Water Island or 'Isla de Agua ' reportedly was named for freshwater ponds that once existed on the island. At
492 acres, Water Island is the largest cay in the Virgin Islands and the smallest of the four main islands that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. it is located about 1/2 mile south-southwest of St. Thomas' main harbor, Charlotte Amalie.Water Island is about 2 1/2 miles long and one mile wide. The maximum elevation is 384 meters above sea level. The island has a rich natural diversity with a varied coastline featuring many bays, beaches, wetlands, ponds and coral reefs. As part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, it is officially a US Virgin Islands in 1996. History is rich. Archaeological digs have revealed artifacts from the Amerindians that migrated to the island from coastal South America. Water Island's colonial history dates from the 1670's with domination by the Danish West Indies company for a century. In 1917, the US bought Water Islands from Denmark; for strategic purposes.
