Our beautiful modern country home is located in a secluded wooded area on 3 acres bordering the Mohonk Preserve. Walk out of the house into the Shwangunks through the back of Minnewaska to streams, or on fully conserved country roads and fields into the back of the Mohonk ridge. You can hike to the river or to a pond.
The house is 12 years old with an open floor plan, cathedral ceilings, cedar beams, skylights and floor-to-ceiling working stone fireplace. It has hardwood floors throughout. There are two bedrooms on the main floor and one on the upper floor. The house is built into a hillside, so the basement has its own entrance directly at ground level. It also has its own bathroom, two futons and some mattresses that kids can use to sleep on the floor.
The house is fully air conditioned, and has internet access and all modern appliances. It has a working fireplace, an open kitchen, bright colors; it is flooded with light, has antiques, and is homey and pleasant. The large deck offers lovely mountain views.
Hike, walk, snowshoe and cross country ski from the front door, or go to nearby Minnewaska State Park or the Mohonk Preserve. Excellent shopping, restaurants, antiques, art galleries, cinema and theater are nearby.
We are a college professor and a psychotherapist; our principal residence is in central New Jersey.
The house is our family's vacation home, which we rent out when we're not using it ourselves. We intend to retire there in a few years, so we take care to maintain it and improve upon it.
We chose this property because it is situated beautifully on a dead-end road with conserved areas all around. The house is surrounded by lawns and woods; we see song birds, deer, and occasionally turkeys or a fox; but no other houses.
On the other hand, we are not far from the cultural and shopping opportunities of New Paltz, Kingston and even Woodstock.
Our house is very quiet and peaceful, a great place to unwind or to concentrate on creative work (for which cable internet access can be advantageous). We love the deck, which looks out on lawns and woods with a vista of a mountain; and we can also grill and dine there. Indoors, the cathedral ceiling and open living spaces provide excellent acoustics, and the fireplace offers a cozy area for conversation, listening to music and reading.
We also like to walk in the woods, and our house is an excellent location for activities such as hiking and bird-watching.
