Why we would never go back...

Our agreed upon check-in time was two hours late. The owners have a range from 3-5 in the contract. We had requested an early check in, which we were told would be fine. As we were driving up, our calls were ignored for 2 hours and when we finally talked to someone, we were told our check in would not be until 5pm. We would have been fine had that been agreed upon earlier. The poor communication was not appreciated and a bad start.
The boat was fitted with an old motor (because the regular one was getting "fixed") and it would not start consistently…then at all. Keep in mind you are on an island without water or food unless you bring it. We were prepared for this…but assumed we would have reliable transportation to and from the island....we did not and the owners new it.
When we arrived at the property it was not clean. "Apparently" the cleaning person did not show up after the previous renters. We had to clean the dirty dishes, sweep the floors (covered with dog hair from the last renters, as well as were the futons), change used sheets on the bed, and clean the toilet. There were no cleaning supplies or paper towels on the site. We wound up purchasing our own in order to clean. This was on top of the required a "high" deposit we had to pay to ensure we left the cabin clean upon our own departure.
After our first night and a rough start, we decided to make the best of things. But the next morning, the boat did not start. After two hours of messing with it, pulling the gas line off, readjusting the pull cord etc, (I am no mechanic and was on vacation) we got it going and headed back to the mainland to meet my parents to bring them over for dinner on the island. Just as we pushed off with my parents in the boat, the pull cord went slack with no tension to start the motor. So, we paddled back to the dock and went into town to eat. We called the owners and requested a ride back out to get our things and leave that same night…we had had enough. They sent friends of theirs who brought us out to get our things and we were on our way back home, leaving after 24 hours of our planned 4 night stay. You can probably argue that I could have known more about fixing a boat motor, but we should have been provided with a reliable boat, without question.
After our departure we had unacceptable communication from the owners and we wanted to share our story so hopefully you wouldn't have a similar experience.
