This gorgeous South Seas Plantation Home is in the heart of the famous Kona coffee-growing region on the Big Island of Hawaii, and is truly a one-of-a-kind vacation rental opportunity. This is a very quiet, rural setting and the home has an incredible, unobstructed view of coffee orchards, the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano, and the blue Pacific Ocean.
The Plantation Home lets you experience peace and quiet as the sun sets and you sip a mai tai on the lanai, overlooking the beautiful Pacific.
Set on the historic site of Maka Hiki, the ancient Hawaiian celebration of peace and reconciliation, this home is spectacular in every way. The home was built in 2005 and was designed to replicate the ultimate in a South Seas Planter's home. Decorated by an award-winning Hollywood set designer, the home evokes life in a Polynesian paradise.
Huge sliding glass doors recede into the walls, creating a complete indoor/outdoor living area. A large gourmet kitchen, with an incredible view, is a cook's dream. A top-of-the-line home theater and surround-sound system provides the perfect touch for evening entertaining.
Stroll down to the 40'x16' pool, which is solar heated for year-round swimming pleasure.
This home is perfect for up to four who want privacy, peace and quiet. It is also ideal for the those who wants to retreat from the world, write a novel, paint pictures, photograph nature, or just commune with life. There is a queen-size Tempurpedic bed in the master bedroom, and a comfortable, high-quality queen-size bed in the guest bedroom.
After searching the Kona area for more than a year, we bought this 5.2-acre parcel as undeveloped land in 2000. The property is located about a half-mile from the shoreline at an elevation of 1,000 feet (no need for air conditioning at this level), and has incredible ocean and mountain views. Access is very easy on a private, paved road. The property is 11 miles from Kailua-Kona, the largest town on the Kona side of the Big Island. The Plantation Home was built in 2005.
Jim purchased this chateau / country house in 2005
The property is peaceful and quiet, an escape from the busy world. The Kealakekua Bay shoreline is about 15 minutes away, where swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling are exceptional in this marine-life preserve. The nearest supermarket is only two miles away, and there are several excellent restaurants nearby. South Point, the southern-most point in the U.S. (yes, it's further south than Key West!) is about an hour's drive, and is near the quaint, picturesque little village of Naalehu. Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, home of the famous Kilauea volcano which has been erupting since 1983, is about 90 miles away.
There are not enough good things we can say about this house. My wife and I stayed here while in Kona to watch a great friend participate in the Ironman. Another couple was supposed to travel with us but were unable due to a family matter. This house is amazing. Everything you need is there. The view is incredible. The house is perfect for one or two couples. It is close enough to Kona and restaurants but also far enough away to be relaxing and quiet. The house is even better than the pictures. The patio is perfect for relaxing and watching the sun set or reading a book in the morning with a cup of coffee. The pool is very nice and refreshing. Everything is perfect. We hope to be back one day. The ocean is a short drive away. The owner was great to work with and very friendly. This place is like being at home (but in Hawaii).
We stayed for five days in August - perfect location, amazing views, and wonderfully relaxing set up. The home is well laid out - a large common room / open kitchen surrounded by windows, spacious master bedroom, lanai to live on, perfect pool and amazing out door shower. It was a wonderful place to detach from the world and thoroughly relax. The owner is very helpful and responsive. It was a perfect set up for our family of three and a place to which we can't wait to return.
My husband and I stayed here with my sister and brother-in-law. We wanted a peaceful location with an awesome view and wow did we get that and so much more! I can't begin to tell everything we liked and enjoyed because it was, well, everything! There is a nice pool, a lanai with beautiful views of the bay, two spacious bedrooms (on each end of the house so you get privacy) and the master bedroom has the MOST beautiful outdoor shower (really that whole bathroom is pretty fantastic). The other bedroom is just as great and also has a nice bathroom even with no outdoor shower! There is even a nice powder room/laundry room for your convenience. The house was very clean. It is close to restaurants and other amenities. I would say everything about this house looks better than the photos except the outdoor cushions near the pool do need replacing. The kitchen is gorgeous and is fully stocked. The owner even provided some of his coffee for us and we really, really enjoyed it! The owner provides helpful information about the area and gives detailed instructions about the house. We were more than pleased to have the Plantation House as our "home away from home". It was extremely difficult to leave this house and return to reality! I would love to return for another stay!
My wife and I travel to the Hawaiian Islands often and we typically stay in VRBO rentals, so I write this review as a "heavy user" of VRBO. If you are considering other options....STOP.....do yourself a favor and just book at the Plantation Home. We arranged our trip to THIS island (we considered other islands), just to accommodate a stay at this house and we were glad we did. This rental is in a league of its own, its the wagyu steak at a famous steak house that only serves steak. For those of you who enjoy a nice salmon, its the Copper River Salmon of salmon - you get the picture. We would never return to The Big Island without staying at the Plantation House. The view was everything you could expect and more, the pool was private and refreshing, the rooms were spacious. We felt the location was perfect for those looking something other than a hotel experience and the pictures are real. We have told everyone we know that if they travel to Hawaii this rental should be top of their list when considering the Big Island. Bottom line, book now, you will be glad you did.
My husband and I stayed here for five days in October which we had planned our stay around the full moon, which didn't disappoint us. The full moon illuminated the yard of this tropical paradise in the evening with its stately palm trees swaying in the breeze and creating dancing shadows on the lawn. Can you tell we loved this place! I'm just going to ramble off a few of my favorite things about the plantation house: pool in the morning, afternoon, and evening was so privately perfectly refreshing; the outdoor shower with the birds cooing over head and the snails and geckos coming to visit was renewing; the papayas, gardenias, boginvella, poinsettas, and trumpet flowers on the property were all a treat to the senses; the jacuzzi tub with the large window right over it with the scent of flowers coming through was ridiculously relaxing; the sliding doors that receded completely into the wall allowing full viewing pleasure; the outdoor living area; master bathroom; internet access; and proximity to Kealakua Bay and City of Refuge. If you rent a jeep or four-wheel drive, do not miss Makalawena Beach - crazy drive to get there but so worth it! There were a few minor issues that I think the owner should address: New cushion covers on "all" outdoor furniture as they are very worn. The lanai refrigerator did not work nor did the grill or sink that was built into the outdoor bar area. There was an additional working propane grill placed on the lanai. We also did not have lights on in the pool for four of the five days we were there. We e-mailed the owner on the first night, and on our last night there, the lights came on. Even with my last few comments, I would stay at this place again in a heartbeat. As I said in my title comment, it is a True Hawaiian Paradise.
As the other reviewers have stated -- the pictures do not do this beautiful home justice. We absolutely loved it. The outdoor shower was a special treat. The views are incredible. The furnishings are very nice. The layout of this home is a dream. A dream I wish I was reliving now. For anyone wanting an alternative to a resort (and fully understanding this disconnected approach), this is the place to stay. It is also close to "civilization" so you can forget something and have little troubles finding anything you need. I truly cannot express how nice this home is and how much we enjoyed it.
