amazing getaway

  • 5 of 5
Absolutely phenomenal little holiday spot! A friend of ours had stayed here and loved it, and recommended it as a good option for our 4 day visit to Big Sur. We were lucky to find our dates available and truly enjoyed our restorative time here.

It's extremely private - nobody can see into the property so it feels very remote, restful and quiet. We loved the set-up with the separate bathhouse (with a floor-to-ceiling window!), the main house, the outdoor patio and fireplace, and of course the sleeping yurt. Something about the circular ratio of the yurt made it feel incredibly relaxing and restful. The outdoor patio is phenomenal place to take in the views, enjoy some wine next to a fire, and find a few moments of peace in this busy world.

One night we had a masseuse come up to the house and give individual massages in the main house - it was awesome to have a hot tub before and look out at the starts afterwards!

Everything is in lovely condition, Mary is very helpful, and check-in was easy.

A minor note: the map showing the location isn't accurate - it shows a totally different area, so if you're trying to be in a specific place, make sure to talk to the owner about the specific location. That was a bit confusing to us at first.

We'd love to come back sometime and highly recommend this for couples and dear friends looking for a gorgeous and relaxing spot in Big Sur!

What Big Sur is about

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I had a great stay at the Dream Home. The road was not a problem, the host was very helpful. The location was perfect. But, what put it over the top was the privacy, and the darkness. I miss stars. Our first night we had a fire in the outdoor fireplace, enjoyed a glass of wine, and just watched the stars turn on one by one until the milky way became visible, satellites could be seen slowly crossing the sky and the occasional shooting star zipped overhead. I think you go to Big Sur for the beauty and remoteness. There are no chain stores, no billboards, none of the trappings of modern life. You want to stay somewhere that enhances that feeling. Sure you could stay at one of the lodges, but that's not for us.....and if you agree, this is the place to stay. Be forewarned...if you like the lap of luxury, stay somewhere else. But if you like a very comfortable bed in a yurt, a private, outdoor living space for dining and relaxing, and a view unsullied by man, stay here. You won't regret it.

Great location and Unique Accommodations for a True Getaway

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I were looking for a place where we could plant ourselves for a week and do day hikes and excursions. This house really fit the bill. You are close enough to Carmel and Monterey if you want access to lots of restaurants but you are also very much up in the mountains and feel like you are away from it all. The house has everything you need. We initially weren't sure if we were going to sleep in the house or the Yurt but quickly found the Yurt was the place to be. Although the temps got down between 45-50 degrees each night, we were plenty warm with the two down comforters that were on the bed. The bedroom in the house requires you to climb a fairly steep latter which was not something I think I could navigate if I had to get up in the middle of the night. We loved the hot tub outside, and especially the bathroom, which is its own building and has floor to ceiling windows looking out into the forest. The house itself is all windows which gives it a very unique feel. Mary, our host could not have been more accommodating and was always available day or night if we had questions.

If you are into hiking, we highly recommend doing the Mill Creek hike which is only about 5 minutes from the house up the road. Its a two hour hike round trip with virtually no elevation climb through beautiful redwood forests but ends out in the open with incredible vistas of the Pacific Ocean and three very nice benches to sit on to enjoy a snack, lunch, or just the view. You will, however, need to get a permit for the hike online at the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District website as they only allow 8 hikers on the trail on any given day. Not sure why it is so restricted but definitely worth the hassle of getting a permit. Apply for the permit before you go because you will need to print it out and put in on your dash.

Dream home indeed.

Mary's home is my idea of paradise. It is so beautiful, so peaceful, and Big Sur is truly a magical place. As soon as you turn from Hwy 1 onto the road the house is on, you will know you're in for a treat. It's a winding, densely redwood, canyon road with treehouses climbing up both sides of the road. You feel like you're in a fairy tale. The property is very private, you can gate yourselves in and you won't see or hear another soul. The structures on the property are lovely works of art, built by Mary and her husband. You can feel the love and care that this place has received over the years. Mary's attention to detail is impressive, little touches of beauty that make it so special, like flowers in the bathhouse and all the little pieces of art around. The wood stove in the cabin is one of my favorite features. It heats up the place in no time and it's so relaxing to sit by the fire in the absolute stillness. I love sleeping in the loft under the skylight. The yurt is beautiful too, but it was a bit chilly to sleep out there this time. You have everything you need here and you might not want to leave, but there is much to see and do in the area.
We had our private marriage ceremony here, and recently came back to celebrate our 5-year anniversary. Mary is so sweet and helpful. She's a delightful human being and we feel so blessed to have found her and her amazing dream home. Mary, thanks for sharing your place with us. We will be back!

Peace on Earth! Amazing!

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at the Dream Home on 10/8 and were supposed to stay just 2 nights, but ended up staying 3 nights because we didn't want to leave. First of all, the drive up the road to get to the home, is beautiful....a road through the forest of Redwood trees, up to the top of a ridge that held this awesome home. My boyfriend said he felt like we were in our own little town. There is the house (living room/study/kitchen/loft with queen bed), the bathroom, the Yurt and the outdoor fire area. We cancelled dinner reservations at local restaurants, so that we could stay at the house. We grilled out and drank wine in the hot tub and had an amazing nights sleep in the Yurt (so cool)! It gets chilly at night, so the hot tub got a lot of use and Oh My Gosh, how relaxing to sit in a hot tub, with a glass of wine and the stars shining so bright overhead. AMAZINGLY relaxing, romantic, and peaceful!! There isn't another house anywhere in site, unless you go back down to the road.....walk around naked and the birds might see you, but that's it. :) If you like the hustle and bustle of the city, this isn't the place for you. We spent the days before arriving, in San Francisco, and this was a great place to wind down before flying back home. I was hesitant to rent something from a person instead of a "company", but after my first conversation with Mary, I knew she was an honest individual....and when I met her in person....my gut feelings were right on....she is a sweet lady with a great spirit and very accommodating!!! Her gardens of plants/flowers/cactus are beautiful. Don't hesitate....rent this amazing retreat! We will return and hopefully sooner than later! Thanks again Mary for sharing your wonderful home with so many people....lucky people we are!!

A true Retreat

  • 5 of 5
If you are looking for a retreat with complete peace, relaxation, and solitude, this is the perfect place. Amazing views from inside and outside the home. It sits above the fog line so when the coast was foggy, this home was in full sun. We really didnt want to leave the home- it is so beautiful that it competes with the beauty of the Big Sur coastline. If you need to unplug and getaway from your daily grind, this is the place (although it does have a great plasma tv and internet access so you can stay plugged in if you must, however no cell reception). If you are looking for plush luxury, this might be too rustic since the yurt and the bathroom require walking a few steps outside the main house. The main house was warm during the day from the sun streaming in, and stayed toasty warm at night with the fire lit.

The owner Mary was great- very responsive, had great suggestions for dining and activities, and super sweet.

I definitely hope to come back!
