The Alexander Valley Lodge is located in the wine region of Alexander Valley bordering Dry Creek Valley and just 10 minutes from Russian River. We are only minutes from over 150 wineries. We are about 5-10 minutes from downtown Healdsburg which is a quaint town with great shops, antiques, restaurants and wine shops. The beauty of Healdsburg is unsurpassed – centered in the Northern California wine country, visitors often compare the area to Tuscany. From the Healdsburg Plaza take a walking tour of our historic homes, get a soothing massage at one of our spas, or linger in our museums and wine library. The Russian River runs through Healdsburg, and visitors enjoy beaches, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, all the way to the Pacific Coast. Ride or drive the Coast to enjoy sightseeing, walking on beaches, whale watching, bird watching, or rock climbing! Travel along the back roads for picnics under redwood trees in one of our many parks. Road cycling is enjoyed year-round.

Great House, Terrible Customer Service

malindakai San Francisco, CA
Review Submitted: December 3, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2009
I stayed at the Lodge for my 30th birthday with a group of my closest friends and family. My parents came up to cook for us and we all ended up enjoying ourselves, despite lots of frustrations about the lodge and the owner. The bottom line is that the owner is not a good communicator, so you have to be explicit and get things in writing. Once you do that, have her confirm two or three times and you should be good.

In planning the trip, she offered us the wine tour ($45/person for 5 hours including lunch). She said this would include the tasting fees so we wouldn't have to pay them ourselves. She told me to research wineries and select a few I would like to visit. After extensive research of wineries, she said we would have to pay all the fees because the wineries were in Napa and they only had deals with Alexander Valley wineries. To top it off, there were only about 10 wineries we could choose from. When she finally gave me that list, I went to town researching and made my selection. In the end, one of the wineries ended up charging us anyway. Frustrating.

We had two families with babies coming and I let the owner know this in advance, saying we were happy there was a crib in one of the rooms. She offered to put a pack-n-play in another room to accommodate the second baby. When we got to the house, there was no crib and only a broken pack-n-play. The houseman had to call the owner who ended up finding one at her son's preschool to bring to us. The problem was solved, but it shouldn't have been such a headache.

We put the two families with babies in the two rooms farthest from any noise. It turned out those were the rooms with completely unusable tubs/showers. This was beyond simple rural plumbing where you have to let the water run for 5 minutes. Even the houseman acknowledged that the tubs were unusable due to sludge and apologized, saying they had had a plumber out just that morning. The owner denied knowing anything about the bad water ahead of time when I told her a heads up would have been nice.

The house was beautiful, though, and we all enjoyed ourselves. I just wish I hadn't had to go through so much stress (which unfortunately seeped out to some of my guests as well) on my birthday weekend. It is possible to have a great time at Alexander Valley Lodge, just don't go in with really high expectations.

Vacation for the books!

Hawaiians Waipahu, Hawai'i, USA
Review Submitted: October 12, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Without knowing where to begin, I would first just like to say one word - INCREDIBLE! This trip to "Wine Country" was a first for many in our party so picking the right place to stay was vital. AVL turned out to be a dream home. We were all very pleased with not only the accommodations but the unbelievable hospitality from the owner. In Hawai'i, we pride ourselves on our aloha spirit, the owner and her 'ohana (family) definitely exemplify the aloha spirit. The house lived up to our every expectation and then some. It was near enough to so many vineyards/wineries in the immediate area that it was almost unnecessary to go any further than Healdsburg. It was cozy, yet allowed great privacy to all in our party. It was rural enough where you could enjoy nature, yet close enough to everything where you weren't at a complete loss of things to do. The sound system throughout the house was awesome, the jacuzzi and pool were quite relaxing to hang out by. Coming from Hawai'i, the fire place came in quite handy during those cold October nights (50's, I know, wimps right). The views were breathtaking and made for some very good conversation over morning coffee. And lastly, the one item that made our trip (and our stay at the house) absolutely complete, was having Chef Martin come and cook for us. We made up the table (complete with name plaques and the menu), got some beautiful flowers, dressed up, played some very good dinner music, cracked open a few bottles of great wine, and had Chef completely spoil us. His cooking was amazing. We had, among other things, the crab cakes (fantastic), the mushroom soup (unbelievable, don't ask him for the recipe, it's top secret), and the pepper crusted filet (OMG). Thank you for putting us in touch with him, and mahalo nui Chef Martin for sharing your talent with us. The only complaint we had about Chef Martin, was that we didn't think to ask him to cook for us the whole week. All in all, it was indeed, INCREDIBLE! We highly recommend the AVL to anyone who might want a get away in wine country. He u'i nui keia hale. Mahalo piha a me malama nui 'ohana Alexander!
