Islands Sands is oceanside on Maalaea Bay, and has been very popular with visitors over the years. Just some of the amenities that Island Sands offers are a location on a peaceful dead end street, a heated pool with gas BBQs and picnic tables, a beautiful garden setting, and reserved parking. Complementary doughnuts and coffee provided Friday morning in the pool area is a great way to meet locals and fellow visitors.
Our unit is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condominium with a beautiful ocean view. We have furnished our unit so we feel at home during our stays on Maui, and we are sure you will feel comfortable as well. Many of our guests return every year for their vacation. The condo comes fully furnished, including linen, bathroom towels, and beach towels. The fully-equipped kitchen contains a dishwasher, microwave, and washer/dryer. We have cooling ceiling fans throughout, and an air-conditioner, which we rarely use since the Hawaiian trade winds that come through Maalaea keep the temperature just right. Cable TV and DSL High-Speed Internet Access is available.
Our unit is on the ground floor. I mention this because some visitors think they get better views from higher floors. We love our view, and much prefer being able to enter the unit through the garden versus having to take elevators or stairs and a hallway every time we go to the pool or poolside barbeque, or every time we leave and return home.
Maalaea is considered by some to be one of Hawaii’s “Best Kept Secrets”. It’s central location between Lahaina and Wailea allows easy excursions to all parts of the island. The popular destination spots in Makena, Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua are all within a half hour drive of this small ocean front community. Walk 5 minutes one way from Island Sands to a 4-mile long beach and an extensive natural wetlands; the morning walks on this secluded beach are memorable. Walk 5 minutes the other way from Island Sands to Maalaea Village and Harbor. Maalaea Village has the wonderful Maui Ocean Center aquarium, shops, and restaurants. Maalaea Harbor is the center for boat trips that offer snorkeling, fishing, sunset cruises, dinner cruises, and whale watching. Or stay ‘home’ and, while having a cocktail on your lanai or barbequing oceanside next to the pool, watch the breaching humpback whales (November-April) or Hawaii’s talented surfers take on the challenging “Freight Train”. The sun rise over Haleakala is magical.
Maui has something to offer for everyone, and we are sure you will have a wonderful stay with us.
Randy is retired from the computer business, and Maria has been in fashion sales and teaching. Randy is a gringo who speaks only English, while Maria is Chilean and completely bilingual in English and Spanish. We own homes in beach communties of Santa Barbara, Maui, and Zapallar, Chile; we obviously like to follow the sun. We live to snorkel, bodysurf, and golf. Since 2003, we have been in travel mode, visiting such places in the USA as Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, New England and the Pacific Northwest, and going overseas to South America, Thailand, and Europe.
The Owner purchased this condo in 1996
Randy's mother has a condo in Maalaea at Island Sands, and we bought the next door unit. No better place to visit Mom than Maui.
Barbequing by the ocean, and, in season, watching the whales breach or the surfer's riding the 'freight train' wave while we do it. We love having a ground level condo, being able to go thru the garden to the pool or poolside barbeque rather than using stairs, elevator, or hallway. A central location on Maui, making travel to all other parts of the island easier, while being able to return to a quiet location on the island. We love Maalaea's natural cooling with the tradewinds rather than having to often use the air-conditioner if we were in Lahaina or Kihei
My husband and I spent a week here with another couple during February 2014 As this was our first trip to Maui, we wanted to pack in as much adventure into the week as we could. This condo is perfectly situated for such a trip. We were able to see most everything on the island that we wanted and loved that the central location allowed for a broad spectrum of dining opportunities.
The condo was plenty spacious for 4 adults. It was well-stocked with all the amenities necessary (and even a few that weren't - such as the snorkel equipment and boogies boards) to make you feel at home. We particularly liked being able to walk to the harbor for happy hour. The grills at the pool were also very convenient.
If we ever make our way to Maui again in the future, we would definitely consider staying here again.
We loved staying at Randy's condo. This is the second time for me and everything was perfect. Condo was clean and well supplied. Liked the idea of ground floor so we could walk onto the grassy area and to the pool just by opening our sliding glass door.
Randy is always accommodating and the price is right.
P. S. Just thought of this - wish there were twin beds instead of a double in one of the bedrooms.
Described well - no surprises. Clean, pretty spacious, good value for money. Windy - yes. Decent beach is a bit of a walk away. Dealings with the owner were well-handled. Some caution for those with younger children - there are a lot of retirees at the complex/pool area that appreciate quiet. We didn't have any conflict as such but we did have to keep our kids from being over-loud.
would rent it again.
My family absolutely love Randy and Maria's condo. We have rented it multiple times. Two of the things we love best about the unit is that it is on the ground floor and that it is on the water. It is nice to be able to walk out to the pool and barbeque area, to bring in grocery's after shopping. There is a nice grassy area out front which was perfect for my grandchildren children to play. It is well maintained, clean and has everything we needed in the condo, it feels very comfortable. We have stayed there with our friends, with our family. Last year there were 25 of us for a family wedding. We rented 8 units at Island Sands. Our condo was the home base. We cooked most of the meals in our unit and ate many there as well because it is a ground floor unit it seems larger because you have the area out front. We were able to have the wedding rehearsal right there on sight, along with the rehearsal dinner in the pool area. It was perfect.
Maalaea is our favorite place to stay on the island. It is centrally located to everything, airport, Lahaina, Kihei. It has nice restaurants within walking distant from your high end dinning to your causal BBQ. The thing I have grown to love most about Maalaea is the 6 miles of private beach at the end of the road starting at Haycraft Park going to Sugar Beach. I love getting up and walking it every morning. It is peaceful, breathtaking, serene. It makes me sad every time I have to leave it. I have been fortunate enough to be able to visit Maui for over 30 years. I have stayed all around the island and Maalaea has everything I am looking for and I love staying in Randy and Maria's condo!
This was our 4th trip to Maui. We have stayed at Kahana and Kaanapali previously. Kaanapali tends to be a very pricey area if you elect to stay in the Black Rock area. The accomodations at Randy and Maries' condo suited our needs just fine. My wife and I shared the condo with our son and daughter-in-law. We had a good time. The cost of this rental was a real bargain compared to other 2 bedroom waterfront condos on Maui.
A few points of interest:
It is very "breezy" in Maalaea. You can see the windmills on the mountain from the condo. These windmills apparently provide much of the electrical power for Maui. The wind was pretty much constant. This could be a negative or a positive for someone staying at the Island Sands Resort. The negative is that the wind can sometimes be annoying. The positive is that the breeze keeps things cooler. Lahaina (to the north) and Kihei (to the south) tend to be very dry, hot, and stifling at times.
There is no decent beach in front of the Island Sands. It is a very rocky area. There is however a public park at the end of the street (about a 5 minute walk). The beach there is reasonably nice and extends for miles. It seems to be a favorite of the locals. We saw many surfers. We enjoyed boogie boarding there. We didn't see anyone snorkeling.
Because of its central location, Maalaea is probably the best place for someone to stay who is interested in exploring and touring the island of Maui. It's 15 to 20 minutes from Kahului (depending on the traffic). Kahalui has Costco, Kmart, Walmart, and Safeway. It is also the jumping off point for the "highway" to Hana. The scenic Iao Valley is only 20 minutes away. It only takes 20 to 25 minutes to get to Lahaina; 15 to 20 minutes to Kihei.
We really enjoyed having a ground level condo. Randy and Maria's condo has a nice ocean view and is just steps from the swimming pool and barbeque area. The pool and grounds are well-maintained and feature lovely gardens and a large fish pool.
Randy was very prompt and easy to work with during our vacation preparations.
The condo, the location and the weather were all great. The owners did a great, quick job of getting the place ready for us after some flooding and mud damage only days before we got there. We were close to everything. A little cramped for space in the kitchen area, but adequate for 2 couples, and would recommend the site. .
