Guestbook comments from the owner

Peter,

All of us were....what would the word be?..."enraptured" is what comes to mind...by the mysterious and enduring and grand setting that is your wonderful sheepfarm/lodge/holiday home.

Son and Husband climbed the peek seen out the living area windows (base at the junction of the five roads) on a whim one morning and had such a fine time. We all hiked up the rise behind the house (Sifin?) in a howling wind and felt good to have the cobwebs blown out of our minds/hearts/lungs. It is a stunning and evocative place. Thank you for providing for us so very well and for being a part of locking in some extended family memory-making.

The sheep were great surrogate hosts...such personalities!

We had to leave to get Husband back to his other life (work), but we thoroughly enjoyed our days in your world.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Best Location Ever!

  • 5 of 5
Our group loved the Barralach cottages. The main building is a great social space, with plenty of room for 10 people to hang out in the evenings. We all made use of the massive dining table and log fire in the sitting area.

Best thing though is Barralach's location, easily the best of any self-catering house I've ever stayed. Views are stunning, across the bay and round to Carrauntoohil. Despite being easy to reach by car, there is a feeling of being out in the wilds, away from any neighbours.

We found no shortage of activities in the surrounding area, the highlights being climbing Carrauntoohil and visiting the island of Skellig. There are also plenty of excellent local walks which start from Barralach. Peter's guide to County Kerry was a very useful reference and we ended up visiting a number of fantastic places we wouldn't have found otherwise.

In short, Barralach is a brilliant place to stay, highly recommended!

Unforgettable family memories will be made here!

  • 5 of 5
We visited Barralach in Mid-May, with our 10 children and 87 year old Grandma. Each of us could write our own 5 star review. We travel to Kerry every two years, and this was an undiscovered jewel. You felt instantly that you were an invited guest in the home of a friend. Although the wifi connection was very good, the extensive book selection pulled us away from technology. The artwork throughout the place (including a massive canvas over the fireplace) is quite notable. One of our favorite things was the incredible dining table (which sat us all comfortably). It appeared to be hewn from a single piece of wood, and was so wide we felt like every meal was a special feast. Also noteworthy is the well stocked mudroom. There is a wide selection of wellingtons and rain gear that is available for guests to use.
For hikers, we discovered the road/driveway actually continues on (through a gate) to the shoulder of Seefin mountain. Just a short walk up the hill (on the road) will reward you with a wonderful sunset view over the Atlantic. On our farewell evening the whole gang (including Grandma!) hiked up to that memorable vista.
The kitchen is abundantly stocked with plenty of cutlery and plates. (even three different size teapots!) Guests are encouraged to use whatever spices and non perishables that are there (again making it feel more like home than a rental). Also, plenty of towels and extra blankets. Another plus was the huge supply of logs that were available for use in the fireplace.
Others have spoken of the views, so no need to reiterate!
When we left, we felt like we were leaving an old friend to whom we hope to return again soon.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this review. I get a huge kick out of knowing the pleasure Barralach gives others. Yes, the immense table is indeed one unjointed piece of wood. Well done Grandma, for getting up the hill to appreciate the amazing and romantic view over Dingle Bay.

Everything as presented and so much more !

I am an artist who conducts plein air art retreats all over the United States and Europe. Noting that this region of Ireland is the most beautiful place on earth, I had to check it out and began the search to find our home away from home for my nine other artists.

Peter's lovely Sheep Farm is everything as described and so much more. When we arrived at the farm, the panoramic views brought us to tears and took our breath away. The home is so welcoming and inviting. The house is very cozy, clean, comfortable, with amazing views from every room. Betty is a very sweet local lady who made us wonderful meals. We asked her to prepare for us her families favorites and her meals were fabulous. Another wonderful person we met was Shawn who operates Falvey's Cab and Mini Bus Hire in Glenbeigh. Shawn was amazing. He took such good care of us, a very knowledgeable, funny, guide. He always went way beyond the expected. This amazing farm home is just a short drive from town and close to all the sites we wanted to visit.
Our Glenbeigh vacation could not have been more perfect, from the beautiful home to the magnificant views. We came home with many beautiful paintings and thousands of photos. It was truly an artists paradise. The rating above only allows us to give a 5 star rating. We disagree and would give it a 10+. We can not wait to return again. Peter, thank you so much for allowing others to enjoy your piece of paradise.

Owner's Response: Thank you Joan so very much. You were lovely guests. And I wish you had your way and could give us more than the 5 star maximum allowed by the website! Come back soon and paint more of your beautiful canvases. Peter

Even better than the pictures!

Barralach was booked as a week long foray by London based mountaineering club, Ibex, to the mountains of Kerry.
Once the rough track upwards had been negotiated, we were treated to quite awe inspiring views of Dingle to the left, local rough terrier Commaun in front and the Reeks looming to the distant right. The notorious Atlantic weather had apparently gone on holiday at the same time and we were treated to glorious sunshine and associated views pretty much all week. The property itself is very well thought out; having most of the sleeping accommodation in seperate buildings made it particularly easy to organise sleeping arrangements. The arrangement would particularly suit groups of two or three families. The main building is well laid out with distinct kitchen, utility, dining and relaxing areas and is very well equipped. Of particular interest is the wall space, a rival to the National Gallery if I've ever seen one.
If you are an outdoors buff, this place will be heaven. The local freshwater lakes provide great swimming opportunities (once you get over the initial cold), bike hire (including kiddy trailer hire) is readily available in Killorglin or Killarney at very reasonable rates, but it must be the hills and beaches that capture the hearts and minds of people like me. To have mile upon mile of sunny beach available and only a handful of people to share it with is quite a novelty. To have hills just as challenging and rugged as anywhere else in the British Isles with similarly few people on is plain madness - these people really dont know what they are missing!
Overall, a quite brilliant trip, one which I would gladly organise again, using Peter's brilliant property without hesitation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this charming review. As you suggest, Barralach is indeed superb for groups of like-minded people. We have had golfers, fishermen, hill walkers, painters, bridge players, archaeologists, horse riders and of course large family get-togethers. They loved Barralach and we loved them.

Absolutely beautiful location

  • 5 of 5
Peter warned us to mind the road and not to be distracted by the beauty of the surroundings. Well he wasn't joking, we really did have to mind the road because the scenery driving up to the cottages was amazing! And the views from all the windows of the cottages and the garden are equally amazing. It is just the most perfect location if you enjoy beautiful scenery, peace and comfort. Our kids had complete freedom to play and discover the property and we could relax and enjoy everything.
Lots of places are near Barralach so there is plenty to do.
We would definitely recommend the Barralach cottages.
Hope to go back!

A great family holiday

  • 5 of 5
My family and I spent a week at Barralach in September 2012, and what an awesome stay we had! The cottages have a spectacular location, far up the country roads in true mountainous beauty. Coming from Cape Town we are quite accustomed to beautiful surroundings, but the views from Barralach simply blew us away with more stunning scenery at every turn. Conveniently though, the cottages are only a few short minutes from the shops, pubs and beaches of Glenbeigh and Rossbeigh, and close to all the tourist attractions that the ring of kerry has to offer. We particularly liked the Kerry Bog Village Museum, and Burkes at Rossbeigh which had great horseback rides (kids included too), mini golf, and a big maze to get lost in.

The cottages are clean, comfortable and well equipped throughout (good kitchen equipment, warm and comfy bedding and wellies for our mountain walks). Peter, our host, was both friendly and helpful and we loved coming home at the end of the day to a delicious dinner prepared by Betty. There is plenty of information on the area provided, which helped us find our way round and learn about the history of Kerry. And when the weather didn't play along with our plans we played board games by the warm fire - Jenga being our family favorite. On waking in the morning we were delighted to find sheep and hares roaming around the lawn, and we developed a morning ritual of having a picnic breakfast on the rock table at the end of the garden - what a fabulous way to start the day!

My children really wanted to sleep in their own separate cottage, and initially i wasn't so sure, but I was relieved to find a baby monitor there that we used to keep a listening ear on them and so it worked out well. They loved exploring the mountain and having their adventures among the trees just behind the house.

I can really recommend Barralach for a wholesome healthy family holiday - We are certainly keen to return!

It overlooks the salmon and trout lakes and rivers of the Caragh system. The great Atlantic surfing strand of Rossbeigh and the quieter beaches of Dooks are close by. The fine restaurants and pubs of Killorglin and Glenbeigh, on the Ring of Kerry, are easily reached. Our brochure will guide you to the best eateries, and to superb and memorable activities such as horse riding on Rossbeigh strand or in Killarney National Park, visits to the Skellig and Blasket Islands, outings with the Dingle dolphin or magnificent walks on the Kerry Way.

Other Activities: mountain biking, photography; landscape painting; bog vegetation lichens & natural springs; hundreds of acres for young and old.

Geology, showing dramatic effects of the Ice Ages in the shaping of the landscape all around us and the deposit of erratic boulders.
