Lovely place to stay

Our family (2 adults, 2 kids) had a wonderful stay here. This property is beautiful inside and out. The pictures don't lie. I would highly recommend it. The bed is very comfortable, and the kids were fine on the futon. The kitchen had everything we needed. Everything was spotless. I never could figure out how to work the steam shower, but we were happy with the "regular" setting. It's very near the ferry terminal, which was convenient for our early morning departure, but it's tucked away in trees so you don't see the dock. I loved being away from the cruise ship crowds. We took a walk downtown and couldn't get out of there fast enough. Our recommendations: The Island Pub on Douglas Island, the Silverbow Bakery and the Hot Bite were great. I wish we had gone to Tracy's Crab Shack instead of the Twisted Fish. Whale watching with Orca Enterprises was unbelievable -- we saw humpbacks bubble netting twice and orcas chasing down a sea lion! The East Glacier hike at Mendenhall was lovely but a bit strenuous for me. The kids (ages 7 and 10) did fine. Start from behind the Visitors Center; you will climb up on switchbacks, whereas if you start in the other direction, you climb straight up a lot of stairs at one time. We did a hokey gold panning tour with Best of Alaska, but the kids liked it. And it was interesting to see how hard the Gold Rush prospectors had to work for very little pay off. We absolutely loved Southeast Alaska!
