Further details for this vacation house rental in Bar Harbor, Maine

'l’Isle des Monts Désert': “The Island of Barren Mountains,” named by Samuel de Champlain when he first sighted it in 1604, Mount Desert Island lies just off the rugged coast of Downeast Maine, with Frenchman Bay to the East and Blue Hill Bay to the West. Its twenty-six domed granite summits seemingly rise straight out of the Atlantic, and trap more than twenty glistening fresh water lakes and ponds between their flanks. On this compact yet dramatic island you will find some 30,000 acres of Acadia National Park, preserved by foresighted and benevolent conservation pioneers for your amazement and enjoyment. Over 130 miles of hiking trails and 57 miles of impeccable, car-free carriage roads, you can enjoy everything from a casual stroll to a highly technical climb. Perhaps even a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park?

Around and about in Bar Harbor: Our village is the largest and most well-known of Mount Desert Island’s communities. An eminently walkable village, Bar Harbor is nestled between the ocean and Acadia National Park, and filled with a rich array of restaurants, shops and boutiques, and fine galleries. Here you will also find the home bases for all your Acadian adventures. What shall it be? * Whale watch, island ferry, or schooner cruise? * Bicycle, kayak or canoe rental or tour? * Golf in the shadow of Cadillac Mountain at historic Kebo Valley? * Crossing the bar at low tide to explore Bar Island in Frenchman Bay? * Even a day trip to Nova Scotia on the high-speed “Cat” ferry? Add to this variety of activities the numerous concerts, festivals, exhibits, lectures and other special events that fill the calendar in Bar Harbor, and you’ll find your days and your nights overflowing with fun.

Island Experience: While here, be sure to visit the island’s other villages: Northeast Harbor, with its grand cottages and yacht-filled harbor, and Southwest Harbor on the “quiet side”, across Somes Sound. Here you will find numerous boat-building operations, birthplace of some of the finest sailboats afloat. Nearby, seek out the Bass Harbor Light, so beloved of photographers and painters. Or, for a taste of real Maine island life, ride one of the many ferries servicing the several tiny island communities off Mount Desert’s shores.

Wonderful Home

Review Submitted: October 6, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Spent a wonderful week with friends at Crocus Cottage. We all remarked on how quickly we felt at home in the cottage. From the wonderful gourmet kitchen to the cozy LR fireplace and comfy upstairs bonus room, the home had everything we needed and more. Location is downtown and close to all the restaurants and shops. A great deal of our time was spent in Acadia which is a short drive/shuttle away. The house was perfect and would definitely stay here on our next trip.

Our Crocus Cottage Stay

Bky St. Peters, MO, USA
Review Submitted: October 7, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
My family and I stayed at the Crocus Cottage late Sept./early Oct. of 2008. We found it to be very clean, quite cozy, and welcoming. The location is perfect if you're wanting to be able to stroll to downtown Bar Harbor. There is a grocery store very close by, which we found quite handy. They even provided a lobster pot in the kitchen, so we cooked a lobster dinner one evening at the cottage. Quite honestly, that was one of our favorite memories of the entire stay! Thanks to Gary and Heidi for allowing us to rent their lovely cottage.
