LIVE INSIDE A BEAUTIFUL MEDIEVAL VILLAGE WITH POOL, PRIVACY, PANORAMIC VIEWS!

Piegaro Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

WE OFFER SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN MISSING IN ITALY: a luxurious vacation home with terraces and pool INSIDE the encircling walls of a Historic village WITH PANORAMIC VIEWS! FREE WiFi!! Not your average farmhouse miles from town, or a small village apartment with a tiny balcony. Just steps to savor a morning cappucino or afternoon gelato, and two 4 star restaurants. We have a huge 970 square meters beautifully restored 13th century glass works built in the 9th century medieval walls of Piegaro, Umbria. In the middle of everything you want to see: on the border of Tuscany, near Cortona, Lago Trasimeno, Panicale and Perugia.

Beautiful travertine pool and terraces overlooking the countryside filled with vineyards, olive groves and farms. Yet just steps away to central village piazza with all shopping and village amenities!

We have lovingly and beautifully restored this huge ancient glass works, L'Antica Vetreria, into a large vacation property on three levels of the ancient walls with complete privacy for each unit. It is very rare to find such a property within a medieval village with terraces and a pool and private road from the village piazza.

LA CANTINA is a beautiful 2 story two bedroom apartment perfect for families with young children or honeymooning couples. One king bedroom with panoramic views, the other bedroom has two twins. Sofa bed in living room can sleeps. Bedrooms and bath on second floor. All rooms have panoramic views! Private stone terrace and balcony overlooking the pool with panoramic views and beautiful sunset dining.

First floor has:

Full gourmet kitchen completely outfitted, living and dining area have full windows and glass doors opening to panoramic valley view. A private stone terrace with table and chairs for al fresco dining and lounge chairs. Short stairway to lower terrace with travertine pool. Carefully preserved original stone walls, terra cotta floors and wood beam ceilings with luxury linens in red and white florals. Some plaster walls have ancient 'velatura' rose wash. This is our most bright and sunny apartment! Entrance from our private village street and steps away from all village amenities.

Second floor has:

One king bedroom with two panoramic view windows, hand crafted white armadio; second bedroom is two twins with panoramic window view. One bath with large walk-in shower and view window.

A rare gem, our luxury vacation property had its beginnings in the 9th century. It was once the first glass works built into the 9th century walls by master artisans who came to Umbria from Venice around 1292. We have faithfully restored all its unique features including the ancient glass ovens, tower spiral stairway, and many arches, stone niches and ancient kitchen fireplaces.

Available year round with central heating, the villa and each of the apartments have their own unique historic features. SEE OWNER'S WEBSITE for more photos and details.

ASK TO SEE CANTINA ANNEX: BORGO ANTICO ON OTHER SIDE OF MEDIEVAL WALL WITH BALCONY & MORNING SUN!

Living, Dining, Kitchen with fireplace; king bedroom, bath with double shower and decorator tiles, one twin bedroom. Lovely views from balcony!

Our romantic and historic village is in the middle of everything! On the border of Tuscany and a few km from the Auto Strada, you can easily take day trips to see most of the hill towns of Tuscany and all of Umbria. You can be in Cortona of 'Under the Tuscan Sun' fame in just a few minutes. Florence is an hour away and Rome in under two hours. Dine on fresh fish from Lago Trasimeno. See all the sights and return home to a glass of fabulous Umbrian wine and take a night swim in the fully lit pool!

Exclusive wine tour and tasting in the only 'carbon neutral' vineyard in the world! Special discounts on fabulous wines for our guests.

Living within a medieval village is experiencing Italian life at its best; what we call 'la dolce vita'. Just steps from our villa and apartments, one can savor a morning cappuccino or have an afternoon gelato while lazing in the sun in the piazza or around our swimming pool with panoramic view. There is no need to drive for miles to a restaurant or shops, for all you need is within its walls. Stroll the medieval cobblestone streets to the news agent, the gelateria, two cafes for snacks and espresso or cappuccino, florist, bakery, butcher, wine shop or the two grocers to plan your evening meal. Book an Umbrian chef to cook a feast or give you a cooking lesson. Or dine at a gourmet restaurant in the small piazza beside our villa with special menu and pricing for our guests.

At every turn and twist in the little stone streets one glimpses ancient doorways, a palazzo, a well and stairways leading to 13th century apartments with the daily washing swaying in the breeze. Savor the quiet of a nature walk in the serene Parco Rocolo just under L'Antica Vetreria and discover a mountain of blue and green glass shards from 750 years of glass making.

The history of our surrounding countryside is romantic and enchanting. St. Francis once strolled through our village on his way to found one of his first convents in nearby Cibottola where he lived for awhile. Walk the ancient pathway of San Benedetto on the way to Citta della Pieve where some of Perugino's greatest art works are displayed. Hannibal defeated the Romans near our Lago Transimeno.

Guestbook comments from the owner
"When we planned our trip to Italy, the stay in Piegaro at L'Antica Vetreria was meant to be just a quiet, lovely time. We were in no way prepared for the love affair that ensued immediately upon arrival. We were so taken by the village, our apartment, the people, and the breath-taking views that we began to make plans to return on our very first day. Having also visited the touristy places and big cities, it is the spirit of Piegaro and the charm of L'Antica Vetreria that has remained at the epitome of our Italian vacation and will be the top priority for our next visit. We are booking the Villa in 2011 and bringing the whole family!"

Colleen Simpson and Tom Webb, owners, found this historic glass works in 2004 and completely restored it to its former glory, but with modern amenities, for our guests. We live in Piegaro fulltime now and are always on hand to give our guests excellent service, offer advice on shopping, itineraries or share our passion for Umbria! We offer many specials such as catering meals, cooking lessons, auto rentals, scooter and bike rentals, escorted tours, complete Itinerary booklets to all the historic sights in Umbria and Tuscany, suggested shopping, horse back riding, and much more!

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2004

We spent our honeymoon nearby in Montefalco and fell in love with Umbria, returning for 10 years until we found this perfect historic abandoned glass works in a beautiful medieval village with history. We love being tucked right inside a walled village with all amenities: restaurants, coffee bars, grocery stores, bakery, butcher, pharmacy and more! But complete seclusion and privacy for our guests with pool, terraces and stunning views oriented to the iconic countryside.

We have the only property that we know of right inside a village and just steps to all amenities, but room for pool with terraces and views to countryside and complete privacy. The only way to experience authentic Italian life is in a village savoring its daily rhythms with welcoming neighbors!

Relaxing Week in the Country

  • 5 of 5
Our family of four had a wonderful stay at La Cantina apartment. Tom and Colleen were so welcoming and helpful, it was like visiting family really. The village is quaint, filled with friendly people and the views from the property are truly amazing! Our sons, ages 9 & 12 loved swimming in the pool every day and their daily excursions to get a soda at the pub around the corner. We enjoyed the wine tour at a local vineyard and the lunch afterwards was exquisite! We feel truly blessed to have had such a wonderful experience in Piegaro and after traveling around the world for the previous six months, this is one of the weeks that our sons tell us was the best!

One of a kind!

  • 5 of 5
I along with my mother, daughter and sister, had the pleasure of staying in La Terrazza from Sept 9-12. We were traveling thru Italy and had decided on Umbria at the last minute...literally the day before! We were so glad we did! Colleen and Tom couldn't have been any more accommodating to us and they are absolutely wonderful hosts! They took us to the most wonderful "Green" winery, answered all of our questions and emails, (there was a lot!) and were so very knowledgeable about the area and Umbria in general. La Terrazza is something out of a storybook. It's 8th century stone walls, original glass ovens and beautiful terrace and views ware just spectacular! They managed to restore this old glass factory with all its charm but also make it comfortable for everyone. The beds were great, the kitchen was very modern and functional and we never once ran out of hot water! L'antica Vetreria is like an Umbrian dream come true...it's beauty and history will captivate you! But what makes this place over the top...is Colleen and Tom! They couldn't have been any kinder to us and I look forward to returning to L'Antica Vetreria as soon as possible!

Owner's Response: We were just delighted to get to know you all! What a wonderful last minute surprise to have you with us. We enjoyed every minute, from the winery tour to evenings watching the sunsets from the panoramic terrace of La Terrazza to mingling on the terrace of Juni's seafood restaurant in the piazza of our beautiful little village. It was a great experience for us and guests like you make us savor our calling to provide hospitality and go the extra mile. We can hardly wait to have you return and stay even longer!! Best, Colleen and Tom

The perfect balance!

  • 5 of 5
Stayed here for 1 week in August and had a wonderful time. We were in La Terraza which is perfect for a family of 4 with teenagers, lots of space and separate bathrooms at opposite ends of the unit. Everything has been updated in the unit but you still feel like you are staying in a historic building with the 3' thick walls! This unit was incredibly cool despite the 38 deg C temperatures outside and the terrace was very comfortable as well during the hot temperatures. After visits to the hill top towns in the area, we couldn't wait to get back to the pool and relax until the sun sets and then it was off to dinner in the village which was very welcoming and affordable. Tom and Colleen were wonderful hosts, very efficient with communication, and always available.
Look forward to returning next year!

Breathtaking views of Umbria

  • 5 of 5
When I found this apartment on VRBO, I knew it was where we had to stay. The photos on the website don't begin to capture the actual beauty of this villa, the town or the countryside, so you will not be disappointed when you arrive. The villas are all gorgeous and the history is incredible. The hosts, Tom and Colleen, told the wonderful story of the buildings origins and have done a wonderful thing restoring this building into something beautiful again. There are many, many day trip options to fill your days and every day can end with beautiful views of the sunset from the many terraces at the villa. La Cantina has windows in every room to let in the breeze and sunshine.
We cooked and grilled almost every night but there are dining options if you choose to dine out. The village was friendly and helpful especially listening to me struggle with very little Italian vocabulary.
You can't go wrong with this villa. The highlight of our Italian vacation.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5
We have traveled a lot and La Cantina in Piegaro was the best place we have ever stayed. The views were breathtaking, the apartment beautiful and very comfortable, clean and well stocked.

Piegaro is a charming, historic village with very friendly people. Juni's restaurant was so good, and she was such fun, that we ate there 3 times.

Colleen and Tom are warm, interesting, helpful and fun. They took us on a tour of all the apartments and the villa before we left. Their renovations are a work of art and the villa is outstanding.

Tom and Colleen were living on sight so besides their wonderful company, they were always available for help and advice.

From Piegaro, we took day trips to Sienna, Assisi and Cortona. You need to have a car but the driving was not difficult, especially since we had a GPS for Italy. The car rental agency, which was quite reasonable, picked us up at the train and dropped us off there on our last day for no extra charge.

We would go back to Peigaro and La Cantina in a minute. Our only regret is that we didn't book 2 weeks instead of one.

A Very Special Place

  • 5 of 5
We hesitated to write a review because we enjoyed it so much. We arrived at La Cantina w/our two kids (7 and 10) after several days exploring the sites of Rome. Colleen picked us up at the train station, arranged for a rental car, helped us grocery shop and then drove us up the hill to beautiful Piegaro. As soon as we arrived we were breath taken by the beautiful views of the Umbrian hills surrounding us. Every room in La Cantina has a window with a picture perfect view of Umbria. Our first evening was spent drinking wine and eating local delicacies while watching the sunset on our patio o/s the apt. Our kids spent the evening searching for lizards and swimming in the pool. Piegaro is a sleepy, intimate village located centrally to all we wanted to see. Our kids played soccer in the town piazza in the morning while listening to the church bells ring. Everyone in town is warm and helpful. It is a lovely place to come home to at the end of the day. The apt. has all the comforts of home, with the style and beauty of Italy. We can't say enough about Colleen and Tom. We felt like we were visiting family. They are a wealth of information, energy and warmth.

The kitchen at La Cantina is well stocked with everything you need. There is a central washer/dryer and a great video library for our kids. Really the place is so special that it was hard to leave at the end of the week. With-in 1-2 hours you can reach all the major attractions (and more) of both Umbria and parts of Tuscany. It's rare that the actual experience exceeds expectations, but in this case it really did. Colleen and Tom did an amazing job renovating the old glass factory. We saw all the units and hope to come back with family and friends in the near future and stay in the incredible 5bd Villa!

Thank you so much Colleen and Tom!
