Great Barrington Cottage Rental Photos and Description
Private waterfront, deck overlooking the Lake. Canoes, kayaks, summer nights...
The Little House at Lake Buel is a cute, unique, 6-room-long Country Cottage with a charming history, as each room was added in a different year. The house is situated along the crest of a gentle slope that overlooks our 360' Private Cove, Dock, Boats, and Swim Area. Though it is up to date with WiFi, DirecTV, dishwasher, and phone with free long distance (in the U.S. and Canada), the Little House nevertheless retains its old-fashioned country feel.
Each of its pine-paneled rooms has a view of the Lake. Four people would be a comfortable fit, but six is our maximum.
The Dining Room is the Front Door Room. When you step inside, the Lake itself greets you, your eye drawn at once past the table (that seats 6) out through the picture window.
To the right of the Dining Room, two steps down, is the Sunken Living Room with its huge recycled antique picture window. This is the Peace and Quiet Room, perfect for collecting your thoughts, concentrating on your reading, your writing. It is also a wonderful room for listening to music on the FM radio/CD player, or for playing your own music on your fiddle, your harmonica, your ukulele. If you feel the need to be alone, you can close yourself in by shutting the door to the Dining Room and the one to the Family Room.
The Family Room is just beyond the Living Room, two steps up. It is a spacious room with a high peaked ceiling, sliding glass windows on three sides, a sofa, easy chairs, an old-fashioned rocking chair, an activities/dining table, a hi-rise couch for afternoon naps. The hi-rise can be opened to 2 twin beds for family or guests. The television is in this room.
Off the Family Room is a long Wooden Deck, a sort of private aerie that also overlooks the Lake. There are two chaise lounges out there, four camp chairs, an outdoor dining table. It is private enough for you to laze with your morning coffee while you sketch out your day.
The Country Kitchen is next to the Dining Room, to the left as you come in. A compact space, it nevertheless has a double-sink, lots of hot water, a gas stove, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, electric coffee maker, refrigerator, plus all the pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, gadgets, and under-the-sink items you could possibly need. The Gas Grille is just outside the door.
The Queen bedroom is the next room to the Kitchen. It is en suite with the Twin Bedroom and the Remarkably Spacious Bathroom. The Twin Bedroom itself has sliding glass windows on three sides with privacy screens that roll down. Both the Queen bedroom and the Bathroom have ceiling fans; the Twin Bedroom has the breeze.
The Queen bedroom, the Sunken Living Room, and the Family Room have baseboard heat.
All bed, bath, and kitchen linens, even beach towels, are provided.
And a washer and dryer are at your disposal, detergent provided.
At the dock (shared with owner) are a wooden bench, sun umbrella, chaise, and chairs, plus two canoes and kayaks exclusively for your use (really). Life jackets of all sizes are in the Living Room closet. (Note: The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires you to have life jackets in your boat. A non-swimmer or a child MUST be wearing his.)
Besides its creature comforts, here’s the best part of this summer place:
The Little House is comfortably nestled in an open woods on a quiet, old-fashioned, country dirt road that begs the early morning walk. Traffic is local, neighbors noddingly friendly. You'll feel safe there. A day or so after you've settled in, you'll find you have fallen into a spell. You'll realize you've been thinking not of your usual workaday cares, but of watching boats go by, of taking a swim off the dock, of surrendering to an afternoon nap out under the sky re-discovering what relaxation really feels like. There's a certain magic in living by a Lake: There is nothing to do, there is everything to do. The beauty of it is, you don't have to do anything at all.
