Photos and Description of the West Tisbury vacation cottage rental
2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 6

For those who seek a quiet, private refuge on the water and quality time with spouse or family, this cottage is ideal. Located on Middlepoint Cove in West Tisbury across from Long Point Wildlife Refuge, the house has a gas stove, refrigerator and hot water heater, an outdoor shower and no electricity. It is a 5 minute walk to a beach on Tisbury Great Pond and a 20 minute walk or canoe paddle to the south shore and surf/pond swimming. Huckleberries abound and fishing, hiking and birding are available for those wishing to get away from the noise and stress of everyday life. Guests who've stayed here look 10 years younger after a week. A Farmer's Market and Artisans Festivals are a short drive to town. Music, restaurants, theaters, carousel, street fairs, auctions, art galleries and flea markets provide summer long entertainment in the six island towns. A wonderful retreat for those who love privacy and being by the water. Fri-Fri rental. $2000/week July and August. $1800/week in June and mid-September.

How to get there: Martha's Vineyard is an island in Massachusetts south of Cape Cod approximately 25 miles long and 17 miles wide. Ferries run every 2 hours in the summer from Woods Hole on the mainland to Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs. The ferry run is 3/4 hour by the Elizabeth islands through Vineyard Sound. You can fly, drive or take the bus from Boston, MA or Providence, RI. The drive takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Boston and 1 hour from Providence, depending on traffic. Cape Air flies to Martha's Vineyard from Boston and Providence. You can rent a car at the airport or on Martha's Vineyard. There is also a fast ferry from New Bedford, MA to Vineyard Haven for walk-on passengers.

Island Towns: Each town on Martha's Vineyard is unique. Oak Bluffs' gingerbread houses surround a tabernacle where community sings and concerts are held and illumination night when residents light lanterns on their porches making magic of the architecture and surroundings. Edgartown has a long whaling history with magnificent white clapboard houses with widows' walks where whaling captains' wives stood to look for their husbands' ships. Aquinnah is home to the Wampanoag Indian tribe and has a cultural center with historical documents, photos and artifacts. Vineyard Haven is the year-round island port with marinas and boat building operations. Up Island, the western half of the island, is where West Tisbury, Chilmark, Menemsha, and Aqinnah are located. These towns are smaller. The landscape is rural with sheep farms, moors and heathlands, sandplain grasslands, woods, ponds and beaches. Drives around the island have breathtaking views of land and seascapes.

About Martha Moore

The cottage was built in 1972 and has been a source of joy in the family ever since. People who rent it return because they want to get away from the stress of their daily lives. This is truly a refuge. If you like privacy, a pristine location and quality time with your family, this cottage is for you. Instead of watching TV, children fish, swim, play games and frisbee, pick huckleberries. My children grew up learning how to entertain themselves by inventing their own games and sports, boating, swimming, exploring, climbing trees, fishing, and crabbing.

Why Martha Moore chose West Tisbury

The property belonged to my grandfather, who bought Middlepoint in 1939 to duck hunt in the fall. After he died in 1956, his children inherited the 40 acres and divided the property up into lots, the smallest ones toward the end of the point. Now there are 7 houses, each with approximately 3 acres, so there''s plenty of privacy. The lots in the woods have larger acreage.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage affords peace, rest, family time without interruptions and distractions, and a wide variety of outfdoor activities. Many tenants have been coming for years and think of the cottages on the point as their own.

West Tisbury has the charm of a small New England town with a General store, Church, Gallery, Town Hall, Grange, Mill, and Library located at its center. Long Point Wildlife Refuge, Cedar Tree Neck, the Christiantown Indian Memorial, and Polly Hill Arboretum are popular places to visit in West Tisbury. Tisbury Great Pond, which borders the south shore, is a favorite spot for surf casters on the Atlantic side and shell fishermen in the pond. Kayaking and canoeing up numerous coves are great ways to discover the varied bird life on the Vineyard and sunfish sails abound on the great pond. A Farmer's Market and Artisans Fairs are scheduled weekly for those who enjoy locally grown food and arts and crafts. Bike paths circle the island; gingerbread houses and a carousel grace Oak Bluffs; whaling captains' houses overlook Edgartown Harbor; Menemsha is a fishing village and clay cliffs rise up from the sea at Aquinnah. Within 1 1/2 hours from Boston.
