'Romantic Retreat With A Fireplace & Indoor Sauna': Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy a steam in the private indoor cedar sauna. The master bedroom welcomes you with a Serta 'Perfect Sleeper' Eastern King sized bed with an adjacent master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second guest bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed. Fall asleep to the crickets singing and the soothing sound of the stream running over the rocks. It is also one of the few houses on the Hilo side of the island that does not have a metal roof (less than 1%). Metal roof you say? If you have stayed on the Hilo side before and found yourself wide awake in the middle of the night to the clatter of rain on a metal roof, then this is the house for you. It has a quiet conventional shingle roof.
'Two Ponds And A Weeping Wall': The master bedroom has a large Koi Pond just outside the window and the koi will be stirring and waiting for you when you wake up and give them a treat. Both bedrooms look out onto a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property. A second large pond (79,000 gallons) with talapia and huge 30 year old koi, is just outside the front door. There is also an outdoor shower for those who like to enjoy nature at its best.
Just outside your living room windows, across the pond there is a weeping wall, constantly running water down its rough lava face. These places are often called 'Pele's Tears'. It is said of 'weeping walls' that 'Pele' the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who created the 'aina' is weeping for her children (the islands). We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk (Pronounced...'Io). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crawdads out of the stream. Watch her from your table as she perches on the large boulders and enjoys her breakfast.
'Become One With The Aina (the land)': This lovely 2+ acre property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own little secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one way in and out. The bordering sides of the property are steep valley walls. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate 'get away from it all' experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. We are NOT off the grid. This house has County of Hawaii Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar, generators or catchment water as most rain forest properties are.
This property is located 15 miles North of Downtown Hilo and easily access by all paved Hwy. and roads. A short 3 miles back down Hwy. 19 to Kolekole Beach Park will give you the opportunity to swim in a huge waterfall that drops into a stream. This waterfall is located in a City & County Park and admission is free. It is rarely found by tourists and is easily accessed by car with a nice paved road (no hiking required) it even has a rope swing. *Always use caution in any stream or waterfall.
We retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with multiple animal and children charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.
Linda Martin purchased this house in 2008
Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it.
Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin
We want to thank you again for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home while we visited the Big Island. No matter how amazing the sights of our day were, we always found our surroundings when we got home breathtaking! Pictures simply cannot do its beauty justice. We could not have imagined a more perfect place. The notes and instructions left around the house were also very helpful and thoughtful, and really showed the pride and care you have in your property. We will be recommending you to all of our friends!
We stayed at Heaven's door for 8 nights and I can't tell you how perfect this place was. We've stayed in ocean front condos before but this was a completely different type of "treat." The home was immaculate and welcoming. It's in a great location for hitting all the spots on the Big Island. It was always our goal to get back around 4 in the afternoon so we could still sit and enjoy the privacy of this property. The grounds are just beautiful and feeding the Koi fish was a huge highlight of mine everyday! They would swim over as soon as we pulled into the driveway. I loved it! It's an absolutely incredible property an an absolutely incredible price! Thank you so much, Linda, for sharing your beautiful property with us. We have lasting memories!
We stayed at Heaven's Door for two weeks from the last week of Sept. to the first week of Oct. The rainforest setting was stunning and the house was perfect. It was exceptionally well kept and well appointed. We used it as a base to explore the whole island and found the location perfect for our needs. Nowhere was too far away and the seclusion allowed us to unwind without typical hotel stresses. On those days when we just chose to "hang out" the diverse rainforest activity kept us busy watching and photographing the plants and a variety of wildlife from black-crested night herons to a multitude of colorful birds. The friendly fish and feral cats quickly became a part of our routine and members of the family. Watching the geckos after sunset was an endless source of amusement.
Linda was an absolute charm to deal with. Friendly and abundantly helpful, she handled booking and payment swiftly and completely, including a personal call when we made our initial inquiry. Clear directions and comprehensive instructions around the property eliminated any stress with being in a strange place. The library included the latest tour books which became ready references making daily outings easy and fun. We also met Lindsay, the caretaker, who gave us a friendly Ninole greeting and made sure we were comfortable.
We have done other VRBOs and this one stands out as the best in our experience. Many thanks Linda and Ken.
We spent 5 nights of our honeymoon here and I wish we had spent more.
I miss the soft lullaby of frogs each night giving us the best sleep we had ever had. I miss laughing at the fish as they follow you around the pond asking for food. I miss our pancake breakfasts with coffee whilst admiring the garden. I miss the lazy evening we had watching 4 films from the great DVD selection.
This was a wonderful place to stay on Big Island in your own corner of the rainforest. We did some exploring around the local area as well as enjoying a long drive across the island stopping off at some wonderful towns.
Thank you Linda for being such a fantastic host. x
What can I say about Heaven's Door!! It honestly was one the absolute highlights of our entire three week, three Island honeymoon! You could easily spend the time on the grounds and not go anywhere and still feel so connected to the true 'Hawaii'. We were overly impressed in every manner. We arrived on Saturday, August 16th and stayed for 4 days... we were so disappointed we couldn't stay longer. Considering we arrived a week after Hurricane Iselle hit we couldn't believe that not even one leaf seemed out of place, the place was pristine! Some of our favourite things (although hard to pinpoint) were: the large coy pond in the front yard, the coy pond on the side yard (in which you can feed the coy every morning from the master bedroom window), the stream running around the entire property, the sauna, the sounds of the rainforest (frogs, birds, waterfalls), the intricate details and thoughtfulness that went into everything throughout the house (everything you can think of is provided), and by far the absolute best - the private rainforest atmosphere! It truly is an experience to be had! Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo to Linda, Ken and Lindsay for making this a truly memorable experience! Heaven's Door could not be a more accurate name for this accommodation (or should I say - experience)!
This beautiful rainforest palace is simply AH-MAZING! This property is simply breathtaking with all of the waterfalls, streams, koi pond and rainforest views from every room. Seriously, the pictures do it no justice. The property was very clean and accommodated us with everything that we could possibly need and more. Linda was great to work with and very helpful in providing suggestions, etc. We weren't sure how the rainforest was going to feel without AC in May, but we were actually quite comfortable. It got a little humid during the day, but we were gone most of the time exploring anyway and it got down into the 60s at night and felt incredible. My husband and I travelled alongside two of our best friends and constantly joked around with one another about how we expected to see an actual dinosaur at any moment, because of the location 'feeling' so remote. Of course, in reality we were a short 20 minute drive to downtown Hilo and greeted by adorable feral cats, frogs, birds and geckos. (My friend said she saw a couple of wild pigs from the deck, but they didn't bother anyone.) Oh, and for some the coqui frogs may be a little too much at night. Not us, they lulled all of right to sleep! In fact, when we returned to the mainland I downloaded a sound scape app on my phone with rainforest sounds to whisk me off to sleep. Anyway, I can't say enough about this amazing property! We would most definitely stay here again. Mahalo Linda (& Ken) for allowing us to stay in your lovely home:)
The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls (3 min.), Kolekole (5 min.), Akaka Falls (15 min.), Rainbow Falls (20 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay (10 min.) yet only 20 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town. Pick up local fresh fruits and vegetables at the wonderful Hilo farmers market or take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) at her best. Hike out to where 'aina' is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean. *See the photo of this great waterfall.
