Tennis Players and Outlet Shoppers:
Destin is home to a number of beautiful clubs that welcome walk-ins. Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort has clay and grass courts and clinic sign ups; Tops'l is home to the annual Helen Drake Tournament in April; Bluewater Bay has twelve clay courts and provides hitting services for junior and adult tournament players. In Fort Walton Beach, Pro Erik Stenberg's facility has twelve hard courts and has tournaments throughout the year. Kids travel to hit and receive coaching from Erik.
Silver Sands Outlet mall is a short twenty minute drive to shop at over 100 stores including Nine West, Lenox, Calvin Klein, Nautica, Nike, Perry Ellis, Ralph Lauren, Rockport, Saks Fifth Avenue, Fossil, Greg Norman, Hartmann, Under Armour, Izod, Jockey, Waterford Wedgewood, Cole-Haan, Coach and Gap.
YMCA - Weight room and Armament Museum:
There is a new YMCA facility with pool located next to Home Depot off Highway 98. There is also a Golds Gym within ten minutes on Highway 98 and a new work out club next to Marshalls and Fresh Market.
Near Eglin Air Force Base is a free museum of weapons, bombs, WW II, Korean, Vietnam and Desert Storm aircraft. It is worth the trip to Fort Walton Beach.
Fishing Charters:
Destin is home to superior deep sea gulf fishing. There are plenty of charters available. Even if you don't fish, you can walk along the Boardwalk around 4:00 to see the charters catch.
After strolling the boardwalk, go to McGuires, Lucky Snapper or Fudpuckers to listen to local favorite musical artist Chuck Lawson play island music.
Ski:
Sorry, helicopter snow skiing has been prohibited on the beach. But, there are helicopter rides at Destin airport.
The beach recently underwent a $27 million refurbishment replacing up to an additional 75 to 100 feet of beach that was lost to previous storms. The sand was dredged from the Destin pass, transported, then piped and bull dozed onto the beach. Appalachian quartz is the sand that provides the consistent white hue to reflect the emerald blue water.
Golf:
There are nine golf courses within thirty minutes including Indian Bayou, Regatta Bay, Burnt Pine, Kelly Plantation, San Destin Golf, Emerald Bay and Bluewater Bay. Many have weekly rates available.
