About Robin Whitten

My husband and I work and live in Portland. Our 'day' jobs are architect and magazine editor. When we travel we prefer to find apartments to rent vs.hotels. We like to experience and explore the neighborhoods.

Robin Whitten purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Robin Whitten chose Portland

19 Lewis Street is in a lovely residential area that is quiet but close to everything.

What makes this apartment unique

We discovered recently that 19 Lewis Street was designed early in the 20th century by John Calvin Stevens, Portland's preeminent architect. So it is indeed a special historic property.

Clean, beautiful nice location, but a few problems

  • 4 of 5
The apartment was clean and lovely, nicely furnished and decorated, and within walking distance of many conveniences. We loved the neighborhood, found lots to do and enjoyed Portland very much. I would recommend purchasing Old Port passes that give access to 5 attractions at a reduced cost. One can take many tours of the city or self-directed lighthouse or walking tours.

However, some of the amenities listed for this vacation rental were not available: shampoo, Mac and PC computers. We ended up walking to a gas-station convenience store at 11:30 pm for shampoo. (I suggested to the owner that items be removed from future listings, if not available.)

The coffee maker didn't work and the hair dryer (which we couldn't find for several days) died after one use.

The electricity was shut off for a day ---we were not informed ahead of time as other building tenants were. After power was restored, it took several hours before we could access wifi again. The locks to the apartments were difficult.---keys stuck in both doors to the apartment, although the door into the building was easy.

Be aware that the apartment is on the second floor of an old building (no elevator.) We were unaware of this ---probably should have asked ---and although we don't need ramps or elevators on a day-to-day basis, we are an older couple with some arthritis and back problems, so carrying our belongings in and out were difficult.

The owners were out of town. The woman they left in charge did her best to resolve our issues.

Since the apartment was very nice, I would love to be able to give it a 5-star rating. Even though nothing was terrible, the small inconveniences accumulated day by day, so we cannot give it a top rating.

Perfect location

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at this West End apartment. The two living areas were open, airy and spacious with comfortable seating where we enjoyed relaxing after busy days. The location is on a lovely, quiet street within walking distance to great restaurants and everything Portland has to offer. We look forward to returning!

Good Place

  • 4 of 5
This is an apartment in a nice Victorian building. The owners/managers have retrofitted it to suit modern technology and expectations, and have done a good job. I thought it was a very comfortable, nice place, with some of the charm and oddness of a Victorian, along with the conveniences of modern living. I would recommend it to anyone except a crabby perfectionist who does not understand that a Victorian requires some flexibility and humor.

Elegant, comfortable Portland perch

  • 5 of 5
This clean, comfortable and impeccably furnished apartment is in a quiet, safe neighborhood just a 20-minute walk from the bustling Old Port. The kitchen is larger and more functional than it appears in the photos, the two living rooms (one with pocket doors, in which another couple can sleep), made for great places to hang-out over drinks in between activities around town.
Though I've been visiting Portland for 25 years, I'd never wandered much in the West End. It's a lovely neighborhood, with beautiful Victorian era townhouses, like this one. It's also a 5-minute walk to the Western Promenade.
All in all, a perfect base from which to enjoy all Portland has to offer.

Warning! Bats & Reneging Landlord, Cig. Smoke

Warning! Bats & Reneging Landlord, Cig. Smoke
  • 1 of 5
We awoke one night to bats flying around the apartment. The only opening we could find was the chimney. The Portland area health department recommends rabies vaccination when in close proximity to bats. When we notified the landlord, we were assured that they would cover the medical cost. When the bills came in, the landlord refused to pay and had his secretary block my call. When I called his private line, he told me that he wasn't paying because it cost more than he expected and his attorney said he didn't have to. He attempted to lay the blame on us by saying that we had left a screen open. No screens were open the night of the incident. We were left to pay over $4,000 in medical bills.
Additionally, despite assurances of a quick remedy to the chimney situation, the open chimney was not corrected the entire 7 weeks we were there. We blocked it ourselves with cardboard. The apartment had windows that we could not open and one that would not close, the screens were in disrepair, both closets had a foul smell and we found large silverfish in the kitchen.
We were told that smoking was not allowed in this apartment. When we got there, the apartment was regularly filled with the smell of cigarette smoke. The management told us that other tenants could smoke in their apartments. We spent our 7 week vacation smelling other people's cigarette smoke in our living space.
This was the worst rental experience we have had, by far.
