Beaches and Ponds:
The house is located steps away from cape cod bay. The bay is a fun place for kids to play and explore. It is very safe for younger kids at low tide - and is a great place to explore and walk for as long as you could possible want. The water is always much warmer than the ocean. The beach goes for endless miles in each direction. If you want a change of scenery you can head about 2 miles to the other side of the cape where you can enjoy the spectacular Cape Cod National Sea Shore. The beaches there are some of the most spectacular in the world. There are numerous programs run by the National Park Service - from hiking to kayaking to reenactments of shipwreck rescues. The visitors center is located in Eastham and has movies and a museum.
If you want a break from salt water - both Eastham has a few great fresh water ponds which are great for kids and adults. The water is terrific and Wiley Pond has a playground for kids as a change of pace.
Biking, Hiking, and other activites.:
Cape cod is full of things to do - if you don't want to just 'relax'. There are several bike baths - one which is just a mile from the house. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs twenty two miles from Wellfleet to Dennis, and has spurs off it to other towns, such as Chatham. The trail was just repaved last year. You can also walk the path - or Rollerblade if you prefer! You can also bike along the many scenic roads in the area - flat or hilly as you choose.
You can get a list of the other pick paths (such as the one through the dunes in Province town) at any bike shop.
The National Seashore - which runs from Eastham to Provincetown, has many hiking trails and/or tours. Pick up the weekly listing of events at the visitors center. Massachusetts Audubon in Wellfleet has great hikes and birds to see.
There are also whale watches, seal cruises, water parks, natural history museums, batting cages and as much miniature golf as you could want.
Eating out:
Eastham is beyond the crowds of the cape, but still has plenty to do, including eating. There are many seafood restaurants in the area, or a great place to get lobsters for your cook out. Right in town there are several specialty shops in case you prefer to eat at home - and there are two large grocery stores in Orleans just 10 minutes away.
If you want to eat with a view of the water - head over to nearby Wellfleet and eat at one of the places with a view of the bay.
If you really want a treat - take a night to drive to Provincetown where one restaurant is better than the next - we can give you some good recommendations. 'P-Town' is also a nice place to walk around and enjoy the ambiance and sites. You can also get some great breakfast there too!
