This graceful, easy-to-live in home is perched above the sparkling waters of Gloucester's inner harbor. Watch the gulls soar and fishing boats return home to this lively nautical port from the comfort of your enclosed sun porch, deck, or even as you prepare a scrumptious meal in the large gourmet kitchen which opens onto a plush family room with wood burning stove. The warm decor and beautiful furnishings create an atmosphere sure to please even the most discerning guests. On the main floor, in addition to the kitchen which opens onto the family room and sun room, there is a half bath, and a formal dining room which is adjacent to the living room complete with grand piano. Upstairs are three bedrooms, two full baths and laundry. The master bedroom overlooks the harbor. Ceiling fans in each bedroom plus family room. The convenient in-town location of this home makes it an ideal oasis for those who enjoy restful refinement while also delighting in being part of the Gloucester experience. Includes wireless internet and garage.
I grew up west of Cleveland and have lived on Cape Ann since 1997 when I purchased this home. My first career was as a senior executive in the retail industry for 24 years. I now provide psychology, coaching & group facilitation services for individuals and organizations.
I find Cape Ann inspiring. I love the sea, huge rocks, and rugged, genuine people. Once I knew I wanted to move here, I had a dream in which I saw the exact same view we have overlooking the inner harbor, so the moment I walked into this home, I knew I was in the right place.
I especially love the entire back of the house - the kitchen, family room, sun room, outdoor porch and master bedroom. Because they all overlook the inner harbor, there's a peaceful sense of being steeped in the vibrant blend of beauty and everyday life.
My daughter ran the Boston Marathon this year, and we needed space for six adults for a week. This home in Gloucester fit our needs perfectly.
My wife and I arrived first and found the house easily. Maneuvering our seven passenger van into the garage was accomplished easily enough. Then she and I began our visit immediately with a nap in the comfortable chaise lounges in the sun room. A FABULOUS way to recover from a day of travel.
Our son and daughter arrived soon after with their partners. There was plenty of room for us all. We spent most of our time in the family room just off the spacious kitchen. We enjoyed fires in the wood stove a couple of nights and there were intense games of Chinese Checkers played throughout the week! Occasionally the sounds of someone playing the piano would come from the living room. We made many breakfasts in the well equipped kitchen and one evening we made grilled chicken on the JennAire grill.
We made two day trips to Boston. Driving to Boston was an easy trip. Another day trip was to York Harbor, Maine with many sights to see along the way.
The rest of the week we enjoyed the area of Cape Ann. Hiking and bouldering in Dogtown was a highlight. We also enjoyed the walk out from the Gloucester lighthouse.
Treasures to bring home were purchased in the downtown shops, (an easy walk from this home). In Gloucester we enjoyed visiting the brewery, and we had excellent food at all the restaurants we visited on Cape Ann. On our last night in Gloucester we went to the Seaport Grille, just down the hill from the house. We wish we had found this restaurant sooner during our stay, because we wanted to eat there again!
We had a relaxing home to return to each day after our adventures. I can't think of anything I would change to make our experience with this owner and house better.
I will definitely seek out this home again if my travels bring me back to Gloucester. Thank you, Kathy Eckles, for a great experience.
I booked a long weekend at this house to “try it out” for an extended summer stay. So often places look incredible online only to be disappointing when seen in-person. This home was so much more than I ever imagined. But before I share more about the home, I have to say what made this weekend get-away even more special was the owner. Kathy was extremely caring, responsive and a delight to interact with. From the first email, she made us feel like her personal guests versus renters. And we continued to share our vacation experiences with her during our stay. It was a lot of fun.
As for the property, I was blown away. I’m a complete neat freak and the property was in perfect order. We immediately felt at home and of course were thrilled with the panoramic views of the harbor and working waterfront. These are not “peek-a-boo” views from a window or two. These views can be easily enjoyed from the kitchen, family room, porch / deck and HUGE master bedroom. I especially LOVED sitting up in bed and watching the sunrise over the harbor.
From the minute we walked in, we felt at home. It is a VERY spacious home but at the same time is extremely cozy. It is NOT a rental home with rental-type furnishings. We were there during one of the many blizzards of 2015, so we made full use of the woodstove (that Kathy had already stacked for a fire when we arrived). We also enjoyed playing the grand piano in the formal living room. As for location, it is within easy walking distance to downtown, the waterfront, etc.
I could go on and on (even more), but this long weekend was AMAZING!! We have already booked 2 more weeks in July. I honestly cannot imagine how anyone could ever be disappointed staying here and enjoying interacting with Kathy.
From the beginning Kathy was easy to communicate with through the whole rental process. As for the house,it is well maintained and spacious, a room for everything. My wife, myself, our younger son and my in-laws stayed in the house for 4 days while we were in the area for a fall New England wedding for our older son. We had originally planned for some site-seeing, but we all decided to chill out in the house during most of our stay. The sun room at the back of the house was our favorite spot, but I also enjoyed the living room where the fire place was, it was peaceful. The master bedroom was ours for the stay and it was awesome. My wife and I enjoyed the sites and smells from this room as well as the large bathroom. Having a place to park the cars was a great plus. Thank you Kathy for sharing such a lovely home while we enjoyed my son's wedding to a beautiful New England (Boston) girl.
I didn't want to leave and already booked for next year! The house is clean and well appointed. The owner takes wonderful care of the house and property and is very easy to communicate with. The house is located right in downtown Gloucester, so it is walking distance to restaurants and shops. Quick drive to world class beaches, Good Harbor and Wingearsheek. Great home for families or for a couples get away. The sun porch overlooking the harbor is my favorite room.
We had a fabulous time on Cape Ann. The house was perfect: great location, well appointed, lots of space, well cared for, and a great owner!
For a vacation on Cape Ann, you can't go wrong with this Gloucester location. Gloucester is a working town with a quaint restaurant row (Cape Ann Brewery and Zeke's) and main street and a nice harbor. In the immediate area, you are generally a 5 minute walk or a 10 minute car ride from plenty of options. You can walk to a Whale Watch cruise in less than five minutes, have plenty of beach options (Good Harbor Beach) in less than a ten minute drive, or be in Rockport minutes later (Robyn's Nest Gelato). The location is within a mile of the commuter rail stop for Gloucester. The commuter train takes you right to the North station in downtown Boston in an hour trip.
The home has lots of space, is very well cared for, and is a perfect home away from home. We had a group of five: Mom, Dad, Grandma, and two girls (10 and 13). The three bedrooms were perfect to accommodate all of us and were well appointed and very restful. We spent all of our waking hours in the kitchen, family room, and three-season room. There is additional space in a living and dining room. Parking is a non-issue as there is a spacious garage. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare and enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. (The are plenty of grocery store options nearby).
Finally, Kathy goes to great lengths to make sure you feel at home and get to know the area quickly. We took at least two of her recommendations on activities (I think actually more than two :)) and had a blast at both (Cape Ann Whale Watch and Sea Kayaking in Rockport). We needed some assistance on a minor issue midweek. I describe it as minor because it took one email to Kathy and the minor issue was resolved very quickly. Kathy is attentive, makes sure you have what you need, and respects your privacy. Couldn't ask for a better situation.
If we go back to the North Shore, this will be top of our list for lodging and we'll recommend this to our friends.
The house is wonderful, and Kathy has thought of everything to make you feel welcome, comfortable, and relaxed. It's immaculately clean, and well-appointed. From the moment you arrive, you feel "on vacation" in a truly special space. Fully-stocked, great beds and linens. Beautifully decorated. Spectacular view of the harbor. All that you need and more. (Even if what you need is a grand piano.) Really! Could not have asked for a better week away!
Gloucester is the oldest working seaport and art colony in America, and prides herself on not being 'touristy'. This is also one of the top five whale watching areas in the world! There's so much to do here: charter fishing, hiking, biking, shopping, kayaking, birding (one of the top areas in the US), sunset schooner cruises, theaters, museums, live music, beautiful beaches, tours, world-class dining. Boston is only 50 minutes away by train or car.
Other Activities: kayaking, deep sea fishing, whale watching, museums, art colonies.
