We stayed in Haiko because friends of us recommended it to us as it is a good starting point to drive the road to Hana and it is also very close to the surfer town Lahaina. In total, we had 4 different rentals throughout our journey on the hawaiian islands, all more or less in the same price range.
Driving up to the property, we found the neighborhood being a little messy. Nevertheless, arriving there was a pleasant surprise. Roger, the owner had just installed an outside shower so we could take a shower outside after a "sandy" beach day.
The appartment is located on the top level of their house with a seperate entrance. After having arrived, Roger gave us a tour through the appartment which was very clean at first sight and nicely furnished. Also, there was everything you could need, -like a huge DVD collection, kitchen supplies, beach towels, etc.
We found a huge plate with fresh fruit from their own garden as a welcoming gift, and later, Roger also gave us a tour through his garden with all its fruit plants, the cat feeding area, etc.
The first morning, we found some cockroaches in the kitchen cupboards which were already dead. Not such a pleasant surprise, but than again, I guess that is quite normal when you live in the tropics. We kept on finding one or two of them about every day, but always dead. So I guess, there is some good treatment in the appartment to keep them out.
Roger would always come out of the house every morning to talk with us about our plans and to make sure, we knew everything we needed to know. He always had some good tips for our day trips around the island! Also, he likes to make some jokes and comments, so he is always a fun person to talk to.
The fish market in Lahaina is a great place to get your dinner and that of course was one of Rogers recommendations. Also, he always knew, where the best snorkeling spots where to see sea turtles, etc.
After all, the appartment is a nice place to stay in. The kitchen cupboards could have been a little bit cleaner, though. The photos shown on internet are absolutely honest. The ocean view is exactly as represented on the pictures. The living area is very nice, too. It has a very comfortable modern sofa, huge TV, even some books. Roger is a very nice, funny and caring host who is interested in many things and who tries to run his place very sustainable regarding the enviroment (water is being heated with solar energy, there is fresh, organic fruit, etc.). Thank you for a great stay!
