Illustrated in many historic photographs, the fascinating history of the beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley, where the resorts of Murren and Wengen still reflect the former influence of early British tourism. Among the first enthusiastic visitors to the Lauterbrunnen Valley were such great names as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Lord Byron, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Mürren is regarded as the cradle of Alpine Ski Sport and the modern slalom was also born here, devised by Sir Arnold Lunn.

Ice sports and tobogganing:
The two artificial ice-rinks at the Alpine Sports Center in Mürren are perfect for ice skating.
Tobogganing, as seen here on the fantastic forest run from Sulwald to Isenfluh, has a long tradition in the area. The familiar wooden toboggans are still often used as a means of transport on snow covered village streets and paths.
Tobogganing remains a great favourite with all age groups.Toboggans and bobs can be hired at local sports shops.

The villages of Mürren, Wengen,Lauterbrunnen, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh all belong to a sunny winter walking wonderland, with well maintained trails through stunning Alpine scenery.
