Kona Country Road affords the traveler a rare glimpse into the real Hawaii; something most tourists never see. Pre-discovery architectural features exist on this property. It's quiet compared to town with only the melodic sounds of birds in the background.
Quiet, peaceful surroundings. Hawaiian history. Tropical Fruit orchard.
If you are looking for a very nice place to stay while visiting Kailua-Kona, I strongly suggest staying with Wendy and Harry at their Tropical Vacation Paradise. When we walked in both my wife and I felt like we where home. The unit is located on the mountain side above Kailua-Kona with a beautiful view looking out over the ocean. My wife and I loved being able to go sight seeing and traveling around the Big Island and knowing that at the end of the day we were able to return to our private hideaway and enjoy the peace and quite and unwind from the days events. If you don’t feel like eating out and you need a nice home cooked meal there are grocery stores just down the hill where you can pick up food and with the full kitchen and bbq you can make a home cooked meal.
You can set on your private lanai and watch beautiful sunsets and listen to the wild turkeys gobble as they roam through out the orchard. I really enjoyed sitting on the lanai early in the morning having a great cup of Kona coffee and watching the orchard come alive.
As far as feeling safe, I felt safer being at the unit than I did walking around some of souvenir stores downtown. We slept with the doors and windows open feeling completely safe and knowing that all the neighbors watch out for each other. If you did not know where the house is located you would never find it. That in its self makes you feel comfortable knowing there are not any strangers walking around.
If you are looking to extend you vacation by couple days, I would suggest staying in this wonderful place and you can then use the money you saved on lodging to enjoy a few more days of paradise on the Big Island.
We have suggest to numerous friends and family members that when they visit Hawaii they need to stay at this Tropical Ohana. If you need a larger place to stay, I would also like to suggest you check out Wendy and Harry’s Kona Lighthouse which sleeps up to 10 people. It is located near the coast and is just as nice as the mountainside hideaway.
The property is situated just a few minutes outside Kailua-Kona, and as such it provides an ideal base for exploring the ‘Big Island’. It is at the end of a narrow residential road, several hundred feet higher and a few degrees cooler than at the coast. It is in an extremely quiet location and we were able to enjoy all the sights, sounds and smells expected in this tropical environment. It came as a surprise that we could not lock the property when we went out for the day. The suggestion was that the area was totally safe and other house holders in the road watch out for strangers. Although there is no passing traffic, we still felt ill at ease leaving expensive equipment in the house. The property is accurately described and it met our needs perfectly. We really liked the fantastic view from the lanai, providing glorious sunsets over the bay. The living room furniture is comfortable, with a settee and two arm chairs, all in a cane finish. The kitchen provides every facility needed for a self-catering holiday, with full sized gas hob and oven, as well as a large fridge / freezer and microwave. There was plenty of crockery with enough pans for cooking. The bathroom was perfectly acceptable with a toilet, sink and shower over a bath. We did have some problems with the boiler which meant that the provision of hot water was not totally dependable. There were also issues with the toilet cistern which required a particular technique in its operation to prevent wastage of water. The spacious bedrooms had plenty of storage. We found the huge bed in the right-hand bedroom to be very comfortable. The wi-fi generally worked well so we could keep up with family back in the UK. It was occasionally unavailable but this was not within the owners’ control to rectify the situation.
I would have little hesitation in recommending this property to future holiday-makers. The owners live on the upper floor and it was reassuring to know that they were there to provide assistance and advice. As we were often out quite early, we sometimes went for days without speaking to them. I would like to thank Wendy for all her help with our departure arrangements. However, I feel that there could be swifter e-mail replies to enquiries leading up to the rental period as this inspires confidence that all will be well on arrival.
Everything we could have wanted for our quiet getaway. We stayed for a month, and this truly felt like home! Harry and Wendy were great! We can't wait to get back!! We have been planning our return trip, since our flight home. Thank you for everything!!
I was a little nervous going to someone's home so I talked to Wendy on the phone and emailed and decided it was the right thing for my family. I have a one and a half year old son so we needed to be home more then other people might and it was wonderful. Wendy had everything we might need...stroller, highchair a little bed for our son, toys and books. The yard was great, we picked fruit and played games. We came in at night after a long days travel and everything felt homey. Wendy picked fruit for us upon arrival and had some muffins and a small milk for us in the fridge knowing how late we would be coming. I really appreciated that Wendy thank you :) Even though we spent a lot of time on the property I didn't see Wendy or Harry very often. When I did they were helpful and pleasant. In fact I never even saw them to say good bye and thank you. This place is very clean, at night it is cool and it is away from everyone making it quiet. I miss it so much already and would love to come back someday!
Thank you so much Wendy for your home, help and giving us a good experience with home away from home. hope to come back
My wife and I have stayed in lots of glassed-in rooms high in hotels that look and feel pretty much the same no matter where in the world they may be. But when we wanted to experience Hawaii…the real Hawaii, we were happy we found Kona Country Road in 2010; in fact we were so happy that we decided to stay there again in 2011. Harry and Wendy Pritikin were very friendly and welcoming to us, and helped us make the most of our trip. We loved having a home-away-from-home that felt warm and relaxing, not cold and commercial.
Our own experience at Kona Country Road made it an easy choice to recommend to my parents as their wedding anniversary destination this past August. They also were delighted:
“Your home and yard, with the orchids, ginger, fruit trees, and the views overlooking the ocean was the perfect place to celebrate our 65th wedding anniversary. This is the real Hawaii. Entering the house for the first time gave us the feeling of being at home. We even loved seeing the wild life. We also loved all the information that was available of the area. Staying at your home was a real treat.”
We would gladly recommend Kona Country Road to anybody as the perfect place to get the most of their stay in Hawaii.
My husband and I stayed here for several nights and have already made plans to come back. This tropical ohana was clean, comfortable and conveniently located to Kailua and its beaches. We loved staying at the house and enjoyed having our Kona Coffee on the lanai. The field of fruit right on the property was the most fun - picking at our hearts desire. The owners couldn't be more accommodating and even included us as guests for
lanai grilling. We have recommended this rental to our friends and look forward the next time we come.
Our Tropical Ohana is located at the end of an old Hawaiian Homestead road surrounded by coffee and macadamia nut farms yet just minutes to the bustling fishing village of Kailua-Kona. Jet skiing, parasailing and fishing, scuba and snorkeling charters are available there. Kailua-Kona is central to all the activities the Big Island has to offer. There are beaches and golf courses nearby and other beaches and golf coursed within easy driving distance. You can drive south to the countries only active volcano or drive north to the worlds premier astronomy center atop the 14,000 foot Mauna Kea. Winter activities are available atop Mauna Kea when there is snow.
Other Activities: snowboarding, basketball court, boating, spa, shopping, kayaking, wildlife viewing, horseback riding and much much more.
