Patten Bay Chalet is a 2200 square foot three level custom Lindal Western Red Cedar Chalet (see http://lindal.com/homes/gallery/classic/) located on a gently sloping property that affords great views out over Patten Bay and across to Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park in the distance. The house is on three levels with the main living space on the first floor, elevated so that the south facing windows and the 600 square foot deck give a great view over the property and out over the bay.
The common living spaces for the house are all oriented towards the 'walls of windows' that face south on the garden level and the first floor of the house. The garden level common areas include the office and family room, both facing south and opening up on the garden and the year. The first floor common rooms include the dining room, living room and all-glass sunroom with its own private porch.
The chalet has four bedrooms and 2 3/4 baths. The master bedroom is in the loft which opens out over the living room with a wonderful view of the bay. It has a new king bed and mattress (2013), new carpeting (2014), a library area with reading chair and an ensuite two room bath/dressing room. The first floor has two bedrooms at the back of the house and a full bath. The primary bedroom has a new queen bed and mattress (2013) and a private entrance to the bathroom. The second bedroom has a double bed and access to the bath through a short hallway. Both first floor bedrooms have new paint and carpeting in 2014. The fourth bedroom is on the garden level. It has a queen bed with a new mattress (2013) and has a 3/4 bath just outside the bedroom that it shares with the family room. Two foutons are also available if the sleeping arrangements need to be customized.
Having the bedrooms spread out over three floors makes for an unusual level of privacy and flexibility that one does not ordinarily experience.
The house is heated by hot water baseboard and the residential hot water comes off the furnace so evening showers do not involve negotiations about who is going to have first crack at the hot water: There is enough for everyone. Water is from a private well and is not only safe, but delicious. Secondary heating is from a Jotul propane stove on the garden level and a propane fireplace insert in the living room. Evening fires can be had at the touch of a button both for ambiance and a little extra heat on cool mornings.
The kitchen is complete with a complement of full-sized appliances including four burner electric Jenn-Air downdraft stove top, Jenn-Air oven, 2.2 cubic food microwave, 22 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer with automatic icemaker, dishwasher, and a host of plug-in appliances including a 4-slice toaster, 12 cup coffee machine and grinder, electric kettle, and more. The kitchen is well stocked with all pots, pans, cooking utensils, as well as a sufficient supply of silverware and dishes for a party of 8.
There is a utility room in the back of the garden level that has a full sized washer and dryer that are available to our guests should the need for clothes washing arise.
Patten Bay Chalet is sited on a lot of just less than two acres in such a way that privacy is guaranteed. There is a buffer of trees to the back of the house and on either side as well, shielding you completely from the neighbors. From Viking Trail Lane you cannot see the house. Privacy is assured and yet, with the sloping property, you have an expansive view out over the water. The grounds are under constant improvement with the fire pit, outside stairs between levels, and the croquet lawn being the major additions for the 2014 season.
Patten Bay Chalet is in a small (9 lot), private, residential community. Although hidden in the woods, the Chalet still has a spectacular view of Patten Bay as well as Mt. Desert Island across the water. The Chalet has access to a private association beach just 200 yards away for those so inclined. Kids can spend a lot of time on the beach at low tide. A public freshwater beach, great for family outings, is 9 miles away on Branch Lake.
Patten Bay Chalet has undergone a major three-year upgrade and is now in top shape inside and out. Projects from new flooring (garden level) to new windows and doors, new propane service, new water heater, new beds and mattresses, new carpets in all bedrooms and public spaces, new decking, and full property clean-up have been completed. The house has nothing to apologize for.
Patten Bay Chalet is the ideal starting point for exploring the Acadia/Downeast region. The serenity that surrounds the house enhances relaxation after a full day of activities enjoying what Maine has to offer. The house location is perfect for visits to not only Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island, but also outings to Schoodic Peninsula and Downeast Maine as well as Blue Hill and Deer Isle on the other side of the world famous Eggamoggin Reach that connects Penobscot and Blue Hill Bays.

Between the two of us we have fifty years in the Acadia region. We chose Surry because it is close to everything but not in the middle of anything. It is quite and, when you open your ears, you can hear the silence. Wildlife abounds and, in the quiet, you can hear the evening call of the Loons from the water or the cry of the Osprey overhead.
After three years of searching we found Patten Bay Chalet which was just what we were looking for: a solid home in a lovely neighborhood, with privacy and, at the same time accessibility to all the activities that bring people to Downeast Maine.
Four separate peninsulas/islands are equally accessible and, when needed, Bangor is close by. We love it.
Patten Bay Chalet has good qui, which is Chinese for 'energy.' The house just 'feels' good. It faces south so is well-lit all day. It looks out over the sloping front yard to Patten Bay and then across the water to Acadia in the distance. No matter where you are, you catch a glimpse of the space in front of the house and the water close by. At the same time the house is tucked in between two stands of trees on the sides and trees behind, giving the property a sense of privacy and snugness.
The house is solidly built and, in the distance between the road and the house there is nothing but trees so whatever road noise there is (which is not that much) is muted or overcome by the rustling of the leaves on the trees. You really feel isolated from the noises of civilization. Just sitting on the deck doing nothing is a like a tonic, refreshing both body and soul. Many of our guests have stated that they have never felt more relaxed than when sitting on the deck, looking out over the water.
Patten Bay Chalet is a wonderfully private place but located near the many things that Downeast Maine has to offer. Looking out from the porch it is difficult to tell that you have any neighbors at all and yet the property is less than ten minutes from some of the best restaurants in Downeast Maine in Ellsworth and Blue Hill, thirty minutes to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, and only forty minutes to either Stonington on Deer Isle or Schoodic Peninsula (the quiet part of Acadia.) Go further Downeast and you quickly run into small fishing villages tucked in tiny coves along the coast. Move inland just a couple of miles and you start to find freshwater lakes with swimming, boating, and fishing to keep you busy for the summer. Maine starts just beyond your doorstep.
