I am a travel writer who has selected my favorite flats in a few cities around the world. Living in a flat is my favorite way to feel like I am part of a place when I am visiting. This flat - Cihangir Two - is one of my favorites. It is spacious, and located in a lovely neighborhood and has knock your socks off views!
We have just renovated it, opening up the kitchen to views and repainting, refinishing the floors and more.
View the ships on the Bosphorus and the magical mosque-studded skyline of Sultanahmet from this 3 bdrm flat, dine & relax on balcony overlooking all or enjoy the views from the living room, and dining room.
There are 3 bdrms, and 1 large renovated bath with Turkish tiles (bathroom configuration is 2 rooms with toilet & lavatory in 1 room, bath/shower & lavatory in another room), new tile in kitchen and hall floor, sunny and spacious, shiny parquet wood floors, amazing neighborhood...Our Cihangir #2 flat is your perfect 'home away from home.'
The bohemian neighborhood of Cihangir is lovingly written about by Irhan Pamuk in 'Istanbul' and was recently voted One of the Best Places to Live by the Guardian.
Located just minutes from all the major sites. Populated by artists, intellectuals, film industry people, and foreigners. Cobblestone streets, wonderful turn of the century architecture, sidewalk cafes... Often compared to Montmarte in Paris or Soho in NYC.
Enjoy a birds' eye view of the tourist zone from your private balcony as opposed to living in the middle of the it. Get the feel of real Istanbul while being close enough to all the major sites to go there when you want to.
Enjoy the sidewalk cafes and boutiques of Cihangir, a 10 min walk to Taksim Square and Istiklal with 950+ restaurants and clubs, and just up the hill from the tram that will whisk you to the Old City.
From your private balcony, sip a glass of wine while watching ships and ferries traverse the famous and historic Golden Horn while across the water the view of mosque-studded Sultanahmet with Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia, will simply blow you away.
It's a view that few hotel rooms have and you'll have your own private flat in Istanbul's best neighborhood.
Beds: In each flat - Two queen sized beds and 2 twin beds (which can be moved together to create one king size bed if you wish). The third bedroom - our Sultan's Nook - is a curtained off alcove with a beautiful view of the Bosphorus.
Fully equipped kitchen. Separate rooms for the toilet and bathtub/shower. It is on the first floor (1 flight stairs up) in a quiet neighborhood.
I am a travel writer who has lived in and traveled to over 2 dozen countries. I always stay in flats and have chosen some of my favorite places on the planet in which to provide apartments to rent to other global travelers. It's the only way to travel as it takes you out of the tourist observer mode and puts you squarely into the the 'real' spirit of Place. All my flats have:
1. location just outside the tourist zone so that you might get to 'live' in the area however briefly as opposed to being hounded like a tourist. Close enough to the sites and public transportation to get to the 'tourist zone' easily,
2. beautiful views that leave no doubt where you are,
3. A minimum of 2 bedrooms in each flat
Robin Sparks purchased this apartment in 2008
Istanbul is my favorite city in the world and Cihangir is my favorite neighborhood.
Istanbul is colorful, vibrant, layered with history and filled with the melodious sound of Middle Eastern music and dance, and the call to prayer. It has some of the world's most delicious food, and best of all is the Turks themselves - the most hospitable people on the planet. If you stay in a hotel in this city, you might not ever learn this fact, which is why I rent this flat in the charming, central neighborhood of Cihangir. Once you've 'lived' in Istanbul, however briefly, you will love Turks! The neighborhood of Cihangir was recently voted best place to live by the Guardian. (UK) And these two flats are together, allowing large groups to stay together.
Two flats together for large families and groups. Rent separately or together. I love the light that streams into these flats each morning and the views from the salons, dining rooms, and private balconies are amazing. Like being in a resort on a bay - but then you turn to the right and see the mosque studded skyline of Sultanahmet and you remember that you are in Istanbul - the most magical city in the world. This neighborhood is the perfect combination of foreign and locals and is loaded with fabulous restaurants and is close to public transportation and access to the Bosphorus. It is the perfect area to escape the over-stimulation of Sultanahmet and relax in the artists and intellectuals favorite neighborhood, while close enough to be at the major sites within minutes when you want to be. Or simply sit back, pour a glass of wine and enjoy the ships passing by on the Bosphorus and a view of the Old City of Sultanahmet from your balcony. You may never want to leave!
(This review is for our new Cihangir Three flat located on the floor above the flat advertised here. They are the same layout and have similar decor. I am putting the review here until we get photos for this new flat up on this site.)
Our stay in Istanbul and the new Cihangir 3 flat, located above this flat, was a wonderful experience, clean, modern with everything we needed. From the time we arrived at the airport with your assistance in arranging the transportation to the warm welcome from Elis at the flat then arranging our departure transportation it was stress free for us and definetly the what I would recommend to anyone traveling there, Elis was always available to help us if we needed anything.
We really enjoyed the beautiful views and location of the flat (even with all the hills), it was easy access, centralized and in a seemingly safe area. We walked just about everywhere......Taksim area, Galata Tower area, Sultanahmet area (Mosque's & Castle) even over to the Kabatas port to take a ferry to Princess Island.
The flat was large with plenty of room for the 3 of us plus maybe a couple of more if you needed. The only thing that I may add as a suggestion is to supply a tea kettle to serve more than 1 cup.
To all visitors, make sure you have the most comfortable shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking. Taxi cabs and train are available however with the close proximity of all the areas to see and with the traffic the best choice was to walk.
Thank you and your staff for your warm hospitality.
Excellent place to stay. All 5 Star reviews are accurate.
All I can add is not to rent a car. We made the mistake of renting a car which stayed parked for 3 days.
Thank you Robin and the gentlemen who helped us get in very late at night.
I am particularly tired of reviews that tell the ratings and do not give the elements on which the judgment is based. This apartment was great because of the following reasons:
-We had some problems in the airport with our luggage. So we called by phone to inform about our lateness and they were supporting and told us not to worry besides, we were 1.5 hours late.
-Davide was waiting at the apartment, explained everything and was very nice and polite.
-The views are just breath taking. The Apartment was big enough for the 3 of us.
-Everything worked perfectly: Heat, warm water, internet, cable, etc.
-Towels were provided – more than enough.
-The Toilet is separated from the Tub, so we didn’t have to wait for the other to finish using it
-Clean and very lighted.
-It is a 10 minute walk to Taskim Square, but is an Up the hill walk.
-Safe neighborhood, relatively close to everything.
-No handicap accessible at all. (the whole city isn’t)
-If you are planning to take public transport from / to the airport, make sure you have a very light luggage, it is close by, but it is an up the hill walk from Tophane.
-The store close to the apartment does not carry many of the vital elements, so stop by the Carrefour Store on the way from Taskim.
-Taxis were not able to find the street easily, so tell them that you are going to the Cihangir Cami (Cihangir Mosque) and they all know.
I am very happy I stayed there, and I am looking forward to do the same if I come back to Istanbul.
A truly excellent spot to be with a stunning view over the Bosphoros and a very comfortable apartment away from the traffic but close to the very efficient traffic systems. We know the area well having lived here for a couple of years a while ago and we would choose this over any other location. It's ideally situated between the sights and the street culture without being overrun by either. There are so many really good places to eat or sit about within 5 minutes walk. The apartment is well described and the rooms were clean, comfortable and pleasant though a group of 8 people would find it cramped. The owner and manager were very helpful and friendly and our arrangements were very smoothly sorted out. I would certainly recommend it.
This was a really ideal place to stay for our last visit to Istanbul. We know the city and the Cihangir area reasonably well and this location gives probably the best view, encompassing the endlessly fascinating Bosphorous and both the old and the Asian sides across the water in either direction. The apartment is also away from the traffic whilst only being a short way up the hill from the very efficient tram service. It is perfectly placed between the admirable cultural sites and the street life of the surrounding area. There are more excellent cafes within 5-10 minutes than you can count.
The apartment was clean and well-prepared and everything worked fine though the instructions for how to work the TV system needed elaboration. The rooms are comfortable, not cramped and with good storage space. The bathroom is very nice although note that the hot and cold water taps are wrongly marked if the very courteous manager forgets to tell you.
The customer service was excellent; our airport transfers ran very smoothly and we were very generously dealt with in view of our very late departure time.
I would certainly recommend this place.
We are a family of 2 adults and 2 teens. When we initially booked our trip to Istanbul, it was clear that the best rentals were with Robin. However, there wasn't a long enough stretch at one appt to accomodate our total stay, so we opted to divide our time between two different appts. Our family first stayed in Robin's Firuzaga appt (right next to a small neighborhood mosque). When moving day came, her sweet and ever helpful manager Elif came and walked us to the Cihangir appt. Not a far walk and easy to do with our small carry on bags (thankfully we've learned to travel light!) The new appt was as advertised and of course, the highlight is the VIEW: magnificent! Spent many an hour in the day and eve, just watching the ships go by,the moon rise, etc. As for the appt, all was fine. Appreciated having a kitchen and washing machine! The only real trouble we had was with mosquitoes and they were pretty bad (we've noticed that windows don't have screens here.) Was too hot during our June visit to have windows closed and the small AC in the living room wasn't able to cool the whole place. Maybe hang bed nets? We totally enjoyed living in a neighborhood rather than simply staying in a hotel. Public transportation was close (and we used it all the time), however, it is a stiff walk (steep hills) back up to the appt at the end of the day. Again, we are all of an age to be able to hike up hill, but might not be suitable for older (or very young) guests. Robin, Elif and Davide (her staff) were awesome, as they all did everything possible to make our stay comfortable and pleasant. We have travelled far and wide across this city (to the ancient sites in Sultanehmet via tram, across to Kadakoy and Uskadar in Asia via passenger ferry, to historic Balat & Fener neighborhoods via city bus). This is an amazing place and I think we really got a better feel of it staying in these appts. We'd love to return!
This flat has a terrific view and a good layout, and is handy to shops and restaurants, as well as a quick walk to the train that runs down near the water. The views are terrific, and a ways out at water's edge, one can watch the cruise ships coming in and out. The layout is good; I wouldn't try to sleep more than 5-6 there however. Functional kitchen great for making breakfast and lunch especially. Only problem was mosquitos (August stay); I alerted the owner and they say they will do something about it.
Charming turn-of-the-century neighborhood with cafes, cobblestone streets, boutiques, traditional and international restaurants, 10 minute walk to Taksim Square and metro. Just up the hill from the tram which will take you to the old city in minutes. Close to taxi stand. Close to ferries and water taxis. Charming neighborhood favoured by Istanbul's creatives and foreigners living in Istanbul.
