Overview

Sonoma House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms, 5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Be sure to click the video links below to see more pictures and get a better understanding of the layout. This one of a kind stone lodge is located in a secluded location at the very heart of the Sonoma Valley, all 5 bedrooms are large and have a private, ensuite bath. We have a caretaker who lives just down the lane, so unlike most VRBO rentals, you can be assured of superior oversight and assistance. We now have access to a rural event facility or can help you locate a back roads venue of choice. If you want to check dates and respective pricing you can do this very accurately on the upper right of this web page in the reservation box. Just enter the in / out dates and click detailed pricing. The quote will be correct; we keep the online info up to date.

Overview: The house is 4000 square feet including 4 bedrooms/4 bathrooms in the main house and 1/1 in the nearby guest cottage with its own full kitchen. All 5 bedrooms are uniquely appointed and have private baths. There are 2 stone fireplaces, professional kitchen, turn of the century wine bar, chemical free lap pool, waterfall, 8 person spa/hot tub, stone fire-pit with extensive outdoor lounging and dining areas, bocce ball court and dedicated media room. It is situated just off the very center of the Sonoma Valley floor, at the mouth of a granite canyon which becomes Sugar Loaf State Park. The locally quarried stone walls of the first floor are over 1' thick, providing luxurious natural air conditioning. The outdoor splendor merges with the indoors as all the front-facing first floor windows bifold back to open completely. Secluded and picturesque, there are endless views to the forested peaks of the nearby state park while just minutes from the best wineries. Rustic, country French antiques abound with an easy 'feet up' level of comfort and ease throughout.

Check-in is guaranteed by 4:00 p.m. and checkout is at 11:00 a.m. We do our very best to accommodate early check-ins and late check-outs, but cannot make any guarantees until one week prior to arrival in case the house is occupied on your arrival or departure date.

Idyllic in the summer, the house is uniquely fabulous in the winter, spring and fall. Rainy, cool days are a delight with friends or family gathering around the massive fireplace and cooking in the vast professional kitchen with its 2 islands, 2 dishwashers and room for 3 to cook simultaneously at the professional Viking range. An adjacent 14 foot wine bar affords temperature controlled refrigeration for optimal wine tasting. When temperatures drop, there is radiant heat (under the limestone flooring) so one is more than comfortable in the high-ceiling, main floor spaces. When the rainy season starts, the nearby creek fills significantly and rushes by to the valley floor. It can sound like Niagara Falls is across the way; truly delightful. There is a bocce court in the side yard and a separate theater room with 70' led screen with surround sound system. The pool is a chemical free lap pool, 12’ wide by 50’ long. The antique euopean sheets will be line dried in the fresh country air (weather permitting), hand ironed and waiting for you to sleep ever-so deeply in.

There is nothing to compare to gathering in front of a big fire. Often even summer nights are cool enough to allow for a blaze. There are 2 stone fireplaces on the first floor. The living room fireplace is right out of the days of yore when stone lodges had oversized fireplaces as the center of the household. One of the first floor king bedrooms has its own stone fireplace. A unique feature is the outdoor fire-pit (can also be used for cooking) under 150 foot tall fir trees with adjacent propane or charcoal grills - a fabulous place to encircle your group around a roaring fire, share stories and tell tales. There is firewood on the premises and all the fires will be stacked, ready for your match to set them alight. You can retain our caretaker to rebuild the fires for you daily if desired.

Culinary options galore: We are so fortunate that the renowned chef John Ash and his right hand, Mei Ibach, are managing the culinary program. John Ash is often referred to as the “Father of Wine Country Cuisine”. His namesake restaurant, John Ash & Company, was the firsts culinary marvel of its type when it opened its doors in 1980. Today he is an acclaimed author and much sought after teacher, and consultant. If desired, Mei can add her unique Thai and Indonesian background to her wine country flavors - mingling exotic Malay and Chinese spices. Let Mei or John create the menu of your dreams; whether you want a big outdoor barbecue with a selection from John’s newest cook book, or a 6 course sit down extravaganza with the most exquisite wine pairings the county has to offer. Team building cooking events are very popular group activity to consider.

We can make arrangements/recommendations for any of the following: (concierge fee may apply)

Private chef for a luxury en situ experience or any and all catering

Event planning

Wine tastings, pairings, private tours

Delivery of fresh local produce from our friends who run an organic farm

About blair spangler

I am interior designer trained in both the US and France. In 1999 I totally gutted and rebuilt this solid stone house, making sure it retained all the beauty of the original structure but including the comforts of a brand new home. Because my background is specifically in hospitality design, I think you will find that I have done well to anticipate the guests' needs as they come to the house for profound rest and relaxation as well as to partake of the wonders of the Valley of The Moon.

blair spangler purchased this house in 1998

Why blair spangler chose Sonoma

This location is in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, also known as the Valley of the Moon; to me the most beautiful part of the Sonoma Valley. The coastal indigenous tribes of the area, Miwok, Pomo and Wintun peoples, referred to the "Valley of the Moon" in their legends. The phrase "Valley of the Moon" was first recorded in an 1850 report by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo to the California Legislature. According to Jack London, who had a ranch here, the Native American word Sonoma means "valley of the moon." He used it for his book of the same name. But there are several other possible translations for Sonoma (see Sonoma County, California). According to the Miwok tribes that lived in the valley, and the Pomo, it meant "valley of the moon" or "many moons". White settlers may have accidentally translated the words "many moons" into "valley of moons". Miwok legends say that the moon seemingly rose from this valley, or was "nestled" in the valley, or may have even sprung up multiple times in one night! The house construction was started in about 1949 by a crazy naturalist who continuously added on to the property for the next 10 years or so. They did a lot of hunting in the valley up till the 1960's. There is a cement block shed behind the house that was a walk in cooler where they hung the deer and mountain lion carcasses. We still have some mountain lion in the area - but they stay up in the park, never any problem. If they find any bear they trap them and take them up to Lake County. What is now the guest cottage was actually built to house raccoons - luckily they had long departed when I took possession in 1998. The original owner had also started a tunnel under the little Adobe Canyon Rd so all the animals (who he sometimes hunted!) could cross to get water in the creek. This is rather an indication of his eccentricity as even today there is not any traffic to speak of on this road for it has no outlet beyond the state park.

What makes this house unique

This lot is located in a canyon, the only such geographical particulars of its type in Sonoma. The Canyon provides cool and shade in the relative extreme heat of the Sonoma summers. Everything is green and cool in the shelter of Adobe Canyon in the summer and fall while the Valley is burnt and arid, grass-less hills and dusty heat. Views are spectacular to the state park that surrounds this rural location. It is so dark at night you can't see to walk without the moon and the stars are huge and ever-so bright. I gutted the entire house in 1999. The trusses and wood ceiling in the great room were put in at that time as were the hand-cut pillowed limestone floors and the pool. We convinced the owners to allow us into a local stone quarry which had long been closed - to retrieve enough of the same stone to execute the pool terrace and decks. This one of a kind structure affords a truly memorable gathering place for friends and family.

Our 60th Birthday celebration with five couples was a huge success at the Kenwood Lodge!

  • 5 of 5

We found the lodge to exceed all of our expectations. The photos on the listing were accurate. The quality and ambience of the indoor living space as well as the numerous outdoor gathering spaces were fabulous! The property was very clean and well-maintained and the owners were very helpful in assisting us in every way. The highlight of our trip was our Saturday evening at the Lodge with a private chef and his staff for our birthday celebration. The huge kitchen, bar area and dining/living room were perfect for our party. We also enjoyed exploring Sonoma and Napa Valley's many wineries and had an excellent driver from Napa Valley Custom Tours to assist us. Mustards Grill never disappoints! Hiking in the Sugarloaf Ridge State Park was right down the road. We also enjoyed the Kunde mountaintop wine tasting as well. Thank you Blair and Nicole!

Husband's 60th birthday celebration

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in Sonoma. We had 5 couples who spread out when it was time to go to bed, but found the gathering areas great for our large group. The only thing lacking was the air conditioning, it was not as cool as we like at night for sleeping. So I think fans in each bedroom closet would be a nice addition for extra cooling needs. Outside area nice for sitting around by the fire pit and talking about the day's adventures. I would rent this house again. Thanks for the memories.

Owner's Response: One of the idyllic features of this stone house is that it is naturally air-conditioned. This is impossible to document clearly on the VRBO site, but this following text that I am posting here is published to all guests in the package we send with the agreement to execute in their booking process. This condition of the Lodge is made most clear. Because this house has so much solid stone, it stays remarkably cool in the summer. In fact so cool that you you often find yourself opening the windows during the summer months actually to let the heat in. Nights are always cool, in the 50's to low 60’s, which contributes to the cooling of the stone structure, even though summer days can get into the high 90’s. All the front facing windows on the first floor bi-fold open completely. It is wonderful to have a cool summer house in the wine country and be able to have windows open to the great outdoors vs. having to keep everything closed up for AC, as is the case everywhere else in the Wine Country. We do have big fans in the upstairs bedrooms - which is the only area that ever gets really warm - and extras in a downstairs closet. I am so sorry this guest was not absolutely and completely comfortable. Normally the cooler nights in the Sonoma Valley make for excellent sleeping conditions. This house is truly cool at night, but it is not that sort of refrigerated feel of AC if one prefers that experience. As a reminder: if you are in need of assistance or dissatisfied while staying at the Ranch, please contact us so we may remedy the situation post haste. I have been renting this house since 2001 and to the best of my knowledge this is the first complaint we have ever had about the temperatures in the house. The proof of that is in the 30 plus reviews before this one. There is not one complaint about the AC - to the contrary. Thank you.

Mom's Birthday Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our Mom was turning 79 and the siblings decided to do something special. We all had different ideas but our themes were consistent: nature, family time and good food and drinks. We decided on the Wine Country Stone Lodge. We had a wonderful two full days together. The great room and kitchen is awesome for gathering and cooking. The yard and pool area are lovely. It finally rained in California and we enjoyed the large fireplace. In the living room we set up a 1000 piece jigzaw puzzle on the large rustic coffee table. The dining room was perfect for gourmet dinners and good games of Rook. The kitchen is a wonderful gathering place if you are a family of cooks, which we are. Lots of room to work and visit. There is also a great BBQ outside. While BBQing prime rib, we enjoyed the firepit! We did venture out, though briefly, for some wine tasting, hikes and of course, a trip to Whole Foods in Sonoma. If you are looking for a spacious but intimate place to gather with friends or family, this is the place. Ray the caretaker is the best. Oh, and my Mom said "this was my best birthday ever" and she was sincere. This was our first time using VRBO and it won't be our last!

perfect house for a perfect weekend away with friends

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely incredible weekend away in Sonoma thanks to this awesome lodge. We were a group of ~30 year old friends -- some of us spent the days cycling the roads between Sonoma and Napa, some went wine tasting, and some hung out around the house. Whatever folks were looking for, the place was perfect. It was a beautiful spot tucked away from the busier parts of Sonoma and Napa. The caretaker and housekeeper were great -- we got a good tour of the place and everything was ready to go (and they waited late until we arrived -- traffic was terrible getting out of SF). The pre-made fires were a very nice touch.

I can't think of anything that would have made our stay more comfortable. We cooked large meals together for every meal, and found the kitchen to be quite well equipped. Everything we needed was there and we loved the two dishwashers.

A+ all around.

weekend stay

  • 5 of 5

we had a extended family gathering to celebrate a major birthday. the house was perfect for two married couples with their two children each, who each stayed on one floor of the mainhouse. the grandparents wisely stayed in the guest house where we could sleep late.

with a very large great room and a separate media room, the house provided maximum utilization for many adult and children activities. the property is well designed with pool, hot tub, bocce ball court, lawn for children games, terraces for relaxing, firepit for marshmellow roasting, etc.

the property was very clean with extremely responsive caretaker and housekeeping staff.

major hiking and wine tasting was one to two miles away.

we had a wonderful time and would do it again.

Fabulous Home!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled to Sonoma for a long weekend of wine tasting with 4 other couples, and could not have been more happy with this home. It was well-furnished and maintained, and the outdoor spaces were wonderful! There were many benefits that you would have found in a hotel, like soap and shampoo/conditioner, hairdryers in every bathroom, etc., but you had the comfort of staying in a private home with your own pool, hot-tub and kitchen! The owner was very helpful in providing numerous resources for wine-tastings, restaurants and driver services. I highly recommend this home for a relaxing get-away! Also recommend Kunde vineyards Mountain Top Tasting, which is right around the corner, and Imagery Winery which is just a little further down the Sonoma Highway. Thanks to the owner for opening up this beautiful home to us!
