Quiet cottage charm and simple comforts describe this year round home. Accented with the original knotty-pine, newer touches have been added for your comfort. Spacious open living and dining areas adjoin the two bedrooms and bath.Lots of windows and a wood burning fireplace in the living room provide feelings of both coziness and light. A separate large enclosed porch (12x23) provides an additional gathering space for sipping your morning coffee or evening cocktail, having a meal or just taking a snooze. Located just outside is the gas BBQ grill, enclosed outdoor shower and flat grassy yard with picnic table and lawn chairs for casual entertaining. The living, dining room and bedrooms feature new windows and window a/cs. Berber carpeting in main part of home; bamboo flooring graces the porch and kitchen for easy sweeping. But the best part of this home - the wide expanse of private, sandy beach is just a short walk away(about ten houses) down a private lane. Swim, sit, enjoy!

Good Stuff: Located within an easy 50 minute drive of Hartford and 2 - 2 1/2 hours from New York and Boston, this beach community evokes feelings of times gone by when whole families strolled together after dinner or kids rode their bikes to Dairy Queen or gathered on the beach in the evenings while parents relaxed at home. When it is Parents' Night Out, the casinos, live theatre (Goodspeed and Ivoryton) or dining options ranging from the romantic Copper Beech Inn and Water's Edge (check out the Sunset Grill) to Pazzos, Cafe Routier , Lenny and Joes and several others offer something for everyone. For live music afficianados, Bill's offers eclectic music and the Tap Room at the historic Gris in Essex is known for its weekend banjo singalongs. Beautiful drives along the Fenway Causeway to Saybrook Point or exploring the seacoast towns of Madison and Guilford or the Thimble Islands provide further dalliance. Historic Newport or Mystic Seaport are both wonderful day trips as well.

Shopping: A good rainy day activity (or any day for some), Clinton Premium Outlets and Westbrook Factory Outlets are both within a ten minute drive of our home. The outlets in Westbrook are also home to a multiplex theatre complex. If smaller, artistic shopping is your cup of tea, Essex and Old Saybrook provide a wonderful Main St. experience. Think the Hamptons without the attitude. For antique buffs, this area is a treasure trove. The Sunday flea market, a mile away, is a fun way to start the day. Pick up some doughnuts at the BeachNut Doughnut shop - a stone's throw from the flea market and it's an even better way to begin your day. Several other antique shops or collectibles throughout the area are within a twenty minute drive. And don't forget the wonderful crabbing spots and farm stands scattered here and there.

Availability: Available both as a summer rental (two week minimum per Island View Beach Assoc. bylaws) or weekly in the fall or spring or as academic rental ( Labor Day through Memorial Day), this well kept home in a very quiet beach community is a haven from everyday stresses. Please note there is no washer/dryer but laundromat about a mile away.

About Davia Lehn

I grew up in CT but moved to California after college. Every year my mom would rent a cottage for a family vacation and on one such vacation, I found this little home. I knew that someday I would be returning to CT (I have) and wanted something of the CT shore that had provided me with so many wonderful memories both as a child and as an adult.

While renting around the corner in this lovely beach community, a rainy day led me to take a walk where I saw the 'for sale' sign. A call to the realtor, my first sight of its cozy interior and tucked away location, open floor plan and sunny porch prompted an offer the next day. Six weeks later, we celebrated my daughter's 8th birthday there and many other gatherings have since followed.

Westbrook is a small year round community comprised of several beach communities, each with its own character. Its location approximately two hours from New York and only 45 minutes from Hartford make it an easy getaway for local folks who just want a day at the beach (or have a hankering for a clam or lobster roll) or for those flying into Hartford or one of the airports in NY from overseas to embark upon a New England vacation.

Water activities abound with fishing, boating, and kayaking while for others time near the water is just a way to ratchet down and relax with long walks or just watching the kids play or reading on the beach. For 'night people', the casinos are about 40 minutes away with all the entertainment one could want. There is no lack of services with close by restaurants, grocery stores and great shopping at the outlets as well as boutiques and summer fairs in the surrounding towns. There is even a hospital close by if an emergency were to arise.

Additional information about rental rates

Cleaning $75

Payment is usually accepted in the quoted currency (US Dollar) unless the currency and the amount is specifically agreed in advance with the owner / advertiser.

Notes

  • Cleaning fee will be returned if home left in same condition as found.
  • For summer and off peak rentals, there is a $300 security deposit and $75 cleaning fee. Both fully refundable if nothing damaged and home left as found. Tenant to provide own linens unless other arrangement made with owners.

    For full season academic rental, September to Memorial Day - $1100 per month plus security deposit as well credit and reference check. No smokers or pets.

    Please note that during summer, rentals must be in no less than two week increments (Island View Beach Association rules)
  • 2013 Summer rates -$1350 per week ; 2 week minimum (association rules)

    May, early June, Sept. and Oct. weekly rental - $1000 per week.


    Fall 2013 Academic Rental - October to mid May - $1100 per month plus utilities (full term only).

A nice little house with a great sun porch. Everything you need: grill, outdoor shower, beach chairs. A very short walk to a quiet secluded beach.
Close to shops, movies, restaurants, and train.
Great place to relax and unwind.
