My family (husband, 8-year old & 5-year old) and I loved our stay at Cottage Sankofa so much we really want to keep it a secret so that we won't have to chance it being booked before we can make our reservations again for next summer! Before we went there, I really thought that the reviews online were trumped up, but they weren't. The cottage was in the perfect location, it takes about 4 or 5 minutes from walking out of the water, across the beach and up to the house. The picture that shows the view from the property to the beach is right from the enclosed front porch (we thought you'd have to walk down a driveway to see that, but no - it's real!). The property is right off the "main drag" by the beach, but set off in a way that there is no noise (except for the beautiful sound of the waves.) The proximity to grocery stores (5-10 min) and other activities is perfect, too! There is a trolly that goes to all of the neat places around Muskegon if you don't want to drive.
Denise has set that house up so well for renters that we brought a lot of stuff that we did not need to - she already had it there! Sand toys, games, a cooler, and towels for the beach, and a fire pit out back and fire wood to roast marshmallows - oh and a great gas grill, too! There was even a massive storm that took out the electricity and Denise and her husband brought over a generator in case it was out for a long time so that we wouldn't lose our food in the refrigerator! They also offered to pay for us to go to a hotel and pay for dinner.....but we didn't want to leave and as it turns out, did not need to anyway because the electricity came back on.
The appliances are the same ones that we have in our house - so it was just like being at home (except better.) Denise also had all the condiments, oils, cooking and baking supplies, etc., so that if you bring that with you - you're making extra work for yourself. The house is beautifully decorated. Even had the pull-out couch to send the husband to when he snored!
All in all....this was the most relaxing week I've had since before I had the kids. I would like to add that we live within hours of the New Jersey beaches and could have gone there, but it was so comforting to not have to worry about undertow with the little ones that I would rather make the drive here than to go two hours to the ocean. Oh....and the sand at Pere Marquette beach is like sugar, so soft!
