Tulum is located one and a half hours south of Cancun. The town is about five to ten minutes from the beach. On the north end of town is the famous Tulum Maya ruins with its spectacular setting over the ocean. Going south on the beach road are many beautiful beaches, spas, and restaurants leading to the Sian Kaan bioreserve. The reserve has bird watching, kayaking, and fishing in the huge lagoon as well as numerous beautiful beaches for exploring. Various cenotes, fresh water pools, are spotted around the area. They are fun for swimming, snorkeling, and exploration. North of Tulum you can explore caves at Hidden Worlds or enjoy Xel-Ha or Xcaret, large theme and water parks. A reef runs along the beach offering great snorkeling just a short boat ride off the beach. Heading west away from town are more Maya ruins at Coba as well as the charming Gran Cenote. Tulum offers many restaurants and shops as well as a thriving modern Mayan culture.
