With expansive views of the Russian River, graceful hills and the Coast Range Mountains, Casa Lucia enjoys a beautiful, sunny setting with easy river access for kayaking, canoeing and swimming. The meadow between the house and the river has plenty of room to set up the net for volleyball and badminton, toss the Frisbee or play baseball. The wrap-around deck is the perfect place to watch the mist floating on the river in the early morning and for outdoor dining later in the day. A nighttime soak in the hot tub provides a front row seat for stargazing and the massage jets stimulate conversation and relaxation. For exercise we provide several kayaks and a family canoe as well as 4 adult bicycles, The cheerful kitchen is fully equipped and there are two old-fashioned gas fireplaces to keep you cozy on a chilly night. Stay connected with broadband internet and unlimited long distance phone calls.
Most people never want to leave this river house,: In the morning, breathe the fresh country air on a walk to the local bakery and enjoy pastries made in the wood-fired oven along with a perfect cup of coffee (they roast it right there in the shop). Duncans Mills is ideally situated on the river, only 10 minutes from the resort town of Guerneville and in the other direction, ten minutes from the ocean beaches. It was named for the sawmills that once cut timber to build and re-build San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake. It was the northern terminus of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad and the old Victorian station is still looking good as it approaches its 130th birthday. The turn of the century buildings have been lovingly cared for and provide a glimpse of small-town life 100 years ago. The town is well-known for its art galleries and restaurants.
If the urge to explore arises: you can hit the road and cruise along the river, past vineyards and through redwood forests. A few miles to the west are the ocean beaches and the rugged Sonoma Coast, to the east are the charming tasting rooms on the undiscovered Sonoma Wine Trail. You can pause in picturesque towns, and stroll through parks of giant redwoods that rival the worlds tallest trees. Dozens of food emporiums serve creative dishes with local produce and seafood. Unique shops feature handmade goods as well as coastal and redwood curios. Casa Lucia sleeps up to 6 adults, or up to 8 with children, between the two bedrooms and several open-up sofas in the sun room and the living room. There is a full bath with shower, a half bath, and an outdoor shower as well. The house is light and airy, with a generous dining area, living room and a spacious sunroom with river views from three walls of glass. Old fashion gas fireplaces will keep you cozy on a chilly night. The cheerful kitchen is fully equipped and includes stone countertops.

We live in the East Bay, but our family has enjoyed 'Russian River Life' for many, many years. We have taken our children to just about every beach, park and camping spot along the river. In 1989 we moved to Monte Rio where the kids went to elementary school. Alas, jobs and the city called us back, but our hearts were still with the River and we went back to visit frequently.
We bought our house on the river as a family project with 2 generations putting our savings together so we could have a place for the whole family to get together without the distractions of city life. We hope it can be that for your family as well.
A brief note of thanks and gratitute. We truly enjoyed our stay here. From early monring coffee and bird watching to wonderfully peaceful hours catching no fish what so-ever, every moment was fantastic! Thank you for your hospitality
We loved every minute of our stay in this lovely, extremely comfortable, and very well-appointed home. The owners were great and the photographs of the pictures cannot do the breathtaking scenery justice. Our two kids loved playing in the giant meadow and we saw an osprey dive! We were impressed by the thoughtful details (fresh flowers in several rooms) and the well-stocked kitchen. Overall a sweet place to relax with friends or loved ones and a great home base for exploring redwood groves, the Sonoma Coast, and the many other attractions in the area. Highly recommend!
Whether you want to get away for time with your sweetie or family and friends, Casa Lucia is a perfect spot. The views and access to the river are amazing. The house is clean, well decorated, and comfortable. It feels like home. The deck is great for hanging out, eating and catching some sun. My favorite treat is to have coffee first thing in the morning in the hot tub and watch the fog lift of the river. Even the outdoor shower is hot enough to make this comfortable. This is a great rental for 1-2 families with kids. There is plenty of common space so everyone can sprawl and watch movies or play games. It is great to have bikes, kayaks, and such to use. During this trip we went canoeing and took a refreshing swim in the river. The kitchen is well prepared with everything you need to cook. If you hit the Friday farmer's market in Occidental on the drive in, you can enjoy fresh seasonal produce as well. And Duncans Mils offers outstanding coffee at the Bakery, grass fed beef at the General Store, and there is a lovely tea shop as well with a amazing selection of teas. This is truly a family favorite and spot to return to again and again. P.S. The owner is a dream to work with.
We stayed at the Casa while doing wine tasting in nearby Healdsburg. The house was nicely appointed. I loved the Mexican/Spanish influence in the deco. When not on the deck we enjoyed the sunroom. I wish I could transport the sunroom and view to my own home.
The ktichen had everything you would need and we loved their cookware. The flowers placed throughtout the house was a very nice touch. Not alot in Duncan Mills (pop 85), but the bakery in town is great and the General Store across the street has what you need.
Do drive down to Jenner and/or Bodega Bay (quick drive away), the coastline is so beautiful.
My husband, 8 year old son and I were looking for a get away that would be comfortable and relaxing but would also have fun adventures to entertain our son and us. Casa Lucia was a wonderful find! The minute we walked in, it felt warm, welcoming and homey. I loved that you could see the deck, grassy yard and river from the moment you open the door. Our friends with 2 kids joined us for 3 nights and even tho the house has only 2 bedrooms, the shared space is very well laid out that we were able to all reside comfortably with out stepping on each other. I also loved that I could be in the kitchen cooking and see the kids on the grass or heading to the river. The yard is huge and shared with the few houses close by. During our stay only a few other (friendly) people were out there but because it was so big, it still felt very private. We loved that the house provided kayaks (3 seater and 2 seater) that we used everyday. Also a volleyball net that we put up on the first day and used many times. And lets not forget the hot tub. It is very inviting and easily accessible right there on the deck. With the outside shower right next to it, we were able to take dips it several times a day...especially after a day of kayaking. Loved the wildlife we saw too...seals (while kayaking), falcons, dear, humming birds, and a bald eagle! At night out on the deck you will hear nothing but the night air and frogs. Pretty lovely. The binoculars were a nice touch too. Thank you for sharing your home with others. We will be back again...and again and again...
We stayed for an anniversary weekend. The accommodations would have been perfect if we had been married in a different month. We had no issues with Casa Lucia, our issues were with the weather, which we were well aware of before booking, we'll get married in a different month next time.
Other than the factors beyond any of our control, the lodgings were all that we had hoped for, then you add the fresh flowers strewn about, the views, and all the little things that the photos don't show and the owners were too modest to mention.
And I need to thank them for the binocculars that they provided to watch the osprey and heron, the nice looking hot tub that we would have loved to use if it hadn't been raining, the well stocked pantry so we didn't have to buy foil at the Duncans Mills General Store, and all the other little things that showed us this was someone's home that they were generous enough to share with us. This wasn't furnished to just get a piece of furniture that would work, but rather a piece of furniture that someone carefully picked out. The kitchen had everything we needed. Guerneville and Safeway are just a few miles away if you decide you need something more.
I can not attest to the bikes or canoes other than that they were there, but the so was the rain.
If you visit, you really should also visit Duncans Mills, check out the General Store, Pig Alley and all the other little shops, you can easily spend an afternoon shopping and visiting with the local owners. They seemed to either treat like just folks or know how to play the game well.
I can't blame the owners for the weather, the wife won't let me. But I will blame the owners for provideding a gentle place to hunker down and view the weather. Y'all can go there in Summer, probable a real treat, but then you have to share it with all the other tourists, pay more, and won't get to bitch as much.
Thanks again to the owners for the flowers and the binnoculars, and all that other stuff,
Casa Lucia has been a long time favorite rental of ours, primarily because of it's location. Freezeout Road is set off the Russian River by maybe 40 feet and the windows in Casa Lucia afford a perfect riverscape view. We especially enjoy this home in the colder weather because it is so cozy and comfortable. The recent upgrades and cleanliness of the home have made it a premier Russian River rental, we feel. The local shops and restaurants, i.e. Cape Fear and Blue Heron, are wonderful and all within walking distance. We ventured up the coast to Ft. Ross, which is an interesting piece of California history. The 11 miles on scenic (and winding!!!) US Hwy 1, is about as much as we wanted to drive, so it's perfect. Watch out for cows, often on or crossing the highway and oblivious to traffic. Timber Cove Inn is a nice lunch spot, just another mile or so up the road.
Also, the owner is very thorough and helpful in the renting process.
Other Activities: kayaking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, wine-tasting, Hiking, Beach Combing
