Sitka is a small community located on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska. One of Alaska's most popular inside passage stops, Sitka is well known as the original capital of Alaska when it was under Russia's ownership. Sitka is also known as one of the best Salmon and Halibut fishing locations in the world. Why do Salmon Love Sitka? Sitka is right on the Pacific Ocean, where the salmon are and because of it's outwardly position, is naturally the foremost spot for salmon to start their run up the rivers. Since we have hundreds of streams that dump into Sitka Sound, Sitka Sound becomes a funnel for the salmon to pass through on their way to the streams to lay their eggs.
Why Do Halibut Love Sitka! Halibut are bottom feeders and they know the salmon will die on laying their eggs and the remains of their bodies will pass down the streams back into Sitka Sound, so the halibut naturally follow the salmon into the sound, then wait for food to come back down to them
