We welcome you to Hacienda San Fernando. Our sixty-five acre property is uniquely situated on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Hacienda San Fernando is made up of thirty acres of both cleared fields and jungle areas. There are several fun hiking trails which run through the property. Numerous fruit trees including oranges, lemons, pineapples, bananas, papayas and avocados can be found on the property and available to renters. Our gated driveway is nearly one-half mile long.
There are four homes on the property which all overlook the ocean. The three bedroom, two bathroom main house is situated on the very top of the property. In the main house, all of the bedrooms, the living room, the dining room and the kitchen face the Pacific Ocean. The large living room has six french doors that open up on to the deep-water kidney-shaped pool.
One of the guesthouses has two bedrooms and one bathroom. The other guesthouse has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and large outdoor deck. The main house and guesthouses are all air conditioned. The fourth house is used by our caretaker and his wife.
The sunset views over the Pacific from the veranda are truly breathtaking. Views of Playa Carrillo, Playa Samara, Playa Buena Vista and Playa Barrigona can be seen from the property. The sense of quiet and peace on the property is very calming. Sunsets may also be enjoyed from the pool or from the twelve person jacuzzi which overlooks the ocean.
The property is a nature lover's paradise. Expect daily visits from monkeys, parakeets, iguanas, armadillos and toucans. Feel free to explore the vast property on nature trails that run throughout the hacienda. Exotic flowers and plants along with native animal life are everywhere.
Our caretaker, Freddy, and his wife, Luisa, live in a home on the property (far away from the main house) and are very helpful. Daily laundry service and maintenance of the home is included. A chef is also available for hire at an additional cost.
Samara is a charming village with natural beauty. The town of Samara and its surrounding area offer a large variety of plants and the shelter of a coral reef offshore. The area is an excellent vacation spot with ocean and river kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, boat tours, fishing, canopy tours and ultralight flights all within minutes of the property. The local restaurants are excellent and serve a range of cuisines including native Costa Rican foods, fish, Italian, barbeque and more.

My wife and I visited Samara, Costa Rica during our honeymoon in 1996. We met a local Samara resident who explained that his family was selling some undeveloped property. Just before sunset one evening we climbed to the top of the property for sale and watched a beautiful sunset over the ocean. Later that evening we negotiated the purchase of the property while eating fresh ceviche.
After returning to the U.S. we retained an attorney from San Jose who was recommended by the U. S. Embassy and soon closed on the property. After hiring an architect and sending plans back and forth between the U.S. and Costa Rica we figured out a design for the main house. Nine months later the main house and pool were constructed.
Over the years since the initial construction we have purchased additional surrounding property and now have over sixty-five acres. In addition to the main house, the property now consists of two guesthouses, a caretaker's home and a detached garage. There is also a large, thatched-roof playhouse for children.
Our children have thoroughly enjoyed all that our home and Samara has to offer. They have become accomplished surfers and we have all become tropical nature enthusiasts.
The views, the house and the playa are amazing!! This getaway is perfect for all kinds of trips with all kinds of people. The main house is equipped with the best pool ever, this is where we spent most of our time while in the house. Anything you are looking for, restaurants, beaches, activities, can be located about 5 minutes away.
The groundskeepers are a very nice family that live on the property but away from the main home, they keep everything looking great and clean. There is enough room in the main house for 6-7 people, the guest houses fit maybe 4-6 more in total. This would be a great Group vacation spot!!
All in all my experience at this home was nothing short of amazing.
Relax, enjoy and visit this beautiful Hacienda. It's the perfect get away for you and your family. You got an amazing view on three different beaches. Nature is all around the property and the unmatched privacy. The house keepers Freddy and his wife are beutiful and extremely kind people. Truly we don't have any complains. We are hoping visit anytime soon. It's true what every else said, you will need an 4x4 car to get to the top of the property, but nevertheless is part of an great experience. Also all modern gadgets can be found, internet, satellite tv, etc for whom may need it.
Regards from a tico.
We were a group of 6 friends who stayed here the entire month of January, 2014. The home is well-maintained, other than a couple of issues which I'll mention below. The main house is truly beautiful, all graceful curves and fabulous views from the living room and all three bedrooms. The kitchen is adequate (no dishwasher, but there is a 4-burner stove, a microwave, fridge & toaster oven). The pool and patio areas are truly amazing, and make the place quite unforgettable. We spent the vast majority of our time outside around the pool, where there was ALWAYS a wonderful breeze. The pool was big (maybe 40 ft), and deep enough for diving, but strangely it had no steps. Freddy kept it immaculate, cleaning the pool at least twice a day. Freddy and Louisa were very helpful, but be forewarned that neither of them speaks English. (We used Google Translate to converse with them.) Yes, the driveway is scary the first time, but you do get used to it and it never posed a problem. A 4x4 is definitely mandatory. It's about a 15 minute drive to town or the beach. The home was very comfortable, although all the beds in the main house are "futon" type mattresses, and quite hard. The master suite is lovely, very spacious with a large closet and a trippy shower (the master bath is in one of the round, tiki-roofed strutures). Speaking of bathrooms, only the 2 bathrooms in the main house have hot water. Those in the two guest houses are cold water only; apparently the Cabina is supposed to have hot water, but the hot water heater was broken during our visit, as was the A.C. in the upstairs cabina BR. Also, the 2-story Cabina, which is where the cold-water spa is located, is somewhat isolated from the main house, down a flight of 72 steps, and there is no wi-fi reception down there. On the plus side, the downstairs Cabina BR is spacious and lovely, with a good queen-size bed and a big patio area with great views. The other 2-BR guest house is just 20 feet from the main house, and is quite cute. Both beds in the little guest house have innerspring mattresses. However, only one of the BRs has AC; you leave the door between the BRs open to have AC in the center BR. Also, you must go thru the center BR to get to the bathroom, the exterior door or the 2nd bedroom, so the center BR in the guest house is "semi-private". Having 30 acres makes it very quiet, private & secure, though the land is too steep for walking! But it's fabulous, & staying here made us feel like royalty!
My friends and I take several trips every year and due to a coin toss this January we lucked out and went to Costa Rica. We rented this property for week, we arrived just before sunset... WOW! The photos in this vrbo listing does not do it justice! Freddy & Louisa are wonderful. Everything you need is at the house and it's roughly a 15 minute drive from the closest beach and the town of Samara. You could hear the sound of Howler Monkies through out the day... there were a few on the property during our stay! The sunsets are remarkable from Hacienda San Fernando. Do you see how everyone writes you need a 4x4 to get up the driveway? It's TRUE! This is a perfect house for any group travelling.
8 of us stayed at Hacienda San Fernando for a week. The views are unbelievable and the pictures do not do it justice. The driveway really does need a 4x4 to navigate, but after the first couple of trips it doesn't seem so bad. Excellent vacation hideaway if you want seclusion and close enough to many fun excursions. Freddy and Luisa were very patient, friendly and accommodating, but brush up on you Spanish before you go. Playa Barrigona is a must see (if you can find it) and Flying Crocodiles Gyro-copter was my personal highlight. We did see monkeys on the property as well and tarantulas and scorpions! Awesome property, highly recommended
A four wheel drive vehicle is a must if you wish to drive up to this mountain top paradise. In every sense, Costa Rica is a very peaceful and relaxing paradise. Hacienda San Fernando is all that and more.To open the back doors onto the beautiful pool side and slide or jump into the gorgeous pool at the end of an adventurous day was one way to get refreshed, share a visit with the howler monkies and watch the most incredible sunsets. We found it to be stress free to say the least. The most beautiful beaches, Samara, Carrillo and Barrigona beaches are all close by and stunning.
The care takers, Freddie, Louisa and Ivan are all very nice and beautiful people. We found them to be very helpful. They had everything ready and waiting for us to begin our incredible week at Hacienda San Fernando which was gorgeous. We loved every minute of our stay!
We have traveled to places around the world and our only annual return will be to Hacienda San Fernando for the peace of mind and relaxation found only here.
