Situated right at the top of Estalane, a friendly and picturesque village, Le Haut du Village is a 19th century farmhouse, full of character, comfortable and well equipped. A gated, peaceful and sunny courtyard provides good security for young children and offers a lovely spot for outdoors eating. From the swimming pool there are magnificent views looking out over the Gorges du Tarn and surrounding Causses (upland areas). A wide range of outdoor activities are available within comfortable reach. These include sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, rafting, bungee jumping, mountain biking, paragliding and horse riding. Being set in open, semi mountainous countryside, the area offers fantastic walking. The rich and historic local culture is well worth getting to know - full details in the house on arrival. There is a very good English speaking Tourist Information Centre in Millau, a pretty but sizable town, 13 miles away.

Estalane, the small village in which Le Haut du Village is located, lies on the south facing slopes of the Levezou Plateau looking over the Tarn. The area feels wonderfully open. From many spots above and around the village the views unfold for tens of miles. The new Norman Foster designed bridge (largest road bridge in the world with two columns higher than the Eiffel Tower) which spans the Tarn to the south-east can be seen in the distance. There are two easily accessible airports, Rodez and Montpelier. The A75 comes within about 8 miles of the house at the St Germain exit.

Notes: Pool The pool (10m x 5m) was built in early summer 2004. It is shared with a family that we have known for years who live in the village and with whom we are on very friendly terms. Sleeping accommodation The quality of bedding in the downstairs master bedroom is very high - good support with supple finish. The sofa bed in the sitting room is suitable for one or two children and OK for young adults but is not of high quality. The upstairs double is of good quality but firm. The singles are very soft but are comfortable. Linen can be provided as an optional extra. The staircase is unsuitable for elderly people.

Attractive ancient Village setting

We (6 adults) enjoyed a very comfortable stay with the main feature of this house being the newly fitted spacious kitchen. The ancient village setting was also an attraction and the taste of the fresh spring water was fantastic. Tourist info & books ample - especially the maps & walking. For some the cottage arrangement may not suit (steps into & out of various rooms) but we are used to cottage conversions in the UK. Good supply of Linen etc. The bathroom & en-suite work well with lots of hot water but probably need a little DIY attention as does the top fixing of the banister on the stairs.
