Villa Apartment in Historic Converted Convent.

Accomodation: 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment (sleeps 8-10)

2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment (sleeps 4-6)

This old villa was completely restored in 2000 and was previously one of the old convents of Barga, standing just below the Duomo (cathedral). The location of Villa Speranza on the walled perimeter of the ancient centro storico (Old Town) accounts for the superlative views over the surrounding hills.

Barga is an ideal location from which to explore the Cinque Terre, Florence, Pisa, Lucca and the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast. The great national park of the Apuane mountains offers stupendous hiking and the ski resort of Abetone is only an hour away.

The property has been restored to a high standard while maintaining its unique character and offers luxury with every modern convenience. The rooms are spacious and adorned with Tuscan paintings and some are furnished with fine antique furniture. The views over the surrounding hills are stupendous but the calm and peaceful traffic-free piazza fronting the villa is only 3 minutes walk from all the shops, restaurants and facilities of the town.

The villa has an excellent heating system and is warm in winter but cool in summer owing to its thick walls and the fact that Barga stands at an elevation of over 400 metres (1300 feet). Apartment guests enjoy a private first floor terrace which is ideal for relaxing with a good book or an evening aperitif watching the sun go down.

Barga is ideal for those looking for the unique experience of living in a small mediaeval town with a peaceful environment but with a lively programme of activities. Barga has it’s own 18th century theatre and is renowned for its summer opera and jazz festivals and Medici costume pagents such as the summer crossbow competition which is attended by teams from all over Italy. The fine Barga swimming pool complex is also within easy walking distance. The restaurants of the area offer traditional Tuscan food and wines at easily affordable prices for the family.

For those wishing to learn the art of genuine Tuscan cuisine, the owners arrange cooking lessons in the superbly equipped apartment kitchen conducted by one of Barga's professional restaurant lady chefs. Guided hikes of the Alpi Apuane Park are also arranged by prior request and these are conducted by an experienced guide of the Club Alpini.

The owners also offer guests staying for more than one week the option of splitting their vacation in Tuscany between this property and their comfortable apartment in Florence. During their stay in the City of Art, individual customized guided tours can be provided by a family member who is fluent in English and a qualified and licenced guide of the City.(see VRBO listing 217194 for details of the Florence property)

About The Owner

The owner is a professional engineer who worked on construction projects all over the world before retiring to Italy with his wife in 2001. Italy was the choice not only because of the wealth of art and history, fine climate, cuisine and wine but also because Italian society is solidly founded on extended family values and loyalty to ones comunity which ensures that newcomers who settle there are accepted with friendliness and respect.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 1998
Why The Owner chose Barga

The owner purchased Villa Speranza in 1998 when it was in a sorry state after being abandoned for many years. He decided that the building was so important to the fabric and history of Centro Storico that it must be restored. The work took two years to complete and the project was granted a certificate of occupancy in 2001. Further improvements have been made durign every year since. The apartment allows visitors the unique experience of residing in comfort in this delightful historical setting while the rental income enables the owner to maintain this ancient building for future guests to enjoy.

Clean, sleek, comfortable, roomy, upscale apartment- highly recommend the area too!

Our party consisted of four adults, thus we rented the 2 bathroom/3 bedroom option. The owners speak English and helped to acquaint us to the area. Our quarters were modernly outfitted and spacey. This location is a.5-2 hours from Pisa, Florence, Cinque Terre by rental car. Only 45 minutes to Lucca. There are so many good restaurants in Barga. The walled city of Barga and the "new town" (outside the walled city) have so much to offer. We are planning to come back in two years. There is a lot to do that we didn't do (tour of the agri businesses, olive groves, marble/granite businesses, caves, etc). You can't beat the hospitality!! The photos do not do this villa any justice!

Stunning views, Picturesque town, Fantastic Apartment and Sensational Hosts

My young family and I (2 adults and 3 small children) were lucky enough to travel from Australia and stay in this fantastic apartment for 6 months. The apartment was spacious, clean, warm and offered everything you could possibly need. The views were stunning along the Tuscan valley or out over the ancient roof tops of the walled city of Barga.

Our hosts, Tony and Carla, were sensational from the moment we contacted them over the internet to the moment we left the apartment. Their local knowledge and generosity of spirit made us feel like part of the community, and we are now extremely lucky to call them good friends.

Whether you are a couple, group or family, this apartment will suit your every need. It is wonderfully furnished and it's proximity to cafes, restaurants, the mountains and the local village is excellent.

We can't wait to go back!!!

The Enchanted Converted Convent!

We have travelled all over the world, and to Italy and Europe a dozen times. Never in all of these years, did we discover a home as charming and memorable as this one! Every detail has been thought out with an eye to beauty, comfort and function. The apartment is kept in immaculate condition. The owner, Tony Wilton, and his wife are lovely, intelligent people, who made our stay even more memorable. Barga is without doubt, the most enchanted medieval town in Tuscany. The people, the food, the sights -- are exceptional. The photos provided were good, but the actual interiors were incredible. We cannot wait to return again to this converted convent where memories are made that will last a lifetime!
