Gastronomy:
The joy of eating can be found in several area restaurants. The Crocker House, Le Domaine and Chippers are just a few of your more elegant restaurants all just a few miles from 'home' and reservations a must. Ruth and Wimpy's, Jasper, Jordan's, and a host of others including all your fast foods are within 5 to 10 miles. Of course you can eat in. There are several fresh vegetable stands right on Rt 1. Large grocery stores are in the town of Ellsworth. Don't forget Rooster Brothers. Here you can find fine wines, coffees, cheeses, breads plus a host of the specialty items. Upstairs they sell everything one needs in the kitchen. Bartlett Estate Winery is located in Gouldsboro, just north on Rt 1. August is Wild Blueberry month in Maine. Be sure to grab a quart or two and enjoy them right out of the container.
Interests and Attractions:
Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park plus the entire Down East areas of Maine are at your beckon call. Hike, swim, sail, sight seeing, Whale and seal watching, light houses, mountain climbing, fishing and shopping are just a few of the activities that are available within a short distance.
Schoodic Mountain and Schoodic Point are North on Rt 1. The mountain can be seen from our home. There you can hike a number of trails to the top and then on the way down stop and take a dip in Donnell Pond. The rugged coastline of Maine is a wonderful area to explore by foot or by car. Do you have a bike, bring it if possible. Flying in? No problem you can rent one if you enjoy this sport. Sneakers, hiking boots and water shoes are a must. A can of bug spray is probably a good idea as well if you like the outdoors. Outdoor classical music can sometimes be enjoyed on a weeknight at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestra Musicians.
At Night.:
There is very little artificial light at night. After dark enjoy what nature has to offer. Many nights you can watch the stars, planes and satellites move across the black sky. Listen to the loons, crickets and frogs or on warm nights you can dance among the fire flies. If you are lucky a full moon is something to really enjoy.
Golf:
Be sure to bring your clubs. A couple of courses are just minutes away but if you have time and $$, see if you can get a tee time in Bar Harbor. Courses nearby are Kebo Valley Club in Bar Harbor, White Birches in Hancock and Grindstone in Winter Harbor.
