a gorgeous setting, I highly recommend this house! We will definitely be returning in the future!
What a great stay!! A large group of us gathered for a ski weekend at Stratton. The house had more than enough space for all of us as well as plenty of activities to keep us entertained. The skiing was great but the view from the well equipped kitchen window was just as good. Good friends, good skiing, and a great place to enjoy it all.
Third time—yep, a charm. For the first time, we hit not-perfect weather, and you know what? It didn’t matter. The weather there changes often: a rainy morning will burst into sun, ending with an incredible sunset. But if it does rain cats and dogs all day so that getting lost in the incredibly interesting side roads and trails is not a preferred option, “Mettawee” offers perfect calm amid the storm: swim in the pool; try that new recipe in the fully equipped kitchen (there are spices and herbs in the pantry, but visit the gift shop at the Lincoln home Hildene, which has spice/herb blends to shorten your prep time); play some table tennis; relax in the family room with a DVD, CD, book, or game (your own or from the Mettawee collection); get back in the pool. All the while, the floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining room area--this large space also has two couches--offer views of wild creatures going about their business and of Dorset Mountain, which flirts shamelessly through any rolling fog. EVERYTHING CLEAN. And the half bath with direct access to the pool is just one example of the perfect layout of the house. MANAGER: CHARLES, THE BEST. And the convivial White Dog restaurant is right down the road, where owners Tom (great bartender) and Lisa (fantastic chef) will see that you are well fed and happy.
A perfect weekend at Mettawee for a girls weekend getaway. A large, spacious house, yet cozy and comfortable with something for everyone. We relaxed by the fire, swam in the pool, watched the snow come down as we looked out at the beautiful mountain. The birds have their own little haven here between the trees, the feeders and the little houses above the garage. Up on a hill and secluded by trees, yet open and airy with wide open fields and mountains to gaze upon through all the windows that make the house light and airy, yet very cozy, private and comfortable. We had a wonderful time just hanging out here without much desire to go anyplace else. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. It gives you whatever you are looking for in a vacation; peace and quiet by the fire or party fun and music by the pool. Very clean, very comfy, very cool. Perfect. Thank you so much. JH
