Wanted to like it, but too many drawbacks

  • 2 of 5
Positives: The apartment was just as pictured--very clean and attractive. The kitchen was well-equipped and in perfect working order. There were a number of other amenities not always found in rentals—mirrors in convenient places; plenty of outlets for charging; good reading lights; closet space. It appears that the owner stays in the apartment sometimes so has it set up to be comfortable.
Drawbacks: The location is halfway up a hill on a pedestrian only street. This means you must cart any luggage either up or down. If you are traveling light this might not be a problem.
The greeter was pleasant and was present when we arrived, but did not speak much English and did not explain how any of the appliances worked. There were no instructions in English. Also, there was no WiFi, phone, or TV. The owner admitted that he had known about this a week earlier, but we were not told until we asked the greeter. We contacted the owner several times and he responded but the WiFi never worked.
I think this apartment would work well for someone who is fluent in French (perhaps a visitor from another part of France). But the lack of onsite support was a major drawback for us. We had no local contact and any number of things could have gone wrong. The lack of WiFi was much more than a mere inconvenience since we were dependent on online sources for information. The posting said the owner spoke English, and he does, but he was in New York during our visit. Therefore his efforts, however well-intentioned, were not successful.
We were not charged a greeter fee, presumably because we did not receive any onsite support. Our deposit was refunded two weeks after we departed---a longer than usual time for rentals like this.

We would not choose this apartment again.

Great place to stay!!

  • 5 of 5
I absolutely loved the apartment! I was visiting Paris while on a break from school. I traveled alone and am a young woman and I felt entirely safe in the apartment. The pictures are true to what the apartment looks like. The pedestrian street was well lit and fairly quiet but the nearest metro station, Chateau Rouge (well, that's the one I used) was probably somewhere someone on their own might not want to be alone at night but during the day I never felt uncomfortable. The apartment is within walking distance to many bakeries, grocery stores and restaurants that were great! Checking in and out was very simple. And any problems I had (really the only one was fixing the wifi) were quickly and easily sorted out thanks to the owners! The cab fare from the apartment to Gare de Lyon (I had a very early train) was about 20 euro. I'm not sure if that's the standard but just in case anyone wants to factor in travel to or from the apartment by cab. My stay was great! It made for a wonderful week in Paris!

Lovely Montmartre

  • 4 of 5
What a lovely space! This apartment is perfect for the traveller who wants an authentic Parisian experience.

We arrive in Paris quite tired, so it was great that the apartment was easily accessible by public transportation. While small, the apartment is cozy and contains all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay. The surrounding area is vibrant but not touristy at all, which we loved. Although we wanted to see the sights as much as the next couple, we wanted a place to rest our heads that was removed from the constant bustle of Paris tourism. However, that is not to say that Montmartre does not offer its own wonderful sights and activities -- the cathedral literally up the street is breathtaking.

Access to the metro, markets (of both the local and super variety), wine, pharmacies, and local cafes, bistros, and restaurants was excellent. The owner was professional and communicative; the transfer of keys and payment was all seamless. As people who has stayed in all sorts of residences all over the world, we were pleased with the trouble-free nature of the entire transaction. This place is the real deal.

Thanks again, and hope to do business again soon!

Honeymoon

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I stayed in this Montmartre studio for two weeks on our honeymoon. The photos and listing are all very accurate. The studio is about the size of an average hotel room, but extremely functional. It was perfect for two, could certainly handle three, but four guests would be too many. For the two of us, it quickly felt like home.

The building is indeed on a pedestrian street, which itself is fairly steep. As other reviewers have noted, this isn't really a problem so long as you get around pretty well. The locked building did feel quite safe, and both street and building were very quiet.

We used the pull-out bed and found it comfortable. We didn't utilize the other sofa at all really, but it seemed like it could comfortably sleep one.

The little kitchen was fantastic. Very nice appliances and cookware, which we appreciated during our two week stay. It allowed us to get some groceries and not have to go out for every meal. The other great bonus is the washer/dryer unit - we packed for a week and were able to do some laundry. The only problem is that the instruction manual is in French and German. Some quick Googling and we were able to find English instructions, but I would recommend that the owner leave some basic instructions in other languages in the future.

We found the wifi to work perfectly, once we figured out the password. Since it was our first time in Paris, we were fairly dependent on our mobile devices for basic information.

As others have said, you will be using the Metro to get to most of the main tourist attractions, but these trips are not complicated. We actually preferred the 5 minute walk to Chateau Rouge (line 4), which itself will take you right to areas like the Louvre and Ile-de-Cite. A 10 minute walk gets you to Lamarck-Coulincourt (Line 12), and finally you can opt to go down the hill to Abesses (Line 2, I think?) Expect about 20-25 minutes on the Metro to the big tourist attractions in the 1st eme.

As for booking, Richard was very responsive to our (frequent) email queries. We were able to get the keys a couple of weeks before we left, but I don't know if this is regular policy. As of writing this review, we haven't gotten the security deposit back, but Richard has informed us that it will be sent 3 weeks after we vacated.

Paris Gem in Montmartre!

  • 5 of 5
This is the 2nd time I have stayed at this wonderful studio apartment. The pictures are very accurate but you’re even happier with your decision to stay here once you open the door. Being an airline pilot and spending so much time in so many different hotels, I find this studio apartment perfect! It is comfortable, very clean and decorated superbly. For sleeping the day bed and pull out sofa bed are comfortable and do the job. I slept great and really enjoyed the ambiance here. It is in a quiet cobble-stoned neighborhood close to 3 metro stops. I preferred the walk from the Lamarck Caulaincourt station but Abbesses works great too by taking the Funicular or stairs up to the Sac le Coeur. The handy kitchenette made our stay much more comfortable, since we could make coffee and breakfast in the morning without feeling rushed to venture out early every day in search of food. Being able to do your laundry is so nice as well. The owners have always been very accommodating and have made my experience to this little gem in Paris wonderful. Can’t wait to come back again and again!
