'Rugosa' is a historic Arts & Crafts residence that once housed the modern art collection of Lois Orswell, whose father built the house in 1920. Rugosa is located at Narragansett Pier 300 yards from the open ocean of Block Island Sound and 400 yards from Narragansett Town Beach, one of the finest on the East coast. The house is comfortable and very private, surrounded by stone walls and mature trees, on 2 landscaped acres, and includes gardens, a fish pool and a badminton court. The house has been well-maintained, and the kitchen was recently modernized. The Narragansett town center is only 0.7 miles with gourmet shopping and dining, and the charming town of Wakefield only 3 miles. Narragansett is without the summer crowding of historic Newport, but the latter is only 20 minutes by auto.

Summer Music Festivals: Newport (20 minutes by auto) - Jazz Festivals (2); Newport - Folk Festival; Newport - The Newport Music Festival (Classical); Kingston (10 minutes by auto) at the University of Rhode Island - Kingston Chamber Music Festival.

Sports: Surfing, Kayaking, Tennis: Surf board rentals are available at two locations in Narragansett Pier (1/2 mile).

Kayak rentals are available at Middle Bridge on the Narrow River (3 minutes by auto), which flows (1/2 mile) into the ocean just north of the Narragansett Beach.

Tennis courts (5, hard surface) are available at Sprague Park in Narragansett (3/4 mile).

Across from a beautiful ocean beach, 'Rugosa' is adjacent to Narragansett Pier at the mouth of Narragansett Bay and 500 yards from the Pettaquamscott River where kayaks can be rented and taken down the river to its ocean outlet north of the beach. Rugosa is 20 minutes by car from historic Newport, and 5 miles from Galilee and Point Judith where ferries run to Block Island and boats leave for deep sea fishing and whale watching.

Other Activities: Deep Sea Fishing from Galilee (5 miles)

Golf: Several excellent golf courses are within a 25 minute drive. The best of these are Newport National, Meadowbrook, the Exeter Country Club, and the Richmond Country Club.

My vacation this year is taking me out of the country to Italy and to Prague. We all think of Rugosa with great affection.... Possibly, we will be able to return to your charming house.

We really enjoyed staying in your beautiful house. We made wonderful meals in your amazingly outfitted kitchen, and really loved the birds, chipmunks and garden. Such a beautiful respite from the hubbub of the city. Thank you so much...for opening your house and outfitting it so well for visitors.
