Walk out the front door and follow a footpath over the dunes to a fabulous beach where the Atlantic Ocean and Merrimack River meet to spawn some of the best fishing and surfcasting in New England. Stripers and bluefish cruise this nine mile stretch of beach. Bait and tackle are available nearby, or, if you prefer, join others on a party boat at the Captains' Fleet one half mile up the road.
The island is noted for its singular beauty as a barrier beach and its funky feel. Within walking distance are several restaurants, and an 'island store' for restocking your victuals. There is even a take-out restaurant where you can order your lobsters precooked.
The National Wildlife Refuge hosts hundreds of acres of open space for walking boardwalks or for bird watching, and seven miles of dirt road for biking to Sandy Point for a picnic. There are several places to launch kayaks, small boats, or hire deep sea fishing charters.
