We are from Berkeley California and decided to build this retreat fior our families in 2009 - Come stay at our place, and get some sun!
The Owner purchased this house in 2009
Read the reviews - this is the best location on the islands for downtown and airport access, while still secluded and over the water!
Our guests have stayed to relax, read or even write a novel, or to party. Walk across the street to a beach, jump off our deck into the Caribbean, or surf at Tiger Tail only 2 miles away. You can have it all from Casa Bocas.
There are several positive aspects about this rental; that you can sit on the deck and be over the water, you can look through the floorboards in the house and see the water below, and the breeze off the water means you will almost always be comfortable. The floorplan is spacious, 7 of us stayed here quite comfortably, with lots of room to find a nook to read or take a nap. The kitchen is large, the bathrooms are spacious as well, the beds (at least mine) was comfortable and the linens are of good quality. There is a kayak to borrow, and plenty of beach-y items like hats, toys and ice-chests.
Not so good; the house needs a good once-over to replace what might have gone missing or never was. There are very few dishes, utensils or cookware pieces in the kitchen. Seven of us had to share 3 spoons, for instance. Not enough cups for everyone to have coffee at the same time, and wine? Two communal chalices... but hey, it made it intimate! Don't plan on cooking unless you intend to buy every single item you will need, from salt, pepper, and vegetable oil, to the sponge and soap to clean them with after.
Some have commented on walking through "the shantytown". This might have been charming for some, in a weird way, but reality is, you walk through a pretty sketchy neighborhood. I live in Central America, so I'm not assigning this classification lightly. We walked right past a crowd gathering for a cock fight (feathered variety) and the walkway to the house passes within 3 feet of people's front doors... it's hot and humid, the doors are open, you see what is going on and you hear everything.
The walkway to the house itself consists of a series of boards (in varying degrees of decay) that are nailed together to create a bridge. Quaint the first time in the daylight, challenging the second-fifth time, and plain disgusting after that when your olfactory sense and brain finally conclude the houses you're passing are dumping all their waste into the mangroves which you're gingerly treading over and hoping not to slip off the wobbly, slimy wooden walkway, into.
Then, when you have the chance (unfortunate) to be sitting outside the front door and hear something hitting the water below the house, you stoop down, and yep, directly coinciding with the sound of flushing inside is the plop plop outside. Shower well after your kayak trip, and avoid swimming in Saigon Bay.
I'm not sure where to begin this review. I booked and paid my deposit in Oct of 2014, in December I received an email saying my reservation was being canceled. After emails and international phone calls, Tyson, the prop manager, finally convinced the owner to let us stay the dates we reserved since NOTHING else was available. The house does set on a nice bay, but it is surrounded like much of the island in garbage (not really the owner's fault, just be prepared). There is only air conditioning in the "master bedroom" upstairs. The upstairs bathtub/shower leaks onto the KITCHEN counter when you use it, the guy in the office said "I know, sorry". They leave you absolutely nothing in the house except dishes and toilet paper, no dish soap, nothing to scrub dishes with, NOTHING. So be prepared to buy every single thing you might need. The water taxi is very expensive from the dock, you have to walk up the road a little to the gas station (covered in trash) to get a taxi for about 4-5 bucks into town each way. I have traveled all over the world and I mostly stay in homes. This was not my best experience. It was rather messed up from day one and filled with many misconceptions.
Spacious property with great views over the water and a resident heron perching just outside. Everything inside (including air con in main bedroom) works, though some crockery has not been replaced as it gets broken and paintwork could be refreshed.
Far enough out of Bocas town to be reasonably quiet and tucked away but not isolated. A five minute taxi ride to town for $1: though the route to the road (and small supermarket) where one can pick up a taxi is via a narrow boardwalk and muddy shanty town lane so access with luggage is easier and more pleasant by boat.
The management staff are mostly pleasant and efficient but we had the misfortune to be met on arrival by the exception: a guy with the appearance and personality (if not quite the intelligence} of a stick insect who gave us wrong information about which key let us into the house so we were stuck outside in the dark for some time.
We much enjoyed lounging on the spacious and comfortable outside decks looking at passing pelicans. Boat trips to other islands were easy and fun by ferry. We made one organised boat excursion to the north of Colon island including a perfect beach at Starfish bay, the bird island with amazing tropic birds, and freshly caught lobster lunch at a beach restaurant: Kamania tours set up the trip for a very modest price and picked us up by boat direct from the house with a friendly English speaking boatman.
Despite our minor niggles, the house was excellent value with comfortable space for several more people than the 2 of us.
The house is spacious and well laid out inside for a large group although there were only two of us. The deck over the water goes all the way around and gives good views of the surroundings. We probably saw more boats and planes than wildlife but the local heron kept us entertained. The downsides are that the house looks a little tired and the equipment and particularly the crockery was an odd assortment which was not really adequate. The walk from the house to the gas station through the local shanty town was not particularly pleasant but once there this served as a good hub for taxis to town and it also had a small supermarket. The taxis are good value at $1 pp. We warmed to the town but mostly enjoyed the trips out to other parts of the island and across to the other islands. We got used to travelling everywhere by boat and found the cost of these quite reasonable. Our meet and greet service from Dominic left a lot to be desired but Stephanie in the Bocas office was helpful and our maintenance problems were sorted out efficiently. We would recommend the house to a group on a budget looking to be in a rural area but still accessible to town.
Just got back from Bocas Del Toro. Had a great time with my family and loved Casa Bocas. It was everything it said it would be.
Our stay in the house was great! We had an amazing time and the house was very spacious for the whole party.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are in great shape, as well as the rest of the house.
Is great to have the ocean in your backyard, even better with the kayak of the house.
The managers gave us an excellent service and were very kind.
I highly recommend the house for every type of traveler.
