(5-Star Review as posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo)

We recently had the wonderful experience of attending our son and daughter-in-law's wedding on beautiful Waimanalo Beach. I always do a lot of research before we go on a trip and this journey was certainly no exception. I feel we were very fortunate to have stumbled on Hale 'Nalo when looking for the perfect place to stay during this very special vacation.

We booked one of the Garden Suites and were impressed with Herlinda's response and care right from the start. After arriving in Honolulu and picking up your rental car, it was a nice little road trip to Hale 'Nalo, thanks to Herlinda's wonderful directions. We arrived around 10 PM and were so pleased to have Herlinda quietly come out to greet and welcome us. As other reviewers have noted, it is like meeting a friend. This property owner is so warm, kind, and friendly. Herlinda is always there for you during your stay without being obtrusive in any way. She is a delight!

We are beach loving Baby Boomers and so Hale 'Nalo was pure perfection for us. It is just a short stroll down a quiet path from the property to the most spectacular beach. Soft white sand, turquoise water, and the feeling of practically having the beach to yourself...it's incredible! And Herlinda had everything we needed, including a cooler and some pretty awesome beach chairs, too! :)

The Garden Suite itself was a perfect sized space for us. The cathedral ceiling is spectacular, and we were kept quite comfortable with the large ceiling fan and slider doors to let in the breezes. We enjoyed the kitchenette with the small fridge and fabulous induction cooktop. The bathroom is super roomy and you also have lots of closet space including nifty luggage racks.

Now for some of the best parts of Hale 'Nalo...the peace and beautiful sounds. Every night we went to sleep to the roar of the ocean waves, and every morning we were awakened by the sweetest symphony of bird songs. Just lovely!

Herlinda is a wealth of knowledge about this beautiful area, so no matter what you want to do, she will have the perfect suggestions. We especially loved driving into Kailua to enjoy the delicious breakfast at Cinnamon's Restaurant. I will dream of Guava Chiffon Pancakes from now on. :)

We were delighted with our choice of Hale 'Nalo and in fact, cannot wait to return. Mahalo, Herlinda! We look forward to our next visit!

Took a few years off to sail across the Pacific Ocean on a 29' sailboat. Saw gorgeous beaches all along the way: from San Diego south to Cabo San Lucas (Mexico), to the Marquesas and westward to the Great Barrier Reef. So many beautiful beaches, but I choose to settle in Waimanalo because, well, honestly, the blue of the ocean and the incredible beauty of this island takes my breath away each and every day.

Herlinda Lopez purchased this studio in 2008

Authentic small-town Hawaii. The most gorgeous beach in the world, but you'll have it to yourself most of the time. Experience Hawaii like a local! One guest said 'We arrived as 'guests', but when we left we felt like family'. My wish for all who come :)

Hale 'Nalo is an intimate beachside retreat located in a beautiful tropical setting. Three self-catering independent studio units, newly constructed in 2008. Simplicity, quiet, solitude, ocean, birdsong. Aloha, Namasté, and Welcome!

GREAT PLACE TO STAY

  • 5 of 5
I could not imagine staying in beautiful tropical Hawaii in a hotel or high rise. This wonderful B & B is set in a lovely tropical garden which is a great place to bird watch. Since it is 3 houses from the beach, you can enjoy your jet lag by greeting the sunrise on a perfect sand beach with few visitors and a great view.

The reviews before mine have said it all, great garden, wonderful spacious rooms as pictured, supplies laid in, kitchen and outdoor barbecue set up and a warm host who feels like a friend immediately. Making my own breakfast was a plus for me with my gluten free diet. I've been to many, many B & B's and this one is at the top of my list of favorites

PARADISE FOUND RIGHT HERE AT HALE NALO

  • 5 of 5
This neat and tidy studio is the perfect place to relax, after a wounderful day on the nicest, and quietest beach in all of Oahu. Herlinda and her friendly dog helped to make our anniversary a week of happiness in paradise. Wakeing to the sound of the surf and birds singing in the AM is awesome, enjoying a cool drink in the beautiful back yard at sunset, life doesn't get any better then that. All the things you need for a great vacation are at your disposal, the pictures don't lie. We would not hesitate to come back to Hale Nalo paradise found. Marty & Millie.

GREAT EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5
Hale’Nalo was a perfect place for our stay at Waimanalo. The owners were great hosts, very friendly and available at any time, we needed them - f.e. we had locked our studio – key inside :/ Especially the Lilikoi-testing we really enjoyed and it always will stay in our mind! We enjoyed having breakfast in the nice tropical garden and the way to the beach are a few steps only. The studio itself is very comfortable, spacious and equipped with all items you need for a perfect vacation. So we can warmly recommend Hale’Nalo to anyone, and we are very thankful, that we found this lovely property!

GREAT ESCAPE!

  • 5 of 5
On Oahu, Waimanalo has the best beach and it is only two doors down from this restful retreat. The very calm, quiet and serene residential neighborhood is perfect for those looking for a true Hawaiian experience without all the tourist traps. We thoroughly enjoyed the quite residence, sounds of the ocean, and waking up to the beauty and sounds Waimanalo.
The owner greeted us upon arrival, provided areas of interest, and was incredibly helpful when my husband locked the keys in the car in the driveway.
Definitely would return!

Owner's Response: It was our great pleasure hosting your stay. Not only did we enjoy you, but Sophie (our sweet girl pooch) couldn't keep herself from you. We're glad you found a friend in her. As for the keys...we're just glad you made your flight. Well - sort of! With aloha, HN

NICE, BUT COULD BE BETTER.

  • 3 of 5
My husband & I recently stayed here. Herlinda was a very nice host, & very welcoming. Hale Nalo was a great location;close to the beaches and not far from restuarants/shops. It was located in a quiet neighborhood, and very serene.

While we loved the location, there are a few things that could be improved. These suggestions are based on our personal preferences & think it would be helpful for future guests.

We felt the bed was very hard & uncomfortable. I have a bad back & my pain greatly increased the next day after sleeping on the bed. We knew we wouldn't be able to enjoy our trip if the bed issue wasn't addressed, so we bought a foam bed topper while there. After it was added it was a Huge Improvement. When we left we gave it to our friends we were visiting but suggest adding something as simple as a foam bed topper(Target ($150) where we purchased it).It would greatly improve the bed. It made a huge difference for us and I'm sure it would be much more comfortable for those staying there.

There is no a/c and we felt it was very hot at night. Leaving the windows and doors open wasn't much reprieve. It was often sticky in the room from the humidity.I can't imagine staying here during summers when it's really hot out. People may be really uncomfortable sleeping if they can't get cool at night. We suggest adding an a/c, it probably would only be run at night & appliances have come a long way in being more efficient & cost effective. It would be nice for people to have an option if the heat is difficult for them.

The bathroom got really steamy & would spill into the room once the door was open, making it more sticky and muggy. A simple solution is to add an exhaust fan to the bathroom. The bathroom took forever to air out & the mirror to defog; an exhaust fan would help w/moisture & keep mold problems at bay. It would also be nice to not smell the toilet business in the bedroom.

The t.v. was small, & it wasn't until the last day there we figured out what channel had a list of all the shows. Having a list readily available for guests would be helpful. We had some ant problems even with keeping our food sealed tightly. Ant traps would be a good idea. Adding a little rug on each side of the bed to wipe your feet on would help in keeping sand out of the bed. As hard as you try to not drag it in, it still happens.

Most are simple fixes that go a long way in keeping guests happy. Hopefully future guests will have it better off than we did.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. We know how difficult it is to find a comfortable bed when you have a "bad back" and apologize that you found our bed hard. Another guest (also with a bad back) said the same bed was too soft! We provide very high quality beds that most guests find very comfortable; however, we're sorry for your discomfort. Re: A/C: when we built 6 years ago, we decided to go 100% solar, and to cool our rooms naturally, by design rather than a/c. The result: most guests are able to stay comfortable by taking a dip or "chilling out" in the shade with a cool drink. For folks who are very heat sensitive, we may not be the best choice for you. Re: ants: our Garden Suites are situated right in lush tropical gardens, so, although we have professional routine pest control, sometimes a few ants sneak in. Re: exhaust fan and tv guide: Good suggestions! We'll look into them. Aloha! HN

AHHH WHAT A RELAXING PLACE

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I wanted to visit the Island of Ohau and see Pearl Harbor but didn't want to stay in the high rises of Honolulu, and we found the perfect place at Hale Nalo. It is small but perfect for two people, and the back yard is amazing. We woke to the sound of birds every morning, and looked out into the lush tropical yard.
Although the room is small, you have everything you need. It has a portable stove top, microwave, and BBQ, the only thing you can't do is bake...but who wants to in Hawaii right???
It is 10 minutes drive to the decent size city of Kilue with penty of shops and eateries, but one of the best places for lunch, Dinners and a smoothy is right down the street.
The beach is a short walk at the end of the street, and there was almost no one on it over the 4 mile stretch of soft sand beach. The waves are calm and great for swimming, and it is not windy all the time like at the North shore, and not crouded like Wakikii.
As an added bonus the inkeeper has a Dog name Sophie, we asked to play with her, and she is super sweet.
