Nice Home - Bad Management

Kansas Family Kansas
Review Submitted: December 17, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
This house is advertised with a hot tub. There was a tub on site but the mechanical panel was off and was not in working condition. The house itself was nice with the exception it was not properly cleaned prior to our arrival. We even questioned if it had been cleaned at all. There was a note from housekeeper for people staying a prior to us. The kitchen had food and fingerprints all over the countertops and appliances. There was sticky food on the couch. The masterbed was made but there were hairs in the bed. We cleaned the house and changed bedding ourselves. A mirror fell during the night, had been hung with a very small nail, we cleaned that too. The house was undusted and the yard had food and beer cans strewn around, looked like there had been a party. The owners were notified when we returned and I was told I should have called while we were out there...why, when the hot tub could not be refilled, heated and have chemicals adjusted in the three days we were visiting. I ask for some reimbursement for the lack of a hot tub but never had a reply from the owners. I had even discussed the tub with the owner before booking and she mentioned maybe it would snow and be fun for us. Well it snowed plenty and would have been nice had we had a working tub. I understand owners have to rely on housekeepers to clean and we took care of that issue and did not ask for compensation, but when a property is advertised with certain amenities and they are not available a discount is expected and should be offered. We have only had positive experiences in the 20 years we have be coming to Estes Park prior to this one. We visit 3-4 times a year but would not rent from these owners again.
Owner's Response: The cleaner at that time has been fired. We had no idea the house was in this order until the renters arrived and called us. Regarding the mirror, in the two years we lived in the home we had that mirror hanging there on the same nail and not once did it ever fall. The nail was secured in an eight inch log.
Regarding the hot tub, we have hired a professional company to maintain the tub and all chemicals, electrical fixtures and cleaning. Once again this was the first time that our house was out of order.
Of all the renters we have had this has been the ONLY bad experience, only because we were not notified until this renter had arrived. We deducted the cleaning bill from their total and did not charge them and this was done at my will and not being asked by the renter to deduct it.
We have renters who are more than willing to give you their review of our home which has been outstanding.

Lovely Vacation Home, Labor day Weekend

Family Labor Day Get-Away Centennial, CO
Review Submitted: September 16, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Our family had a wonderful time staying at this property. We are from Denver and had several family members come from Arizona to celebrate our fathers 84th birthday. It was a perefect mountain cabin setting for the Labor Day weekend. The home was everything and more than we expected. It was very clean and had everything we needed. We especially enjoyed the fire pit where we would sit around and tell storeis and make s'mores. The location was perfect, we were able to go on a walk every morning to enjoy the weather and the incredible views and wild life. The inside was very spacious and open, great for family gatherings. The large round dinning table was great, it allowed all of us to sit together while eating and play games in the evenings. We spent lots of time just lounging on the wrap-around porch enjoying the mountain views. We also put the hot tub to good use when it got chilly in the evenings. The managment was extremely welcoming and made sure that we had everything we needed to make our stay a great experience. This house exceeded all of our expectations and turned our family get-away into a perfect Labor Day weekend.

Very disappointing - do not stay here

KarenE Houston, TX
Review Submitted: August 28, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Our stay in this home was very disappointing. We have rented other vacation homes in the past and have never had an experience like we had here. This was a family trip with 6 adults and 2 kids. I was drawn to this house because of the descriptions of the yard, creek out back, hot tub and fire ring. The owner also described over the phone a secluded location with mountain views and 5 bicycles that would be available for our use. My kids were very excited about all of these things, as was the rest of our family. Upon our arrival, we found an overgrown yard, a creek that was totally inaccessible and a fire ring area also overgrown. There were no bicycles. The hot tub was very unappealing because of the yard area surrounding it and the debris around it. There was a limited mountain view from one side of the house, and houses behind and on the other side. The house is very close to the road and traffic is heard from the upstairs bedroom throughout the night. I notified the owner upon our arrival that we could not find the bikes. She was going to call the previous renters and call me back, but never did. I called again on 2 occasions while we there and left messages. My calls were not returned. The home itself was dirty and many items were not in working condition. Handwritten notes were taped on the master shower concerning a leak and also on a stove burner saying not to use. The kitchen is lacking in cooking utensils, cutting knives and containers for food serving and storage. Many lightbulbs were burned out and doors did not close properly. While the physical layout of the house was as described and definately met our needs, it is in need of major maintainance and up-keep. We have rented other vacation homes and have never experienced a property in such poor condition.
Contact was made with the owner upon returning home. A request of one night's rental fee was requested. The owner issued a return far less than that amount, which only covered the cost of the bicycles that we rented for one day. No compensation was offered for any of the other problems. Subsequent attempts to contact the owner by phone and email have gone unreturned.
Do not rent from these owners. This property is not as described, is not well-maintained and the owners do not provide good customer service. What they do provide is excuses for everything.
Owner's Response: If you will notice once a year we get a bad review from one renter out of the whole year that we have it rented out. This is definitely our one.
I received a phone call from this renter during the day and I heard her mention the bicycles and unable to find more toilet tissue, she was on Trail Ridge Road and we lost connection. Later that night or the she called and she asked about refunding the cost of the bicycle rental. I told her I would speak to my husband about this. That night I was heading out of town to meet my family in San Diego and we received a call that a family member committed suicide. This was very traggic for our family and YES, I did not get to call her back and honestly she was the last thing on my mind and I apologize. I'm sorry she thought this was an excuse.
We found out that the lawn maintenance crew hadn't been there for two weeks so yes it was grown up some. Estes doesn't have manicured lawns because of the wildlife that eat everything. Some people aren't used to this. She sent us a picture of one weed that was on the patio by the hot tub but it was by no means obstructing any views. The lawn was taken care of.
As for the house being dirty....over the past year we have had nothing but praise from renters about how clean it is kept. The renters the week before and afterwards commented on how clean it was to us. There may have been some light bulbs up on the 23 foot ceilings that were out and we have to call someone else in to change that besides our cleaning crew. Our kitchen is stocked with everything. I spoke with the renters the following week making sure they had everything they needed in there and they were very satisfied. Our knives may not be as sharp as some maybe used too.
We have a sign in the master bath asking renters not to use the four body jets because the back wall is log, the house has settled. They have a tendency to aim them directly at the log wall and it leaks in the garage. The shower head works beautifully, large shower and doesn't hit that wall. Sign on stove said to light the right side with a lighter because the igniter was out but works now.
Screen doors on the outside don't fit snuggly due to settling of the house and warm temperatures.
Log homes take a lot of adjustments throughout the year. All doors with locks work well.
I did email her and explained this to her and refunded her $200 which was more than the rental.
We can provide letters from renters who are extremely happy.

Great home for our extended family gathering

Okies in Colorado Moore Oklahoma
Review Submitted: July 5, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We stayed in this home with my husbands family which was 4 couples and our children. We found the home to be very clean and the management to be very helpful in the few circamstances that we needed to contact them. The home is located so that you feel like you are out in the middle of nowhere, but you are just a few minutes from town and the entrance of the Rocky Mountain National Park. We loved our time there and would recommend it to anyone looking for a home in Estes Park. Very nice and well maintained property.

Great Family Vacation Home

Roger and Gini Saint Paul, MN
Review Submitted: June 15, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Our group of nine included parents, 2 sets of grandparents, and 3 grandchildren and we had a delightful week at this family home which was very clean and accurately described. The 7 and 9 year old grandsons loved the open stairway to the second floor and called the cabin "awesome". A bonus for us was the 4 elk that were in the backyard one morning and the robin nest above the deck where we watched the adults feed the 3 babies and then saw them fly away, one by one. The location was quiet but convenient to our favorite hiking trails. A new discovery for us was Lily Mountain trail, just a few miles down the road, which has awesome view of the entire park. It is a 900 foot climb and 2 miles one-way but worth it on a clear day. We enjoy cooking and prepared all of our dinners as we enjoyed the views to the outside as we cooked. We took advantage of the hot tub and made three fires in the fire pit as we enjoyed s'mores. We stay in many vacation rentals by owner and this was almost as good as it gets and a very good value for the money. A few more small juice/milk glasses for the grandsons, some measuring cups for the cooks and some large red wine glasses for the adults would have made it perfect.

Tammy, thanks for sharing this home. Roger and Gini, Saint Paul, MN
