Not worth the hassle

Where to begin? I prob. should have suspected something when the owner became impossible to reach after I mailed the check for payment even though prior to that, he always got back in touch with me. After I got there, I had to call on my cell, because neither the internet nor the phone worked at all. He had me call the cable company to try to fix it (on my vacation!) which never happened. He said he had wi-fi which is one reason I chose this place; it never worked AT ALL. No connection whatsoever. He bought the equipment but didn't make sure it worked properly. The other huge pain is that the bikes are so rusted they were unrideable. We didn't bring our own bikes because we thought we would be able to use the ones listed in the "amenities" section. Other frustrations: the neighbor in the other half of the duplex began HAMMERING and doing construction around 8 AM on Sat. morning (our last morning there) and continued for an hour or so until I finally asked him to stop. The ceiling fan in the master bedroom was broken and so was the tub in the master bathroom. Shower worked but no luck if you wanted to relax in a bath... other bathroom doesn't have one. Also, the sliding glass doors don't really slide... you have to throw your body into it and then they screech. Lower deck in back has mold/mildew. And some of the dishes were chipped (not a pleasant surprise when you reach for a plate and get cut) and dirty in the cupboards. I told the owner about all of these things, but with excuses of his own, he renounced any responsibility to provide even a partial refund.
p.s.-- Main living floor is one story up and the flight of stairs to the front door is steep. This wasn't a problem for us but I just think there should be a photo. There's no way those were 'luxury' linens, and there aren't enough bath towels (we brought our own beach towels).
Highlights: sunset over marsh from deck in back; pets allowed; hardwood floors; proximity to beach (can't see it from house though)
Owner's Response: WOW! This is one unhappy person.
First I would like to say I pride myself in providing a clean and safe family environment.
I am never impossible to reach. Erica mailed a check on May 17th for a May 20 check-in. I gave her a discounted rate because she was to be alone for 3 nights. Then she sneaks in a large dog and her boyfriend.
Erica fails to say that I drove 2 hours to loan her my laptop because she could not get hers to connect. I found there was a problem and arranged for emergency service. Erica canceled the appointment. I did plug the phone back in and it tested fine. Either she or her dog had it unplugged. The tech came after her departure and fixed the connection problem.
Yes, the bikes have rust. They are "beach cruisers" and are subjected to a salty environment. One bike had sticking pedals, the other 3 were fine.
The neighbor was at Lowes when they opened at 8 am and then went to breakfast. Knowing Lowes is 30 minutes away I beleive his story that he started a minor repair at 9:45 am and stopped when she attached him. Her check-out was to be at 10 am which she extended to noon without permission.
All of the maintenance issues have been addressed. The tub was fine. The shower diverter was on.
There were 7 bath towels left out for 1 person over 3 nights. They stained sheets beyond use, which appeared to be intentional.
I did not think Erica was entitled to a refund. A bad review is her only attack.
Steve
