Piegaro Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Private terrace; Huge Views! Spacious living, dining, kitchen.2 King Bedroom

WE OFFER SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN MISSING IN ITALY: a luxurious vacation home with terraces and pool INSIDE the encircling walls of an historic village WITH PANORAMIC VIEWS! FREE WiFi! All shopping in the village just steps away! Not your average farmhouse miles from town, or a small village apartment with a tiny balcony. Just steps to savor morning cappucino or a gelato, or amble to two 4 star restaurants! We have a huge 970 sq mtr beautifully restored 13th century glassworks built in the medieval walls of Piegaro, Umbria. In the middle of everything you want to see: on the border of Tuscany, near Cortona, Lago Trasimeno, Panicale and Perugia.

Beautiful travertine pool and private terrace overlooking the countryside filled with vineyards, olive groves and farms. Beautiful sunsets! Total privacy and yet just steps away from the central piazza with all village amenities!

A historic and charming apartment with private stone terrace near the pool with panoramic views of green valley. Spacious living room, dining and kitchen with views, two spacious king bedrooms and baths. Enjoy sunsets over the hills, watch the lights wink on in the farmhouses, swim at night in our beautifully lit pool!

Forno is a very spacious apartment with large floor to ceiling panoramic view windows from spacious living, dining room and kitchen. Kitchen and dining rooms have three large arched doorways to private poolside terrace. Sun loungers and table with chairs for outdoor dining. We have preserved the original glass oven that glass masters who came down from Venice used to blow the glass mosiacs in Orvieto Duomo facade. Spacious living room has comfortable couch with chairs, credenza and bookcases and large view window. WiFi! Two large king bedrooms with one large bath and walk-in shower. King bedrooms can be made into twins; rollaway and cribs, highchairs available. Sleeps 5 in beds.

Terrazza has huge grass and stone terrace with panoramic views. Spacious king bedrooms with baths, big living room, kitchen and dining room. A cool oasis in summer with thick walls, historic base of 9th century tower and perfectly preserved barrel vault ceilings and arrow slit windows.

Fully equipped kitchen with American and European coffee makers, all cooking and dining utensils.

Weekly rentals available year round with central heating.

A rare gem, our luxury vacation property had its beginnings in the 9th century. It was once the first glass works built into the 9th century walls by master artisans who came to Umbria from Venice around 1292. We lovingly and beautifully restored this huge ancient glassworks, L'Antica Vetreria, into a large villa and four apartments on four levels of the ancient walls. It is very rare to find such a property within a medieval village with terraces and a pool and private road from the village piazza.

Piegaro is an enchanting medieval village perched on a hill with panoramic views over the green heart of Italy toward Lago Trasimeno. Within its encircling walls is its magical history of over 750 years of glass making! Master glass artisans from Venice, attracted by the abundance of wood and water vital for glassmaking, made of this hamlet a renowned center for production of glass throughout northern Italy. Famous since 1250, the Piegaresi provided the glass mosaic facades for the Cathedrals of Orvieto, Bologna and Milano. They continue the tradition in the modern glass factory in the valley below the town.

Living within a medieval village is experiencing Italian life at its best; what we call 'la dolce vita'. Just steps from our villa and apartments, one can savor a morning cappuccino or have an afternoon gelato while lazing in the sun in the piazza or around our swimming pool with panoramic view. There is no need to drive for miles to a restaurant or shops, for all you need is within its walls. Stroll the medieval cobblestone streets to bakery, butcher, wine shop or the two grocers to plan your evening meal. Book an Umbrian chef to give you a cooking lesson. Or dine at one of two gourmet restaurants with outdoor terraces in the small piazza beside our villa.

Exlusive tour and tasting at the only 'carbon neutral' vineyard in the world; special discounts on fabulous wines for our guests!

At every turn and twist little stone streets one glimpses ancient doorways, a palazzo, a well and stairways leading to 13th century apartments with the daily washing swaying in the breeze. Savor the quiet of a nature walk in the serene Parco Rocolo just under L'Antica Vetreria and discover a mountain of blue and green glass shards from 750 years of glassmaking.

The history of our surrounding countryside is romantic and enchanting. San Francesco once strolled through our village on his way to found one of his first convents in nearby Cibottola where he lived for awhile. Walk the ancient pathway of San Benedetto on the way to Citta della Pieve where some of Perugino's greatest art works are displayed. Hannibal defeated the Romans near our Lago Transimeno.

Our romantic village is in the middle of everything! On the border of Tuscany and a few km from the Auto Strada, you can easily take day trips to see most of the hill towns of Tuscany and all of Umbria. You can be in Cortona of 'Under the Tuscan Sun' fame in just a few minutes. Florence is an hour away and Rome in under two hours. Dine on fresh fish from Lago Trasimeno. See all the sights and return home to a glass of fabulous Umbrian wine and take a swim in the pool!

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2004

Why The Owner chose Piegaro

We spent our honeymoon nearby in Montefalco and fell in love with Umbria, returning for 10 years until we found this perfect huge abandoned glass works right inside a medieval village with much history! All the amenities of village life with all shopping, restaurants, coffee bars, grocery stores, bakery, butcher, pharmacy; but with seclusion and privacy and stunning views, terraces and pool oriented to iconic countryside! Being in a village is the only way to really experience the authenitic Italian life with its daily rhythms and friendly neighbors.

What makes this apartment unique

This is the only property that we know of that is right inside a village with all amenities just steps away, but with pool, privacy and views to countryside!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time last May at L'Antica Vetraria. It is a beautiful property, owned and run by Tom and Colleen from Seattle, and they are excellent and knowledgable hosts. It served as our hub from which we did day trips to the surrounding hill towns in Umbria and Tuscany. Tom and Colleen have managed to preserve the most wonderful historical elements of this ancient glass factory while providing modern facility with all conveniences. We stayed in the "IL Forno Uno" apartment (2 couples) and had more than ample room. The view is spectacular. Would highly recommend L'Antica Vetraria" to anyone who wants to come back after a busy day of sightseeing to a peaceful, beautiful setting with all the conveniences of home.

A Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5
While the photos are great, it is even more breathtaking in person! Views are incredible from all different angles. This is a 9th century refurbished glass factory that has different apartments. We stayed in the lower apartment which was the original location of the ovens for the glass factory It was very clean as well as the outside areas including pool. Grounds are extremely well maintained with the occasional tomato plant growing from a container. The friendliness, helpfulness of the owners, Colleen & Tom, was like being with people you have known forever. Truly good folks! In addition to being great hosts, they are great historians of the area, have helpful suggestions, & are just plain nice. Having Americans to work with was wonderful in & of itself but these two went above & beyond to make our stay comfortable. Several good restaurants, a cafe, market, butcher, gelato are all within walking distance. A"carbon neutraI" vineyard with tours available is a short ride by car. TV with many DVDs is available washer/dryer on premises. I look forward to returning in the future.

A Magical, One-of-a-Kind Place

  • 5 of 5
I don't know if I am a poetic enough writer to do justice writing about this property. Not only is there beauty to the eye in the unique, historical building, in the gorgeous views, and in the sweet village, there is also beauty for the soul in all of these elements. An experience like this is my favorite way to travel: some days my family took day trips to local sites and played tourist; other days we hung around the village, being a part of everyday community life. For the owners of this property, Colleen and Tom, this endeavor is so much more than a business; it is a passion of the heart that is evident in every detail, large and small. They are completely accessible by email, phone, or in person to share their joy and knowledge of the region, the people, and each and every logistical question you can throw their way. I traveled here with my husband and 6-year-old son, and we all found something to enjoy, and we all wished we could stay much, much longer than we were able. I can't imagine not visiting here again.

Il Forno Apartment

  • 5 of 5
I spent 1 week in the Il Forno Apartment in May 2010 and I must say it was absolutely lovely.
The apartment had everyting I could possibly need including a fabulous view of the Umbria country side.
Colleen was a most gracious hostess and was available for questions, recommendations, directions, maps, etc. I would highly recommend this property and will plan to stay with Colleen again on my next trip to Umbria.

wonderful vacation in Umbria, Italy

  • 5 of 5
My daughter and I had a wonderful time staying at Villa L'Antica Vetreria. Our expectations based on their website were exceeded by the reality. Amazing views, high quality furnishings, very comfortable rooms, plenty of space. Colleen Simpson knows all there is to know about the area, and pointed us to several lovely day trips. I already have recommended this location to several friends and family members.

A truly amazing trip. Can't wait to go back!

A very comfortable stay in Umbria at an old glass factory converted to residential use

  • 5 of 5
I stayed at L'Antica Vetreria in early May 2010 in the apartment called "Il Forno Uno". It is very modern and fully equipped, including everything you would need in the kitchen and even a hair-dryer in the bathroom. The bed and the pillows were comfortable; towels were provided; and there is access to a washer/dryer. The owner also provided both wireless and cable access to the Internet. My unit opened directly onto the pool area and had views of the Umbrian countryside. The comune of Piegaro is accessible by car to places such as Perugia, Orvieto, Spello, Assisi, Todi, Gubbio and Lake Trasimeno and the property is accessible by foot to a glass-making museum, a bakery, bar, butcher-shop, restaurant and convenience store. If you are in this area, make sure to eat at Il Faliero in Sant'Arcangelo, which is near Lake Trasimeno.

The owner is very knowledgeable about the area and the town itself, and was very helpful.

I would stay here again and would recommend it without reservation.

Owner's Response: I so much enjoyed hosting K. and spent many lovely days with her. I also loved sharing some of my favorite places to see in our beautiful Umbria. A highlight was going to il Faliero for sunset over Lago Trasimeno, a local hangout with the best fish in Italy; a real local place that most tourists don't find. Sharing my little piece of paradise brings ultimate enjoyment to me. I'm looking forward to K.s next visit!

We stayed in La Terrazza from 29 May-3 June, 2009, and after the craziness of Rome it was an oasis of calm in Umbria. We chose L'Antica Vetreria because of its location and the fact that it was in a village, which was important to us. We found it to be perfect in all respects - Rome, Florence, Siena and Orvieto are all within 2 hours of the villa. The location in the town of Piegaro allowed us to pick up grocery items without having to drive, and to go out to restaurants when we didn't want to cook.
The accomodations are as beautiful as they are true to the historic building, and Colleen and Tom had great vision in ttheir renovation.

As a travel agent I have the opportunity to stay in many beautiful properties in the world, and I count this among them. I hope to come back soon, and bring my friends and family!
